Al Maxey has changed his mind by reading the "doctors of the Law" who "take away the key to knowledge." He denies all of the direct connections between faith, baptism and remission of sins and subjugates all of the REST to a "faith only" finding by  a spirit.
Peter's Problem Preposition Reflecting on "EIS" in Acts 2:38

See Exposing Al Maxey

Al Maxey Eis: We are becoming a people transformed by the Spirit into a more Jesus-focused, grace-affirming part of the universal One Body of Christ. The sectarian walls WE erected to isolate ourselves from others, excluding them from our midst, are coming down, and we are embracing other disciples of Christ as beloved brethren.
Paul understood that the Word of God IS called Spirit and Life: it is the MIND of Christ inspired and protected by Jesus now called The Holy Spirit.  If a "spirit" is working on you it may be of a grosser sort which can sneak in on the imagination of theologians and self seekers.
Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world:
        but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind,
        that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Al Maxey missed it by translating SPEAK into SING: The only resource for sermon and song is "that which is written for our learning."

Ephesians 5:17 Wherefore be ye not unwise,
        but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine,
        wherein is excess; [getting fluted down with wine]
        but be filled with the Spirit;
Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
         singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
You need to worry when people decide that the Words of Christ must be filtered through clerical price.
2Corinthians 11:12 But what I do, that I will do,
        that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion;
        that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we.
2Corinthians 11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers,
         transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
2Corinthians 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
2Corinthians 11:15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers
        also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness;
        whose end shall be according to their works.
"Exclusion" from any group is only caused by people who use their own imagination to become SECTARIAN by IMPOSING something not commanded, not required and almost always discording.  Of course, Al is almost always speaking of musical instruments (machines) imposed by those with whom he wants to be INCLUDED.

Alexander Campbell, Christian System, Prop X quotes

Bp. White says, that "regeneration, as detached from baptism, never entered into any creed before the 17th century."

Whitby, on John 3:5,says, "That our Lord here speaks of baptismal regeneration, the whole Christian church from its earliest times has invariably taught."

Our modern "great divines," even in America, have taught the same. Timothy Dwight, the greatest Rabbi of Presbyterians the New World has produced, says, vol. iv. pp. 300, 301, "to be born again, is precisely the same thing as to be born of water and the Spirit."--"To be born of water is to be baptized." And how uncharitable!--He adds,

"He who understanding the nature and authority of this institution, refuses to be baptized,

WILL NEVER ENTER INTO THE VISIBLE NOR INVISIBLE KINGDOM OF GOD." Vol. iv. p. 302. So preached the President of Yale.

George Whitefield, writing on John 3:5, says, But I will say with the renowned President of Yale, that "he who, understanding the nature and authority of this institution, refuses to be baptized, will never enter the visible nor invisible kingdom of God." By the "visible and invisible kingdom," he means the kingdom of grace and glory. He adds on the same page, "He who persists in this act of rebellion against the authority of Christ, will never belong to his kingdom." Vol. iv. p. 302.

Al Maxey Eis: Thank God for allowing me to live long enough to see this new day dawn!! And yet, although progress is being made, there are still those proclaiming a sectarian sacramentalism among us with respect to the nature and purpose of water baptism, and they are still using Acts 2:38 as one of their primary "proofs."

One wonders why a "holy spirit" person would tarry so long to inform Al Maxey that what Jesus Christ -- The Holy Spirit 1 jn2 -- protected by the written record of the Apostles to MARK those who do not just obey the pattern and PREACH the Word by READING the Word rather than making merchandizing fodder out of it.

Matthew 2:1: "wise men from the east to Jerusalem,"
Matthew 2:8: "And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search"
Matthew 2:11: "And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child"
Matthew 2:12: "to Herod, they departed into their own country another way."
Matthew 2:13: "mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there"
Matthew 2:14: "by night, and departed into Egypt:"
Matthew 2:20: "mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead"
Matthew 2:21: "mother, and came into the land of Israel."
Matthew 2:22: "in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:"
Matthew 2:23: "And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that"
Matthew 3:10: "fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire."
Matthew 3:11: "you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after"
Matthew 3:12: "gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up"
Matthew 4:1: "of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of"
Matthew 4:5: "the devil taketh him up into the holy city,"
Matthew 4:8: "the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain,"
Matthew 4:12: "John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;"
Matthew 4:13: "Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders"

Acts 2:38 is stil there because Jesus told Peter how to make disciples by baptizing AND teaching them what HE commanded to be taught.

