1 Corinthians 14, First Corinthians 14, Speaking in Tongues or Glossolalalia

Kenneth Sublett, Piney.com, Hohenwald, Tennessee

1 Corinthians 14: Speaking in tongues in Corinth, Scripture or Scruples? Paul absolutely forbids stand up - speak out roles for women in the assembly. In fact, Paul forbids men who are not inspired or do not deliver the word "as it has been delivered" from ruling over the collective assembly. The tongues and music in Corinth would have been an effeminate attempt to find the lost gods and therefore women could not attempt to "bring the worshipers into the presence of God." Men who fell into the role of pagan women were also to be silenced.

Dedicating self to the study of the once-for-all sung and sermonized Word of God was reasonable, rational and therefore spiritual:

Till I come, give attendance (prosecho) to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 1Tim 4:13

Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you. 1Tim 4:14 RSV

Be sure to use the abilities God has given you through his prophets when the elders of the church laid their hands upon your head. 1Tim 4:14LIV

Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. 1Tim 4:15

In light of this, any form of ceremonial legalism is an attempt to restore ancient fertility rituals where the gods had to be attacked with song, dance, music and sex (real or suggested).

Was Paul inspired or was Paul a woman hating, male chauvinist? This is a tentative look at a few few verses to see what they literally say in at least six versions. Whatever Paul was, he was consistent.

You need to understand that rejecting Paul and Christ is not based upon Scripture. Rather, it is based upon redefining God in the image of feminism. This was the ancient contest between Yahweh and Asherah: between the male God of Mind and Spirit and the female goddess of charismatic worship, musical praise, fertility rituals and other "right-brained" attempts to find her.

Musical Worship and Leadership Teams not Based Upon Scripture

The following quote may help understand that Scripture must be discarded like an old wineskin before it can begin to ferment in an all-inclusive form:

"According to Kassian, when in the seventies women took it in hand to define the world (i.e., psychology, sociology, marriage and so forth) from their perspective, the movement shifted from Women's Liberation to feminism. She summarizes:

"Women were different from men, but this fact was not a source of shame, but rather a source of pride. Feminism taught that women ought to be proud of their different bodies and their different perceptions. The 'male' interpretations of the past were therefore boldly rejected and replaced with interpretations reflecting a feminist definition of reality. The feminist view was so widely accepted in some circles that

it became the mode and norm for truth.

Women had not only claimed the right to name themselves, but also the right to name and define the world around them.

"During the eighties feminism shifted to defining God. Kassian cites Rosemary Radford Ruether as an example:

"If we are to seek an image of God beyond patriarchy, certain basic principles have to be acknowledged. First, we have to acknowledge the principal that the male has no special priority in imaging God. Christian theology has always recognized, theoretically, that all language for God is analogical and metaphorical, not literal. No particular image can be regarded as the exclusive image for God. Images for God must be drawn from the whole range of human experience, from both genders and all social classes and cultures. To take one image drawn from one gender and in one sociological context (that of the ruling class) as normative for God is to legitimate this gender and social group as the normative possessors of the image of God and representatives of God on earth. This is idolatry.

"Kassian concludes:

"The phenomena of inclusive language recognized and further served to reinforce the paradigm offered by feminist theology. It, more than theological rhetoric, brought the feminist debate to the level of the ordinary believer as women's studies had done. Feminist theology was thereby translated from an academic philosophy to the

level of practical daily worship of the Christian community.

Feminists had named themselves and world, and now, through inclusive language, they and their Christian communities began to name God. Click Here for a rebuttal

God through Isaiah warned that women and children would usurp the headship and the first thing they would do would be to destroy the male rule of love for the revealed Word of God:

As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths. Isa 3:12

Oppress is: Nagas (h5064) naw-gas'; a prim. root; to drive (an animal, a workman, a debtor, an army); by impl. to tax, harass, tyrannize: - distress, driver, exact (-or), oppress (-or), * raiser of taxes, taskmaster.

Her male "priests of Baal and of Asherah" are the front men to lead the church into a new wineskin religion (Isaiah 5) where religious festivals were devoted to mind-bending with wine and music. In chapter 7 Isaiah prophesied that a virgin would give birth to Messiah Who would not be appeased through His eyes and ears but would judge on the basis of truth and righteousness.

It is not surprising, therefore, that this is a feminist god.

