Christ Our Righteousness

Christ Our Righteousness By Rubel Shelly reviewed and refuted: February 27, 2005

Rubel Shelly: It is a matter of great importance to me these days to stress that biblical faith is less systematic, formulaic, and juridical than relational.

The underlying fact in the biblical story is less that laws have been broken and criminals deserve to be punished
than that
love has been offended and a precious-but-severed connection needs somehow to be renewed.

Amos did not condemn Israel because they KEPT the formula but were not AUTHENTICAL RELATIONAL!

re·la·tion·al Function: adjective

1 : of or relating to kinship
2 : characterized or constituted by relations
3 : having the function chiefly of indicating a relation of syntax <has is notional in he has luck, relational in he has gone>
4 : relating to, using, or being a method of organizing data in a database so that it is perceived by the user as a set of tables
- re·la·tion·al·ly adverb

Because they rejected God's right to DEFINE how He is to be worshipped, the WAY IN WHICH THEY ACTED OUT THEIR WORSHIP WAS WRONG.

Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Rom 3:24

Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; Rom 3:25

The LAW of "salvation by grace through faith" has its own PREAMBLE. Paul defined Baptism as the time and place where we are RISEN with Christ.

See the WHOLE story in Ephesians 2

I would say that Adam and Eve BROKE the Law of God but not THE Law of Moses. Their violation of law BROKE their relationship. Therefore, sin came upon all people because all sin. Sin is a violation of a LAW and not just a strained relaionship.

Jesus said without preamble:

He that believes AND is baptized SHALL BE SAVED.

THAT is a statement of CAUSE AND EFFECT. Therefore it is THE law. Because Christ as "son" or Word speaks only what He hears from the "Father" or Thought Whom was within Christ who held FULL DEITY, one JUSTIFIES God by believing what He as SON or WORD SPEAKS. Not justifying God says to God in Christ "You are a liar."

Then the SON spoke what He heard from the FATHER and spoke the CONSEQUENCES of NOT believing what He has just said:

He that DISBELIEVES shall be DAMNED

Because there is NO OTHER PRECEDENT to "he that believes" except His present definition of BELIEVETH to ALWAYS include obedience, the APISTOS is the persho who DOES NOT BELIEVE the statement Jesus JUST MADE which includes two TENETS of a law:

He that believes AND is baptized SHALL BE SAVED.

The word APISTOS means that one is TREACHEROUS: one who DOES NOT believe and IS NOT BAPTIZED is one who DISBELIEVETH. That does not make a person simply lack belief that Jesus is the Son of God because the Pharisees believed but refused to CONFESS. In Luke 7 they were WORSE than the worst because they REJECTED THE COUNSEL OF GOD by NOT BEING baptized by John or Jesus' personal baptizers.

WWJD? He would NOT be a traitor BECAUSE He was BAPTIZED TO FULFILL all Righteousness (obey God's command). That means <b>TO FULLY PREACH BAPTISM.</b>

Jesus said that you MAKE DISCIPLES of believers by BAPTIZING AND further teaching.

The DISCIPLES were identified as CHRISTIANS.

Easy conclusion: Only believers who are (and) baptized CAN BE CHRISTIANS.

Those who DO NOT believe the Baptism-Salvation connection CANNOT be a Christian any more than one who spat on the flag could become a citizen when he was supposed to TAKE THE OATH. It just DON'T MATTER but Max Lucado says that the Bible does not speak of an unbaptized BELIEVER.

Noone disputed that until the year 1525 when the Baptist's BELIEVER'S BAPTIZM was invented or rather STOLEN from an ancient, common PAGAN BAPTISM.

Rubel Shelly goes into his own marriage as proof text for the covenant and laws of God. I won't waste your time with the ME stuff. However, Rubel's wife is pretty well STUCK with Rubel. God is NOT stuck and He has no trouble shaking the dust from His feet when people try to weasel out of His laws and commandments by using the Law of Moses and equating it to keeping Christ's commandments. Rubel Shelly will make the same unseemly mistake of trying to SAVE israel condemned by Amos, Hosea and Isaiah by falsely claiming that they KEEP THE LAWS PERFECTLY but had a bad RELATIONAL THINGY WITH GOD. Sure, the church is the bride of Christ but our relationship with god is that of a puking child to a parent. A parent commands simply because a child is not EQUAL enough to depend on "relationship" of birth.