Peter then gave a perfect model of Jesus direct command by telling them / us to repent AND be baptized FOR the remission of sins. Jesus made sure that we cannot be seduced by people saying that He lied, this statement is put in many different ways.  Did Christ the Spirit fail in telling Peter how to make disciples and just now is telling Al Maxey that all of the Word is just wrong?

Repentance AND baptism is required to be saved or converted.  Repentance is being converted or turned TOWARD being included in Christ, Baptism is ENTERING into discipleship with Christ.

For instance, Peter repeating what Jesus commanded to be taught, made CERTAIN that people like Al CANNOT be accidentally  fooled.

Acts 3:18 But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets,
        that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled.
Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted,
         that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
I'm not sure how you can make THAT mean BECAUSE your sins have been blotted out.

Bible 101aaa: God does not Command, Example or Inference through the court records of a nation abandoned to worship like the pagan Gentiles. Do a search sometimes and see how the Spirit OF Christ speaks to US through the prophets.  That is why Peter said that we will never hear the daystar in our hearts until we give attention (a worship word) to the PROPHETS.  While people pick up on Pauls command to SPEAK the figurative record of the Jews fall from Grace, Paul directs us to the PROPHETS.  If you have questioned Jesus Christ about Baptism I assure you that the APISTOS word marks you as in REVOLT and a treacherous person.  Believeth means COMPLIETH: Believeth not (Apistos) meand COMPLIETH NOT.  John would say that you could not be scripturally baptized even if you wanted to. One can conclude that the fighting against God is a confession of lostness.

What all older Baptists believed: Baptism and Remission James W. Willmarth. Baptist Quarterly july, 1877 296-231

Additional note by Rocky Whitely

James W. Willmarth’s article is very relevant regarding forgiveness as the purpose of baptism according to Acts 2:38. ... The power of our salvation is the blood shed by Jesus. The divine “When” of salvation, that is, when I benefit from the death of Jesus is my immersion, that time when my faith in Jesus takes me in to the water. In each of the following Scriptures, God says that the blessings of salvation come after one’s faith obeys in baptism (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; 22:16; Rom. 6:3-11; Gal. 3:26-27; Col. 2:12; 1 Pet. 3:21). If one obeys God in baptism, he receives much more than the assurance that he has been forgiven; he receives forgiveness. If one chooses not obey God in baptism, then his judgment is in God’s hands

"Remission, and then to signify or declare Remission in Baptism,
        but (on this hypothesis) he told them to repent
        without any statement whatever as to the purpose or result,
        and also directed them to “be baptized upon the name of Jesus Christ”
        in order to profess the remission they were seeking!
And (2) Faith in Christ, the very central part of Gospel obedience, being here indissolubly linked with Baptism, Peter directed terrified sinners to declare, as an accomplished fact,
        the very Remission which they had not received,
        but were at that moment seeking; and to declare this, too,
        by Believing, as well as by Baptism!

However, Alexander Campbell had just convinced most of the Baptist Preachers in Kentucky that Baptism was REQUIRED for the remission of sins.

Third. This interpretation was doubtless suggested, and is now defended, on purely dogmatic grounds. It is feared that if we give to eis its natural and obvious meaning, undue importance will be ascribed to Baptism, the Atonement will, be undervalued, and the work of the Holy Spirit disparaged. Especially is it asserted that here is the vital issue between Baptists and Campbellites.[16] We are gravely told that if we render eis in Acts ii. 38 in order to, we give up the battle,
        and must forthwith become Campbellites;
        whereas if we translate it on account of, or in token of,
        it will yet be possible for us to remain Baptists.

Such methods of interpretation are unworthy of Christian scholars. It is our business, simply and honestly, to ascertain the exact meaning of the inspired originals, as the sacred penmen intended to convey it to the mind of the contemporary reader. Away with the question—”What ought Peter to have said in the interest of orthodoxy?” The real question is, “What did Peter say, and what did he mean, when he spoke on the Day of Pentecost, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit?”