The god of singing, dancing, hand clapping, instrumental music

and a rejection of the objective meaning of the Word of God as Spirit addressing our Spiritual, rational or left-brain nature of Godly men and women.

They will cut you through the belly with a rhetorical sword and demand that we are "Post Modern" and therefore we must just lift up Jesus. It always looks like they are lifting up themselves.

You cannot reject Paul without rejecting Christ.

If Paul wanted women to perform stand up or speak out roles leading the worship in song or sermon or any highly visible role then Paul could have said so. If Paul was not inspired then why should we worry about it? If women can assume these roles then why was the Holy Spirit or the Mind of Christ so dogmatic and explicit so that you have to hustle mightily to contradict Him?

You must remember that when the Spirit spoke to Paul it was Lord Jesus Christ. Christ promised to remind Paul of what he had been taught and to appear to him for further instructions. This was identical to the promise to the other apostles:

And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. Ac 26:15

But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; Ac.26:16

Therefore, if Paul cannot be trusted then Lord Jesus Christ or full Deity cannot be trusted. To reject Paul is to blaspheme Christ.

Corinth: on the one hand what should happen

Corinth didn't have the tiny Spiritual gift to resolve the cult of personality or quit boasting that "ole Joe had his father's wife last night. Ha, Ha." By defining true Spiritual gifts Paul could shame Corinth into sitting down and shutting up. Because Paul is not a legalist he does not make laws in our sense. Rather, he shows what irrational, insane-acting, carnal people (you) would do and what He, the inspired Apostle-Prophet would do. By seeing the contrast, any one with sense would understand the Mind of Christ.

Paul is a Pavarotti who visits our church and says: "I see that you are all singing opera. But you don't all have the gift, do you?"

Paul used deadly irony as a boney finger pointed into the face of the "super apostles" who were trained in the Greek theater and saw "godliness as a means of financial gain." He said, "Your assemblies do more harm than good" (11:17):

If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned,

Idiotes (h2399) id-ee-o'-tace; from 2398; a private person, i.e. (by impl.) an ignoramus (comp. "idiot"): - ignorant, rude, unlearned.

Most of the apostles were not "educated" in the Law of moses. They were not ignorant of the ways of fishing. However, they had no reason to know all of the languages needed to carry and validate the Author of the Gospel.

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. Ac.4:13

This speaking of tongues could be understood by those trained in the languages. The further description of the Apostles is that they were:

Agrammatos (g62) ag-ram-mat-os; from 1 (as neg. particle) and 1121; unlettered, i.e. illiterate: - unlearned.

Gramma (g1121) ag-ram-mat-os; from 1 (as neg. particle) and 1121; unlettered, i.e. illiterate: - unlearned.

Else, when thou shalt bless with the spirit,

how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks,

seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? 1Co.14:16

For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. 1 Cor 14:17

or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? (insane) 1Cor 14:23

But if all prophesy (teach from inspiration or the Word), and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced (confronted) of all, he is judged of all: 1Cor 14:24

And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth. 1Cor 14:25

Note: The all is restricted to all those competent. Even this was limited to two or three. An octet violates this because they are not inspired and because they all preach at the same time. Subversion, and not instruction, is the goal.

A candidate fit for conversion from hearing the Word will not perform the judgmental sign and speak in tongues, will not sing and dance, will not jump and run. They will fall down in the presence of Christ's holy words and will not--cannot--exhalt themselves in the ancient halal form of praise! Their worship is:

Proskuneo (g4352) pros-koo-neh'-o; from 4314 and a prob. der. of 2965 (mean. to kiss, like a dog licking his master's hand); to fawn or crouch to, i.e. (lit. or fig.) prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore): - worship.

You can bet on it: when we see loud and exciting as spiritual we are still unbelievers.

Corinth: What really happened to "do more harm than good"

The church or called out assembly of believers and gathered unbelievers was for their own edification. God did not need to be instructed. However, Paul showed that they were still mixed up in pagan worship. From chapter ten (worship of demons), chapter eleven (uncovered prophesying), Chapter twelve (pretending to have gifts), chapter 13 (gongs and clang = pagan worship) and chapter 14, speaking to the god (generic) and speaking into the air and looking insane Corinth was engaged in the worship of pagan gods and not Jesus Christ:

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue (strange speech not a language) speaketh not unto men, but unto God (theos): for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit (his mind) he speaketh mysteries. 1 Corinthians 14:2

This means that "men" were not edified and their assemblies did more harm than good (11:17)

The word "God" is indefinite. Therefore, it could be a pagan god which Paul indicates they were still worshiping.