You remember that the Law of Moses was added because of transgression at Mount Sinai. That transgression was the musical idolatry of the Egyptian "trinity." God is a jealous God and He does not share His Godhood with a Family of Gods. In their TRINITARIANISM from which God had just saved them by faith and grace WHEN they went in and under the Red Sea. Only after they were on the other side did God give His Good Spirit in the form of instructions and The Book of the Covenant.

God defines Himself in a "systematic, formulaic" way and THAT formula is NOT 3 = 1.

If you DENY that God is ONE then no relational "budy system" will clear you of His juridical wrath!

They broke the covenant by rising up to PLAY which included singing, dancing, clapping and instrumental music. Consistent with all of the "musical" examples this was their prayer to God that they be permitted to return to their old worship. Stephen and several Psalms and the prophets declared that "God turned them over to worship the starry host."

God then gave the Law of Moses and the laws WERE NOT GOOD and people COULD not live by the Law of Moses whereas they could have lived by OBEYING the Covenant.

In effect, God divorced Israel for the very SINS Rubel Shelly is most famous for. In fact, he and John York use the Exodus as PATTERNISM for church organization and worship. The meaning of COMMUNITY is COMMUNE.

Rubel Shelly: But would anybody seriously disagree with my claim that a good marriage is less systematic, formulaic, and juridical than relational? In precisely the same way, my claim is that biblical faith is less systematic, formulaic, and juridical than relational.

That is true but Rubel cannot cause his wife--or the church of Christ--to weep without DOING DAMAGE which probably cannot be healed. Unless they have OBEYED the Law they are NOT married in a legal sense however RELATIONAL they are. Furthermore, when one BREAKS THE LAW the other is freed just as surely as one who is DEAD TO THE LAW is legally freed (1 Cor. 7)

Rubel Shelly: Throughout the Old Testament, the concept of covenant relationship is at the heart of all theology. Beginning with Abraham in particular, the salvation story of Scripture unfolds around a covenant. God covenanted with Abraham. And it was Abraham's faith -- not his good performance, not his ethical behavior, certainly not his obedience to a Law not yet given -- that was "credited to him as righteousness." For the sake of that covenant, he remembered his descendants who were enslaved in Egypt and delivered them through Moses.

While it is one sided a covenant is a LAW. The Book of the Covenant was a covenant of Grace. Nevertheless, it had LAWS which were conditional. When Israel rose up to PLAY in the musical idolatry of the Triad the law was so totally violated that God BROKE the tablets and gave them The Book of the Law and turned them over to worship the STARRY HOST.

But, God and Paul contradicts this. When Abraham was not justified by LAW in Rubel's terms, Paul always meant THE LAW OF MOSES. You will remember that God had LAWS in the garden of Eden. Indeed, who can be so presumptious as to OUTLAW God for approving or disapproving based on how people treat His laws. Adam and Eve could not have been created by any set of laws. And yet, God followed His laws in creating them and and giving laws as statements of "cause and effect." When they broke God's laws the fall proved their lack of faith but their PUNISHMENT was based on their PERFORMANCE.

Basil on Baptism as the way to RESTORE covenant relationshi Chapter XV (329-379) On Baptism and Grace

Reply to the suggested objection that we are baptized "into water." Also concerning baptism.

34. What more? Verily, our opponents are well equipped with arguments.
........... We are baptized, they urge, into water, and of course we shall not honour the water above all creation,
........... or give it a share of the honour of the Father and of the Son.

The arguments of these men are such as might be expected from angry disputants, leaving no means untried in their attack on him who has offended them, because their reason is clouded over by their feelings.
........... We will not, however, shrink from the discussion even of these points.
........... If we do not teach the ignorant, at least we shall not turn away before evil doers.

But let us for a moment retrace our steps.

35. The dispensation of our God and Saviour concerning man is a recall from the fall and a return from the alienation caused by disobedience to close communion with God. This is the reason for the sojourn of Christ in the flesh, the pattern life described in the Gospels, the sufferings, the cross, the tomb, the resurrection; so that the man who is being saved through imitation of Christ receives that old adoption. [Before the fall]

For perfection of life the imitation of Christ is necessary, not only in the example of gentleness, lowliness, and long suffering set us in His life, but also of His actual death.
........... So Paul, the imitator of Christ, says, "being made conformable unto his death;
........... if by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead."
How then are we made in the likeness of His death?
........... In that we were buried with Him by baptism.