But having entered this caveat, as a lawyer might say,
         it may do no harm to show that dogmatic dangers here exist only in imagination.
The natural and obvious interpretation cannot give undue importance to Baptism,
        for Baptism is here united with Repentance and Faith.

It cannot undervalue the Atonement,
        for the Baptism is one resting upon, and deriving all its value from, the name of the Lamb of God;
        and this is distinctly understood by the person baptized, who submits to the rite as a believer in that name.
It cannot disparage the work of the Spirit,
         since he alone effectually calls men to Repentance and Faith; and it is by
         (Greek
en, in, within the influence of) one Spirit that we were all baptized into one body, i.e.

[305] the Spirit leads the penitent believer to Baptism and blesses the rite.[17] And as to Campbellism, that spectre which haunts many good men and terrifies them into a good deal of bad interpretation,
        shall we gain anything by maintaining a false translation
        and allowing the Campbellites to be champions of the true,
        with the world’s scholarship on their side, as against us?
Whoever carries the weight of our controversy with the Campbellites upon the eis

        will break through
—there is no footing there for the evolutions of the theological skater.
         Shall we never learn that Truth has nothing to fear from a true interpretation of any part of God’s word,
         and nothing to gain by a false one?

The truth will suffer nothing by giving to eis its true signification. When the Campbellites translate in order to in Acts ii. 38, they translate correctly. Is a translation false because Campbellites endorse it?

Al Maxey Eis: "One controversial issue concerning salvation has been whether water baptism is necessary for the remission of sins. Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches have insisted that water baptism itself is the means of the remission of sins.

1 Pet. 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient,
............ when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah,

Baptism is like God, the Ark and the Water: it was given POWER by Faith which worked. God's power is always VESTED in something.

Being SAVED is the same as having our SINS REMITTED.
You will find ONLY Baptism being associated by God with REMISSION OF SINS.
Heb 10:18 where REMISSION of these is there is NO MORE OFFERING for SIN. What we call

Abraham was counted righteous BECAUSE he obeyed God's Laws, Covenant and Decrees.
Faith means COMPLY or it is DEAD.
Baptism is "TYPE or a MODEL of FORM intended FOR IMITATION." It involves, God, faith, obedience, being placed IN the coffin, being saved BY water because THAT is how God planned it and since I AM NOT GOD I will not be caught "dead" calling Him a liar.

Maybe YOU can be SAVED without the REMISSION OF SINS (connected only to baptism) but I DON'T THINK you can go into the Most Holy Place wearing DIRTY CLOTHES.  Paul says we are saved BY FAITH when we are BAPTIZED to be CLOTHED with Christ. Then we have A holy spirit translated into heaven WHEN we are added to the CHURCH which is AFTER we have been baptized.

PETER SAYS THAT BAPTISM SAVES US: DEBATE ENDED.  The question is HOW does baptism save us: baptism saves us because that is th Christ-ordained way to "call on the name of the Lord" or Request A good conscience or a holy spirit.

Al Maxey Eis:   Evangelical churches, with their roots in the Protestant Reformation, have taught that, though baptism is important as the sign and seal of justification by faith and as the sacrament of initiation into the visible church,
        it is not the means of remission of sins. Certain cults and even some descendants of Protestantism, however, have embraced the sacerdotal views of Romanism and Orthodoxy and taught that sins cannot be forgiven apart from baptism. ...

Justification by faith is not the same as salvation.

Romans 5:10 For if, when we were enemies,
        we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son,
        much more, being reconciled,
                we shall be saved by his life.

Romans 5:9 Much more then,
        being now justified by his blood, [ie. we are not Gentile dogs]
                we shall be saved from wrath through him.

Jesus sent the message to Paul:

Acts 22:14 And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee,
        that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One,
        and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.
Acts 22:15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou?
        arise, and be baptized,
        and wash away thy sins,
        calling on the name of the Lord.

Baptism is the ONLY way to Call on the Name of the Lord. Christ said that baptism WASHES AWAY  SINS: it does so because the ACT as instrumental means is the only way to request a free gift.

Al Maxey Eis: The most commonly cited biblical 'support' for the latter view is Acts 2:38. ... On the surface, in English, it seems that Peter meant that the purpose of baptism was to effect the remission of sins, which explains why baptismal remissionists so readily appeal to this verse" [E. Calvin Beisner, "Does Acts 2:38 Teach Baptismal Remission?," Christian Research Journal, vol. 28, no. 2].