Speaking out of their own spirits or minds confirms this because they had no supernatural gift.

The word "mysteries" also confirms that this is what was happening.

They were just speaking into the air (v 9) which might be Juno the goddess of the air. They were trying to ascend or to resurrect the dead body to bring Christ into their presence.

The literature of the period clearly show what it means to worship "the principalities and powers of the air" or the gods and goddesses of the air. Click for Details.

Contrary to pagan, ceremonial legalism marked by attempts to excite the human body, spiritual worship occurs when we die to self and free our minds to perform reasonable, rational meaning "spiritual" worship:

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice (burn it up), holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable (spiritualf or logical to the mind) service. Ro 12:1

And be not conformed to this world: but ye transformed by the renewing of your mind (spirit), that ye may prove (test) what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. Rom 12:2

To worship "in spirit and truth" it is important not to excite the flesh which clearly is a result of inducing endorphins or morphine-like drugs which causes us to "feel" that which is not real or spiritual. On the other end, worship involves a quiet, reverent sense of the presence of God.

This is why Paul demanded of the near-pagan Corinthians:

But he that prophesieth (teach) speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. 1 Corinthians 14:3

However, the Corinthians brought charismatic practices into the assembly. In effect, Paul said: "This is what I say but now what about what you are doing?"

How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. 1Cor 14:26

Not: "let everything be done" but "done unto edifying or education."

"But not all of you have the gift, do you?" Edification is not self-building but body building-

Oikodome (g3619) oy-kod-om-ay'; fem. (abstr.) of a comp. of 3624 and the base of 1430; architecture, i.e. (concr.) a structure; fig. confirmation: - building, edifyication

Webster: "instruction especially moral or spiritual instruction, enlightenment or improvement."

Music may make you feel good but a "drug injection through sound" is not capable of instructing one with spiritual truth. An exhilarating worship experience is, by definition, not edification.

Paul did not say "let all things be done" but "let all things be done unto edification." If it does not edify then don't do it. Edification comes from teaching. Edification is not "feeling good." We may feel good about congregational singing but edification comes from the words.

Speaking or singing in tongues does not edify. Therefore, speaking in tongues was not permitted in the assembly unless they had someone superior to Paul because in church Paul insulted the notion of tongues with his 1 to 2000 word comparison. Paul spoke in tongues when he travelled into areas where he was evangelizing or teaching the gospel in the language of the people. He even said that he wished everyone had this gift but you don't evangelize "in church." Therefore, he continued:

Yet in the church (popular assembly -- not inclusive family) I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach (Katecheo or indoctrinate to edify) others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue. 1Co.14:19

Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men. 1 Corinthians 14:20

Laleo (g2989) lal-eh'-o; a prol. form of an otherwise obsol. verb; to talk, i.e. utter words: - preach, say, speak (after), talk, tell, utter. Comp. 3004.

By using the same word to the Ephesians and Colossians Paul did not command "singing" which was always a secular activity but speaking or preaching the songs of inspiritation. The singing and melody would thereby be in the heart while the congregaion is taught or edified:

Speaking (Laleo) to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Ephesians 5:19

Singing their own songs out of their own spirit was just "speaking into the air" and was equated by Paul to speaking in tongues or noise-producing instruments of warfare.

To the Colossians this same Paul wrote:

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Col 3:16

The teaching is not singing but:

Didasko (g1321)did-as'-ko; (to learn); to teach (in the same broad application): - teach

If so be that ye have heard him, and

have been taught by him,
as the truth is in Jesus: Epesians 4:21

The only way one can be "taught by Him" is by filling up with HIS words.

The admonishing is not making the flesh crawl but:

Noutheteo (g3560) noo-thet-eh'-o; from the same as 3559; to put in mind, i.e. (by impl.) to caution or reprove gently: - admonish, warn.

Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: Col.1:28

Preaching consists of "warning and teaching" it does not consist of "preaching." This is the same activity performed when preaching or teaching the Biblical material written as songs or in metrical form.