What then is the manner of the burial? And what is the advantage resulting from the imitation?

First of all, it is necessary that the continuity of the old life be cut. And this is impossible less a man be born again, according to the Lord's word; for the regeneration, as indeed the name shews, is a beginning of a second life.

So before beginning the second, it is necessary to put an end to the first. For just as in the case of runners who turn and take the second course,
........... a kind of halt and pause intervenes between the movements in the opposite direction,
........... so also in making a change in lives it seemed necessary for death to come as mediator between the two,
........... ending all that goes before, and beginning all that comes after.

How then do we achieve the descent into hell?
........... By imitating, through baptism, the burial of Christ.

First, Rubel makes the Calvinist mistake of equating justification to salvation. Abraham was justified by faith each and every time God commanded him to do something and Abraham DID IT. That is, Abraham keep the covenant pure by keeping God's LAWS. But, let's remind the reader that these are NOT the Law of Moses. And it is misleading to use the LAW OF MOSES which COULD NOT and was not intended to make people righteous with keeping God's commandments.

Rubel Shelly will find NO example of FAITH ONLY but in Hebrews 11 Paul shows that people were justified by FAITH when that faith was changed to an ACTIVE VERB. A person is "justified" or God approved when they obey His commandments. And he is merciful or extends grace to those who keep His covenant which DEMANDS faithful obedience.

And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments. De.5:10

So it IS possible to have a love relationship with God and NOT keep His commandments. God does not excuse us because we LOVE Him because breaking His commandments is proof of a bad relationship.

In no case does God justify us because of our WORKS which are demonstrated in about any modern new style WORSHIP ritual where Rubel says the musical ministers can "lead you into the presence of God." However, doing CHURCH or qahal or synagogue in the wilderness was for reading or rehearsing the Law because those who flaunted it would die:

But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul. Jos.22:5

And said, I beseech thee, O Lord God of heaven,
........... the great and terrible God,
........... that keepeth covenant and mercy
........... for them that love him
........... and observe his commandments: Ne.1:5

And I prayed unto the Lord my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments; Da.9:4

Apparently one can love and have faith but REFUSE to keep God's commandments:

If ye love me, keep my commandments. Jn.14:15

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them,
........... he it is that loveth me:
........... and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father,
........... and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Jn.14:21

If ye keep my commandments,
........... ye shall abide in my love;
........... even as I have kept my Fathers commandments,
........... and abide in his love. Jn.15:10

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 1Jn.5:2

For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 1Jn.5:3

And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it. 2 Jn.1:6

Rubel Shelly: Paul even claimed that the coming of Christ and the formation of a community of those who believe in him were but outworkings of that original covenant with Father Abraham.

That is true: the Law of Moses was a parenthetical period where Israel prayed for and was granted the right to "worship like the nations." However, they would not get away with it. The Law rituals had to do with the external body. However, Jesus said that we MUST worship in the new place of our human SPIRIT as we give heed to His Words in song and sermon.

The SPIRIT is not ministered in supernatural signs: Paul said that he MINISTERED the SPIRIT by PREACHING and they received the spirit by hearing. If the Galatians are PREDESTINATED why is Paul worried about their not being saved?

Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain. Gal 3: 4
........ He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you,
........ ........ doeth he it by the works of the law,
........ ........ or by the hearing of faith? Gal 3: 5
........ Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Gal 3: 6

What is the meaning of "believed" God? Was this FAITH ONLY?

And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; Gen 26:4

BECAUSE that Abraham OBEYED my voice, and kept my CHARGES, my COMMANDMENTS, my STATUTES, and my LAWS. Gen 26:5

But, God, I have been telling people to keep your commandments is pure legalism. So, in the study of Peter, David repudiates a later statement that God wants ALL men to repent becuase it seems to contradict Peter's earlier statement about the ELECT.

The Paul who wrote Galatians 3:6 took pains to make us wise enough not to be trapped by future "calvinists".

> Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing but the keeping of the commandments of God. 1Co.7:19

> For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love Ga.5:6

And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: Col 2:10

In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Col 2:11

Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. Col 2:12

> For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. Ga.6:15

Therefore, Paul said nothing about FAITH ONLY but saving faith is the FAITH OF ABRAHAM which kept all of God's commands.

Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. Gal 3: 7

Abraham lived BEFORE the Law of Moses, the Jews trusted the Law of Moses, therefore, Paul is warning about the rituals of the law of trusting any misunderstanding that THEY were predestinated. This predestination view necessarily held that OTHERS were not favored by God and COULD NOT repent or be saved and go to heaven.

The Old Testament does not teach predestination. However, scripture PREDESTINATED that all would be united in Christ:

And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, Gal 3: 8
........ preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

Paul leapfrogs over the Law of Moses and proves that the Jews had no lasting favor based on their DNA. Therefore, faith and not Mosaic law is what God approves as righteousness BECAUSE it obeys God's commandment. More importantly as with John's Baptism faith DOES NOT reject the counsel of God for the Pharisees lives that they be baptized.

So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. Gal 3: 9

For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. Gal 3: 10

From the tables you can see that the LAW or MONARCHY period was a parenthetic period. Israel rose up to PLAY which was musical idolatry. As a result God turned most of the nation over to WORSHIP THE STARRY HOSTS (Stephen, Acts 7 etc.,). Those who were approved by God walked by faith. That means that they kept God's commandments. God never condemns anyone for obeying His laws. However, the Jews were almost always worshipers of pagan Gods.

The problem for Paul and others is that the Jews looked at the BLACK HOLE of the Law period and trusted themselves because they thought that CHOSEN FOR A PURPOSE was predestinated to righteousness.

So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. Gal 3:9

.

But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. Gal 3:11

.

For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. Gal 3:10

.

The gospel plan is not legalism: the Law says do this and I will not punish you. The Christian system of faith says: Do this and I will give you something impossible to you and eternal life with God. One is WORKS and the other is grace through faith.

Law says "do every jot and title of this Law and you will prove yourself righteousness." However, James says that even showing partiality is a sin and this "little" sin brings the entire Law down on your head.

Grace through faith, however, says "Just express your faith in being baptized" because being dipped in water is one of the LEAST WORKS- INTENSIVE thing one can do. Nothing is more work's intense than to labor trying to get the SIGN that you are predestinated and being legalistic in rejecting God's commands for fear that one might LOSE their predestination. Just trying to explain what not even John Calvin could explain is a grand scheme of WORKS.

GOD PREDESTINATED THAT "ALL" WOULD BE DECLARED SINNERS. This gets any trust in the LAW or of the Jew's ARROGANCE that they were PREDESTINATED:

A LEGALIST is one who seeks to be justified by the Law of Moses which wwas added because of transgression:

And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. Gal 3:12
Christ hath
redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: Gal 3:13

Jesus did that at the cross: was everyone saved at that instant?

God PREDESTINATED that purely natural Jews were not His Elect: only those who are spiritually related to Abraham will be saved:

But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. Gal 3:11

.

That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Gal 3:14

.

And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. Gal 3:12

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: Gal 3:13

.

Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a mans covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. Gal 3:15

Now to Abraham and his seed were the (predestinated) promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. Gal 3:16

And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ,

the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after,
cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. Gal 3:17

For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. Gal 3:18

For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Gal 3:27

For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:26

Rubel Shelly: When later Old Testament prophets such as Amos, Hosea, and Isaiah excoriated their fellow-Israelites, it was often in the strange language of telling them how God "hated" or "despised" their obedient observance of the Sabbath or tithing.

They had begun to think and teach that they could maintain the covenant with Yahweh through keeping the rules without respecting the relationship -- with either God or man.

Amos, Hosea and Isaiah define a PAGAN worship of the astrial deities. One such was Chiun which was probabl Saturn whose Chaldee number is 666. Molech was the OUTBREAKER of a new style musical worship right there in Jerusalem.

There was nothing strange about the language of god HATING their Sabbaths because God's PATTERN was that this was a day of REST: it was never a day for religious rituals. During the festivals both the FIRST day and SEVENTH days were for holding a holy convocation. This word means to READ or REHEARSE the Word which they had or could be taught by their elders, priests or Levites.