Preaching or singing self-composes sermons or songs is preaching the preacher or composer: it is not preaching Christ.

A lot of songs are "low level speaking in tongues." The ever popular songs of crying: "Lord, Lord" have zero value in the collective assembly however valuable they might be in private devotion. Paul insisted that even inspired delivery be the objective revelation from God. The form of prophesying which Paul commends is teaching:

But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. 1 Corinthians 14:3

If, by chance, there is an inspired person in Corinth they would have the power of translations. Even so:

Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? 1 Corinthians 14:6

Paul said, in effect, I wouldn't be that silly because I know your language. This was a condemnation of the Corinthians because their "speaking in tongues" was not a direct revelation from Christ the Spirit. If they needed to know anything they still had to ask Paul who as an apostle had the exclusive right to the speaking in tongues phenomena in his apostolic presence.

Our Pavarotti says:

"Don't forbid singing opera. However, I had rather hear five words in prose than ten thousand of your words in opera!" You would not say, "Oh boy, Pavarotti said that I should sing opera." No, you would hang your head like a dog licking his master's hands and weep for shame!

Jesus identified the Jewish clergy attempting to triumph over (Jubilate or ruwa) others, as children playing their little musical instruments trying to force Him to dance in the feminine choral dance of Dionysus worship. This would have proven that Jesus was effeminate and, as in Sodom and Gommorah, put Him in a different form of danger because the Celebrative, Musical worship Feast of Tabernacles identified the priestly class as Sodomites

And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. Re.11:8

While Paul defined true spiritual gifts so that Corinth could recognize them in the remote event that any of them every received one, he said that they were carnal and so ungifted that they couldn't even settle a dispute among themselves. Surely not legitimate tongue speakers in Corinth! His language is frightening to those who pretended to speak in tongues but were just practicing their old paganism:

All are not apostles,
are they?
All are not prophets,
are they?
All are not teachers,
are they?
All are not workers of miracles,
are they? 1Cor 12:29NAS

To guard against tongues and to absolutely prohibit what was happening Paul demanded:

If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret (translate). 1Cor 14:27 (Note: you cannot translate gibberish which you learned in a course).

If they controlled themselves to permit two or three this would prevent speaking in tongues because it was their sign of superiority. If they had to speak true revelation as confirmed by another gifted person this would also stop what they were doing. You cannot market words out of your own spirit or mind.

"In order to properly understand this section, it must be noticed that Paul refers to two different types of tongues here in this text - legitimate tongues (glwssai") - always a plural reference; and pagan ecstatic speech (glwssh) - always a. singular reference.

The word "unknown" is not in the text and is supplied by the KJV. The two words are:

glossa means a known language which has been given supernaturally to teach or edify. This was permitted in the assembly only if there was an inspired prophet and he was delivering doctrinal content readily translated by another prophet. This would shut down any pretense to supernatural revelation.

heteroglossos means a tongue which is not a language which can be interpreted in the church. Paul quotes Isaiah 28 to show that those insisting upon speaking such gibberish are attempting to subvert the assembly and to triumph over or rule over the flock. The Assyrians did not want to converse in the "Judean" language but in the language of Syria so that they "congregation" could not know what was happening.

Five words in a known language is worth ten thousand in gibberish. This means that unknown tongues literally has zero value. Don't do it in church. Because this was a female or effeminate practice women were to be silent in the assembly.

Notice that sermonizing (low-level speaking in tongues) is outlawed on the same basis that women preachers are outlawed - they are not inspired!!

But if there be no interpreter (translater-explainer), let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak (preach) to himself, and to God. 1Cor 14:28

Let the prophets (only inspired males) speak(teach) two or three, and let the other judge. 1Cor 14:29

If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. (sit down and shut up) 1 Corinthians 14:30

For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. 1 Corinthians 14:31 (the two or three inspired men, not the whole congregation)

Comfort is parakaleo which means to "invite, implore, give exhortation." This happens because the Words of Christ are Spirit and Truth (John 6:63)

Paul allows no room for self-composed songs or sermons in this gathering. Anything said must be inspired or read. This leaves the well-understood option available to the none inspired at this time: "give your self to reading and doctrine." Professional preachers who reject this usurp the authority of the elders and the whole church.

Since an overseer is entrusted with God's work, he must be blameless--not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Tit 1:7

Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. Tit 1:8

He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage (admonish) others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. Tit 1:9

For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision group. Ti 1:10

Mataiologos (g3151) mat-ah-yol-og'-os; from 3152 and 3004; an idle (i.e. senseless or mischievous) talker, i.e. a wrangler: - vain talk

Why won't they just preach or sing the inspired Word of God:

They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach--and that for the sake of dishonest gain. Tit 1:11

The professional, dominant "pastors" should be careful as they permit and enlist women to Co-minister with them in a public, paid way while publically trying to silence "them what pays them." The church may catch on to the fact that the dominant males do not have a legitimate "berth as Captain on the Good Ship Lollipop" except "by your leave" of the congregation needing external help.

First, it should be noted that Paul restricts any preside-over, preaching role to those who are supernaturally inspired by Christ to deliver His Word. If there is no inspired speaker or prophet then he, along with the women, should just sit down and shut up.

This permits Christ to speak to the assembly in the already-preached sermons and already-composed songs of inspiration. There is no doubt that many preachers believe that they are inspired to usurp authority over the men and women by cutting-and-pasting Christ's sermons.

Second, since there were no inspired apostles selected, taught and Spirit empowered who were women, Paul said the same thing he said to men who are not apostles or prophets speaking under direct inspiration:

Let your women (wife, mother) keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. 1 Corinthians 14:34

Paul's silence to the Corinthians was the verbal form:

Sigao (g4601) see-gah'-o; from 4602; to keep silent (trans. or intrans.): - keep close (secret, silence), hold peace.

Paul's silence to Timothy and in Peter's prohibition of women teaching,

Esuchia (g2271) hay-soo-khee'-ah; feminine of 2272; (as noun) stillness, i.e. desistance from bustle or language: - quietness, silence.

Esuchios (g2272) hay-soo'-khee-os; a prol. form of a comp. prob. of a der. of the base of 1476 and perh. 2192 (to hold); prop. keeping one's seat (sedentary), i.e. (by impl.) still (undisturbed, undisturbing): - peaceable, quiet.

Hedraios (g1476) hed-rah'-yos; to sit; sedentary, i.e. (by impl.) immovable: - settled, stedfast

Even the presiding elder of the synagogue (Jesus or an inspired person excepted) was expected to "take his seat." (James 2:2f and the Talmud). That is, to keep from lording it over the flock the teacher sat down. He didn't dance, prance and swing his arms around his head.

Conclusion: These words have about the same meaning and Paul used them interchangeably. Therefore, Paul was prohibiting any speaking or "standing over" or presiding roles for women. Women cannot be in subjection to Paul and Peter and put themselves on conspicuous display for any role. Because the word "authority" among women was sexual power, women could engage in no stand-up role without disturbing the sober, head-bowed atmosphere of the collective assembly.

The older women were the counselors and order keepers in the early churches. While called a deaconess in some sense there was no word of Deaconess in the Greak language. Being an aged widow she would not exercise sexual authority. It is simply not possible for a young, attractive, talented women to preside over the flock without flashing sexual authority and absolutely "taking the keys of knowledge" from people and deliberately subverting the healthy males:

Paul's silence to Timothy and in Peter's prohibition of "Thrusting Forward."

"In Ephesus, where a great multitude of sacred courtesans were attached to the shrine of Diana, women had much to unlearn. Previously they had been taught that fornication brought the worshiper into direct communion with the deity. It is worth noting that certain Gnostics and Nestorians employed authentia to indicate a force binding together the fleshly and the divine.

But converts must learn that the one Mediator between God and man was Christ Jesus, and that they must practice their newfound faith in quiet decorum rather than in the wild and clamorous orgies demanded by Ephesian religion.

"Ephesus was famous for its shrine of Diana, where thousands of sacred prostitutes believed fornication brought believers into contact with deity in much the same way the Gnostics used authentia (new female authority) to bind the flesh and the divine together.

When these women converted to Christianity they had to unlearn these pagan practices. 'Virtually without exception, female teachers among the Greeks were courtesans, such as Aspasia, who numbered Socrates and Pericles among her students. Active in every major school of philosophy, these hetairai made it evident in the course of their lectures that they were available afterwards for a second occupation.