In the wilderness and in Israel [Amos was from Judah] they POLLUTED their sabbaths specificially with music, wine, sexuality and homosexuality which were always partners in crime.

Chalal (h2490) khaw-lal'; a prim. root [comp. 2470]; prop. to bore, i. e. (by impl.) to wound, to dissolve; fig. to profane (a person, place or thing), to break (one's word), to begin (as if by an "opening wedge"); denom. (from 2485) to play (the flute): - begin (* men began), defile, * break, defile, * eat (as common things), * first, * gather the grape thereof, * take inheritance, pipe, player on instruments, pollute, (cast as) profane (self), prostitute, slay (slain), sorrow, stain, wound.

Lucifer was CAST AS PROFANE out of heaven and showed up in the garden of Eden as the "serpent" meaning a Musical Enchanter who wholly seduced Eve in a sexual sense:

Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord God; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. Eze 28:12

Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Eze 28:13

Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Eze 28:14

Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. Eze 28:15

By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Eze.28:16

Tithing, defended by Rubel Shelly, was ADDED when the musical idolaters brought on the curse of a priesthood so that they could never approach God again. The TITHE was grace because God provided FREE farms, orchards, herds and houses to the farmers ONLY. From those free farms they paid the tribe of Levi a ten percent RENT. The tribe of Levi who was the civil government paid the priests 10% of the 10% to offer animal sacrifices. Only 2 out of 7 tithes went directly to Jerusalem. Amos is condemning frequent and boasted of tithes to support THEIR OWN habit of wine, women and song right there in their temple where the APIS bull representing the Egyptian Trinity was worshipped. Remember that God had cursed them because of their musical trinitarianism at Mount Sinai when He ABANDONED them to worship the astrial gods. See Stephen in Acts 7.

They were not of the tribe of Levi and not in Jerusalem and therefore had NO RIGHT to take a tithe from those who had been given FREE FARMS.

Therefore, the "preachercraft" (which A. Campbell says is the craftiest craft of all) has no right to take a tithe and add music other than to prove that God has abandoned to worship the STARS until they can be transported into Babylon.

Here is the CLUE to the EXODUS PATTERNISTS who are LEGALISTS and producers of SECTARIANISM prove that they CANNOT have ever read the book of Exodus and the many Psalms and prophets which make it clear to any one past Bible 101aaa that BECAUSE of the musical idolatry of a trinity God ABANDONED them to worship the starry host. The nation of Israel set up the same GOLDEN CALVES in the north and worshipped the same astrial deities TO WHICH God had sentenced them at Mount Sinai. We have covered this extensively in reviewing Terry Briley's repetition of the SAME false dogma which is then used as PROOF that the wine, women and music was OK: they just had a bad mental attitude.

Terry Briley at Lipscomb: "The book of Isaiah begins with an analysis of Israel's worship. Outwardly, there's nothing wrong. But their hearts are not engaged and their lives are disconnected from their worship."

See how Rubel Shelly uses Isaiah 5 to prove the same heresy.

See Adam Clark to refute this.

Hear Amos, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Hosea, Stephen REFUTE this false teaching.

When Israel's elders "fired" God and demanded a king like he NATIONS they meant to be able to worship like the nations:

Also with uplifted hand I swore to them in the desert that I would disperse them among the nations and scatter them through the countries, Eze.20:23

You say, "We want to be like the nations (heathen, gowy), like the peoples of the world, who serve wood and stone." But what you have in mind will never happen. Eze.20:32

Therefore, the worship in Israel and even in Judah at Jerusalem the musical worship was LIKE THE NATIONS to whom god had "married" them when they polluted His Covenant of Grace.

You can CONNECT as many hearts to musical idolatry as you wish but it will still be idolatry.

"Sacrifices, rituals, festivals honoring Yahweh abounded,
but these rites were tangible evidence of lack of knowledge,
........... for they expressed the popular belief
........... that Yahweh could be pleased and pacified by cultic ceremonies.

"The condemnation of cultic rites introduced in Amos 4:4 f. and 5:4 f. is picked up again with new vehemence. It has been argued that Amos was not opposed to cultic ritual per se but condemned the mind set of the people by which responsibility to Yahweh was performed perfunctorily and without relationship to daily life and society.