But the Bible teaches that to seduce men in such a manner was indeed to lead them to slaughter and the halls of death (cf. Prov. 2:18; 5:5; 6:27; 9:18). The verb authentein is thus peculiarly apt to describe both the erotic and murderous." (Trombley, Who says Women Cannot teach, p. 177).

"This word, authentein, is ordinarily translated "to bear rule" or "to usurp authority." In Euripides the word begins to take on a sexual tinge.

The word should never, he announced, be used to denote tyranny, but rather murder by one's own hand, as with a sword.  (The sword was considered a phallic symbol in ancient Greece.) Moeris, also in the second century, advised his students to use another word, autodikein, as it was less coarse than authenteinThe Byzantine Thomas Magister reiterates the warning against using this objectionable term. The charred fragments of a scroll excavated from the ruins of Herculaneum demonstrate the use of authentein in a parallel position to "those wounded by the terrible shafts of Eros." The lines were penned by the rhetorician and obscene epigrammatist, Philodemus, who was nicknamed "Lascivus."

Therefore, Paul did not so much issue a Direct Command about Thrusting Forward Women but Showed How to Identify and Separate them From Christ Honoring Women.

A Christian has "crucified their body" as a living sacrifice. When we do not "reckon our bodies dead" so that we can worship in Spirit then we are still in our sins.

The Vineyard Comparison: After she (Carol Wimber) had a dream in 1976 of standing preaching to a large crowd a seven-point sermon on the gifts of the Spirit, at the final point,  'a sensation like hot electricity' hit her head, travelled down her body, then up and out of her mouth. She awakened speaking in tongues. The sensation of heat and electricity is typical of that experienced in the current revival.  She said 'Soon God stopped showing me what he had wanted to do in the past and began to show me what he was going to do in the future.   I had a strong sense of God's desire for his bride, for the whole Church - Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox.' (Riding the Third Wave - 1987)

In the article "Worship: Intimacy With God the philosophy behind the 'praise and worship' found in the Vineyard churches it is explained that there is a 'well-thought out philosophy' guiding how God is worshipped through music and movement in order to achieve the goal through "Worship: Intimacy With God" .

"After we started to meet in our home gathering, I noticed times during the meeting -- usually when we sang -- in which I experienced God deeply... occasionally we sang a song personally and intimately to Jesus, with lyrics like 'Jesus, I love you.'

Those types of songs both stirred and fed the hunger for God within me... Thus we began to see a difference between songs ABOUT Jesus and songs TO Jesus. "About that time we realised our worship blessed God, that it was for God alone and not just a vehicle of preparation for the pastor's sermon. This was an exciting revelation.

After learning about the central place of worship in our meetings, there were many instances in which all we did was worship God for an hour or two.

"At this time we also discovered that singing was not the only way to worship God. Because the word worship means literally to bow down, it is important that our bodies are involved in what our spirits are saying. In scripture this is accomplished through bowing heads, lifting hands, kneeling, and even lying prostrate before God. ... we are blessed as we worship him.

He visits his people with manifestations of the Holy Spirit. "Thus worship has a two-fold aspect: communication with God through the basic means of singing and praying, and communication from God though teaching and preaching the word, prophecy, exhortation, etc. We lift him up and exalt him, and as a result are drawn into his presence where he speaks to us."

"In the Vineyard we see five basic phases of worship, phases through which leaders attempt to lead the congregation.... as we pass through these phases we are headed toward one goal:

intimacy with God.".... The fourth phase is described as "God Visits His People when "Expression then moves to a zenith, a climactic point, not unlike physical lovemaking... We have expressed what is in our hearts and minds and bodies, and now it is time to wait for God to respond.

Stop talking and wait for Him to speak, to move. I call this, the fourth phase, visitation:"

The fifth phase is called "Generosity "The fifth phase of worship is the giving of substance. The church knows so little about giving, yet the Bible exhorts us to give to God. it is pathetic to see people preparing for ministry who don't know how to give. That is like an athlete entering a race, yet he doesn't know how to run. If we haven't learned to give money, we haven't learned anything... " From Source

All ancient pagan musical worship was to bring one into the presence of the gods or make the spirit COME. They were not timid about it.

Paul also knew that women were absolutely vital to the Seeker oracles such as that of Apollo (Apollyon, Abbydon) at Delphi where women and theatrical performance were the attractive, seductive and murderous authority.