"If we take Amos' words as they stand, there seems to be little doubt that he condemned the entire religious pattern--feasts, sacrifices, ritual music, offerings, tithes--everything. Gerald LaRue, History of the O.T.

This is the same common view of Amos where "nothing which they did in their religious festivals was wrong worship: they just had a bad mental attitude." Justin Martyr had a different view which we quote in part:

Have ye offered unto Me victims and sacrifices in the wilderness, O house of Israel? saith the Lord. And have ye taken up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Raphan, the figures which ye made for yourselves?

And I will carry you away beyond Damascus, saith the Lord, whose name is the Almighty God. Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria:

those who are named among the chiefs have plucked away the first-fruits of the nations:

the house of Israel have entered for themselves.

Pass all of you unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye unto Hamath the great, and go down thence to Gath of the strangers, the noblest of all these kingdoms, if their boundaries are greater than your boundaries.

Ye who come to the evil day, who are approaching, and who hold to false Sabbaths; who lie on beds of ivory, and are at ease upon their couches; who eat the lambs out of the flock, and the sucking calves out of the midst of the herd;

who applaud at the sound of the musical instruments;
they reckon them as stable,
and not as fleeting,

who drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments, but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

Would all of these including singing, clapping and playing musical instruments because you believe that they have MAGICAL POWER be acceptable IF you just grieved? No. All of these are wrong as worship.

In Plato's Ion we see both the singing and playing

O you, who cause a voice to sing from your seven-stringed lyre, a voice that lets lovely-sounding hymns peal forth in the rustic lifeless horn,

[885] son of Leto, I will blame you before this light. You came to me, your hair glittering with gold, when I was plucking into the folds of my robe yellow flowers [890] to bloom with golden light; grasping my white hand in yours, you led me to the bed in the cave, hearing me call on my mother, god and consort, [895] shamelessly paying homage to Aphrodite. I, the unhappy one, bore you a son, whom in fear of my mother I placed in that bed of yours, [900] where you joined with me, the miserable, the unfortunate one, in unhappy union.

Alas! and now my son and yours, oh cruel one, is gone, torn apart, a feast for birds;

[905] but you are singing to the lyre, chanting hymns.

Wherefore now they shall be captives, among the first of the nobles who are carried away; and the house of evil-doers shall be removed, and the neighing of horses shall be taken away from Ephraim.' ( Amos v. 18 to end, vi. 1-7.) And again by Jeremiah:

Collect your flesh, and sacrifices, and eat: for concerning neither sacrifices nor libations did I command your fathers in the day in which I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt.' Jer. vii. 21 f.

And again by David, in the forty-ninth Psalm, He thus said: `The God of gods, the Lord hath spoken, and called the earth, from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof. Out of Zion is the perfection of His beauty. God, even our God, shall come openly, and shall not keep silence.

Fire shall burn before Him, and it shall be very temptestuous round about Him. He shall call to the heavens above, and to the earth, that He may judge His people. Assemble to Him His saints; those that have made a covenant with Him by sacrifices. And the heavens shall declare His righteousness, for God is judge.

Hear, O My people, and I will speak to thee; O Israel, and I will testify to thee, I am God, even thy God. I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices; thy burnt-offerings are continually before me. I will take no bullocks out of thy house, nor he-goats out of thy folds: for all the beasts of the field are Mine, the herds and the oxen on the mountains.

I know all the fowls of the heavens,
and the beauty of the field is Mine.

If I were hungry, I would not tell thee; for the world is Mine, and the fulness thereof.
........... Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?

Offer unto God the sacrifice of praise, and pay thy vows unto the Most High, and call upon Me in the day of trouble, and I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify Me.

But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare My statutes, and to take My covenant into thy mouth? But thou hast hated instruction, and cast My words behind thee.

Stephen in Acts 7 says that as a result of the musical idolatry which was the worship of Molech, etc. including Saturn as a primary Wandering Star God TURNED THEM OVER TO WORSHIP THE STARRY HOST. His number is 666. Both Israel and Judah spend more money and "worship" on Satan than they did on right living and practice of social justice.