Josephus notes that Agrippa established his own Seeker-Center with the people's wealth. This repeated something identical to the Judas Sicarri event in triumphing over Jesus.

One cannot assume the "crouching dog" position of sober, solemn worship and at the same time display one's own "talent" to (shudder) bring the worshipers into the presence of God!!!

This same law applies to many effeminate men who cannot resist the stand up, song and dance called sermonizing which deliberately usurps authority over Christ by cutting-and-pasting His Word.

Feminist Denial of Inspiration

The Biblical evidence cannot be refuted. However, Coming out of Bible College is the feminist translation:

"14.34-38 Women should keep silent and submissive in church (NOT!)"

"She" indicates that Paul didn't want to break up the sex parties. He was sending mixed signals and really demanded "Let your women not keep silent in the church: for it is permitted for them to speak."

Truth Did Not Originate In Corinth

Revealing the Word was not one of the gifts even if the Corinthians had one single gift. If truth needed to be revealed, Paul would speak the commandments of Christ.

Paul was an apostle-prophet. Therefore, he anticipates such an outrageous, anti-Christian distortion of the Word and sends a plea for repentance:

Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? 1 Corinthians 14:36NIV

If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 14:37

But if any man (or woman?) be ignorant, let him be ignorant. 1 Corinthians 14:38

Paul says: "You do not have the authority to originate the Word of God. Therefore, you do not have the authority to prophesy as a prophet. Pagan prophesying in heteroglossos is strictly forbidden." Paul even silences the male would-be prophets by saying, "I will give you a test." If you are a prophet, you will know that you do not originate the word. Therefore, you will wait for an inspired message from me.

Inspired by the Spirit of Christ, Paul could have said: "They say that you must be silent but I say that you must not be silent." He did not. Nor was he quoting those old Corinthian conservatives wanting to break up the orgy.

Reject Paul and you reject Christ Who is Spirit!

And just for good measure Paul wrote to shame such effrontery:

Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. 1Ti 2:11

But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man (aner), but to be in silence. 1Ti 2:12

Authenteo (g831) ow-then-teh'-o; from a comp. of 846 and an obsol. hentes , (a worker); to act of oneself, i.e. (fig.) dominate: - usurp authority over

Autos (g846) ow-tos'; from the particle au , [perh. akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind] (backward);

> The speaking in tongues and using musical instruments was almost exclusively a female activity. Isn't it interesting that in chapter 13 Paul equates tongues to the instruments used to panic the enemy or get a message from the "gods" at the local oracles.

> In chapter fourteen, the songs are "authorized" out of the mind or spirit of the song writer. This is unlawful authority usurping the role of Lord Jesus Christ.

> Paul also equated tongues to speaking into the air. This was a common practice in worshiping the female air goddess, Juno.

So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall (utter words) speak into the air. 1 Cor 14:9

> And this is related to playing the flute which in Hebrew means to pollute or prostitute:

Auleo (g832) ow-leh'-o; from 836; to play the flute: - pipe.

g109 means to breathe unconsciously

Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air,

the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Ep.2:2

The Judas Bag was a "bag for carrying the mouthpieces of wind instruments." It is made up of two Greek words:

Speaking in tongues and
Of the world or Kosmos.

It was the spirit of Satan working in Judas to try to triumph over Jesus. Therefore the Jewish leaders were identified as flute-playing children.

> The self authority was effeminate men trying to triumph over Jesus by exercising sexual authority of the Dionysus, female dance and song:

They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept. Luke 7:32

> The lifeless instruments of warfare would not be appropriate in church: neither would speaking in tongues.

And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? 1 Cor 14:7

When you reject the simple Word which you can read for yourself, God seems to love to send you a strong delusion, always through a strong deluder, to make a fool out of you. But Paul said that "fools love to be fooled."

Any time the sermons are made-up to meet your needs rather than just reading and doing expository explanation; or singing or playing musical instruments or dancing or dramatizing you can bet that the composers, choreographers, singers, dancers, actors and musicians believe that prophecy originates with them.

If presumptious males would just sit down and shut up it would not be difficult for women to do the same. If men usurp the authority of Christ through Paul then don't be surprized if dominant women say, "I want some of that." And dominant males will roll over and play dead because if the women have to sit down then most men will have to sit down.