This should inform the scholar because Stephen got killed for telling the clergy of his day that the musical rejoicing of Israel at Mount Sinai was a way to ignore the Word of God's Book of the Covenant of Grace. As a result of this "transgression" God turned them over to worship the starry host. This included Remphan or Chiun in Israel and Molech in Jerusalem.

Here is how they worshiped the starry host with Molech in Jerusalem. We believe that There's Something Wrong!

They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the Lord commanded them: Psalm 106: 34

But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works. Psalm 106: 35

And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them. Psalm 106: 36

Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, Psalm 106: 37

And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood. Psalm 106: 38

Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions. Psalm 106: 39

Terry Briley at Lipscomb: Outwardly, there's nothing wrong?

Rubel Shelly: That way of thinking only got worse between their time and the arrival of Jesus. So he talked about the "fraud" and "hypocrisy" of those who kept the law in its most minute details while dishonoring the fundamental relationships of life. When he told his disciples that their righteousness would have to exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, he was hardly talking about scrupulous attention to legal details. He was calling them back to a faith that was authentically relational.

You simply cannot be AUTHENTICALLY RELATIONAL with God when you INTENTIONALLY and with a high hand decree that God's Word has been sifted away so that all that we can depend on in the seven facts ABOUT Jesus Christ. Of course, they omits the facts JESUS CHRIST taught and inspired throughout the Bible. Jesus condemned the Pharisees (professionals), Scribes (book writers) an Hypocrites which was a SECTARIAN group composed of "rhetoricians, sOPHISts (serpents), singers and musicians. These were CRAFTSMEN in Revelation 18 who performed the pretend role of SORCERY and were therefore laughed at as PARASITES.

Justin Martyr on Instrumental Music as part of a FALSE Sabbath

Taken from:

Dialogue of Justin Martyr to Trypho, a Jew Jesus Christ is God

Chapter XXII.-So Also Were Sacrifices and Oblations.

"And that you may learn that it was for the sins of your own nation, and for their idolatries and
........... not because there was any necessity for such sacrifices,
........... that they were likewise enjoined,

listen to the manner in which He speaks of these by Amos, one of the twelve, saying:

`Woe unto you that desire the day of the Lord! to what end is this day of the Lord for you?

It is darkness and not light, as when a man flees from the face of a lion, and a bear meets him; and he goes into his house, and leans his hands against the wall, and the serpent bites him. Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness and not light, even very dark, and no brightness in it? I have hated, I have despised your feast-days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies:

wherefore, though ye offer Me your burnt-offerings and sacrifices, I will not accept them; neither will I regard the peace-offerings of your presence.

"When the Hebrews were in Egypt - living as Egyptians, worshipping the Golden Calf of Horus, etc. - they also worshipped Horus's "twin," Set, whence comes Satan. Where Horus is the Golden S.U.N. in the Age of Taurus the Bull, Set represents the Serpent of the Night, i.e., the night-time sky. The battle between Horus/Jesus and Set/Satan represents the struggle between day and night for supremacy.

See Rubel Shelly and the S.U.N. god and baptizing Santa (Satana)

Take thou away from Me the multitude of thy songs and psalms; I will not hear thine instruments.

But [instead of] let judgment be rolled down as water, and righteousness as an impassable torrent.

And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands. Acts 7:41

"The triumphal hymn of Moses had unquestionably a religious character about it; but the employment of music in religious services, though idolatrous, is more distinctly marked in the festivities which attended the erection of the golden calf." (Smith's Bible Dictionary, Music, p. 589).

Have ye offered unto Me victims and sacrifices in the wilderness, O house of Israel? saith the Lord. And have ye taken up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Raphan, the figures which ye made for yourselves?

Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven;

as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness? Acts 7:42

Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon. Acts 7:43

Figure is a STAMP or MARK from:

Tumpanizo (h5178) toom-pan-id'-zo; from a der. of 5180 (mean, a drum, 'tympanum"); to stretch on an instrument of torture resembling a drum, and thus beat to death: - torture.

Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen. Acts 7:44
Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers,
unto the days of David; Acts 7:45
Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob. Acts 7:46
........... But Solomon built him an house. Acts 7:47
........... Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet. Acts 7:48

Pass all of you unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye unto Hamath the great, and go down thence to Gath of the strangers, the noblest of all these kingdoms, if their boundaries are greater than your boundaries.

Ye who come to the evil day, who are approaching, and who hold to false Sabbaths; who lie on beds of ivory, and are at ease upon their couches; who eat the lambs out of the flock, and the sucking calves out of the midst of the herd;

who applaud at the sound of the musical instruments;
they reckon them as stable,
........... and not as fleeting,

who drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments,
........... but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

Hath not my hand made all these things? Acts 7:50
Ye
stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. Acts 7:51
Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: Acts 7:52

Wherefore now they shall be captives, among the first of the nobles who are carried away;
........... and the house of evil-doers shall be removed,
........... and the neighing of horses shall be taken away from Ephraim.' ( Amos v.

John Mark Hicks: Several features characterize the fellowship meals of Israel. First, it is a moment of communion between God and his people.
........... God eats with his people as the fat is burned to him.
........... God is present at this meal. It is eaten before the Lord
........... as if God sits at the table with the worshipper.

"Music was understood to drive away hostile chthonic demons who loved tranquility and quiet. this concept of music's magical power is found in the formula of a love spell published by S. Eitrem:

"X.X. is bound with the tendons of the holy phoenix so that you will love N.N. with your whole heart and no barking dog or braying ass, cock or conjurer, the clash of cymbals or the noise of flutes or anything else under the heavens will ever set you free."

"The harmful screaming of those who were to be killed in sacrifices was particularly attractived to the wicked demons,
........... with whom the pagans believed the air (1 Corinthians 14:9) was filled.

Consequently, music was found to be especially appropriate at the time of sacrifice as a means of driving away the evil spirits who would destroy its efficacy. From this it can also be seen why music had to be uninterrupted during the actio. It was not necessary, then, that music drown out cries of pain but rather that it simply drive away the demons who had been attracted by those cries." (Quasten, Johannes, Music and Worship in Pagan and Christian Antiquity, pgs 16-17)

No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons (who distribute fortunes or gifts of spirits), not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. 1 Corinthians10:20

So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 1 Corinthians 14:9

"In Greek ritual the sacrifice was accompanied by the invocatory cries of women.
........... Their purpose was to call the good gods so that they cound enjoy the sacrifice.

Both Isaiah and Ezekiel proved that the AMOS worship was not FAITHFUL TO THE WORD but by people who were not AUTHENTICALLY RELATIONAL:

Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you,

and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the Lord. Ezek 33:30

And they come unto thee as the people cometh,

and they sit before thee as my people,

and they hear thy words,
but they will not do them:
for with their mouth they shew much love, (erotic praise songs)

but their heart goeth after their covetousness. Ezek 33:31
Ye hypocrites (actors), well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, Matt 15:7

This people draweth nigh unto me

with their mouth,

and honoreth me with their lips;
but their heart is far from me. Matt 15:8

But in vain they do worship me,
teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. Matt 15:9

And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:Matt 15:10

But He spoke to them in parables and they couldn't understand because they had the wrong "seeker" motive.
And, lo, thou art unto them

as a very lovely song
........... of one that hath a pleasant voice,
........... and can play well on an instrument:
for they hear thy words,
........... but they do them not. Ezek 33:32
Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man;

but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. Matt 15:11

And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,)

then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them. Ezek 33:33

Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? Matt 15:12

But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Matt 15:13

AND the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Ezek 34:1

Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God unto the shepherds; Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves should not the shepherds feed the flocks? Ezek 34:2

Let them alone:they be blind leaders of the blind.

And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. Matt 15:14

No one has ever suggested that people are saved by KEEPING the Law of Moses but the rise of performance preaching, music and a "tower of bable" like organization and building mega-churches comes close. The rise of dominant clergy, arosing the Musical Warrior Levites, Tithing and the keeping of days like Easter (Ishtar) is EXACTLY the meaning of trying but failing.

Those who teach that Christ in Paul WAS NOT SILENT when he defined the Only Old or New Testament meaning of worship as "giving heed to the Word of God" are slandered as legalists, patternists, sectarians and even compared to brother killers.

Trying to use the FAITH ONLY dodge and discounting obedience to God's commandments as the only meaning of FAITH makes strange bedfellows treat the worship of Israel faithfulness WITHOUT a proper relationship is proof that people use Grace-only to justify intentional sowing of discord and offending tens of thousands of these little ones.