That is why ALL translations understood that.

Al Maxey Eis:Yes, "on the surface, in English," the words of Peter do indeed seem to promote such a view, [that's my language]
         but deeper study and reflection show the matter to be a bit more complex than some would have us believe.
         In reality, "'Acts 2:38 assuredly confronts the interpreter with weighty problems,' says Professor Stonehouse,
         and the extent and diversity of the theological exegesis of the verse show how right he is"
         [Dr. F. F. Bruce, Commentary on the Book of Acts, p. 75]. Dr. A. T. Robertson, one of Ch

When we teach baptism as the primary demand of this verse we have missed Peter's point.
        Peter's purpose was to turn the hearts of his hearers to faith in Jesus as their Redeemer,
        who, by virtue of His shed blood, would cleanse them of their sins!

This basic emphasis is especially seen in Peter's sermon in Solomon's Colonnade where he says nothing about baptism, but instead declares to the people, "Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out" (Acts 3:19).

JESUS KNEW ABOUT AL MAXEY AND BRUCE: THIS IS WHY HE IS OFTEN REDUNDANT TO PROVE THAT SOME CANNOT GET IT.

Al Maxey Eis:"This shows that for Luke at least, and probably also for Peter,
        while baptism with water was the expected symbol for conversion,
        it was not an indispensable criterion for salvation" [The Expositor's Bible Commentary, vol. 9, p. 284].

LUKE ALSO SAID TO REFUTE AL MAXEY AND THE COMMENTARY.

Luke 1:70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
Luke 1:71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

Al Maxey Eis: For example, what do the rest of the NT writings have to say about forgiveness of sins and how such forgiveness is acquired? Paul makes the case, in Romans 4, that Abraham's transgressions were forgiven and his sins covered by faith, and that it was a gift of God's grace prior to his circumcision.

Jesus again was redundant: salvation is remission of sins, saved from out clergy enemies, the gift of A holy spirit, being added to HIS church by Christ, Having OUR perfected spirit translated into a heavenly kingdom.  Righteous by faith is also to catch those who cannot tell the difference between righteousness and regeneration.

Al Maxey Eis: Was circumcision an outward rite to which this man was required by God to submit? Yes, it was. But, as Paul notes, his forgiveness and justification were not due to this outward act, but rather based upon his faith. Paul goes farther here and informs us that this principle is true for us under this new covenant.

Forgiveness, justification, salvation are not based on our acts of faith, but upon faith itself.

THAT CALLS JESUS AND THE APOSTLES LIARS:

Ephesians2.Rom6.gif

2Thessalonians 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance
        on them that know not God,
        and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

ABRAHAM WAS NOT SAVED BY FAITH: HE WAS JUSTIFIED BECAUSE

Genesis 26:3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;
Genesis 26:4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries;
         and in thy seed [JESUS]shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
Genesis 26:5 Because that Abraham
        obeyed my voice,
        and kept my charge,
        my commandments,
        my statutes, and
        my laws.

Galatians 5:6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth anything,
        nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.

Galatians 5 sums this pattern as
We are saved by faith
For (Because that) we have been baptized into Christ.

Al Maxey Eis: The various acts (of which baptism is one) are merely evidentiary in nature: they show faith (James 2). They are essential (no one is denying that fact), but they themselves are not redemptive (as some claim).
        Thus, baptism does not remit sins,

        but evidences one's faith in and acceptance of the One who does!!

Jesus informing Paul said "be baptized and WASH AWAY THY SINS."  Guess He was lying.
Peter said that BAPTISM SAVES US.  Guess that Peter was lying?
Baptism saves because THAT is the only way Christ ordained to call on His Name.
James 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God;
        thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
James 2:20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
James 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works,
        WHEN he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
James 2:22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
James 2:23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith,
        Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness:
         and he was called the Friend of God.
James 2:24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
Al has a problem separating THE LAW OF MOSES from Obedience to a Direct Command from God.

Al Maxey Eis: However, we are still faced with that little word "for" in Acts 2:38. Because of that word, some will vehemently assert that everything I have just said is "false teaching," and thus "Al Maxey is a heretic who denies baptism."

I will no longer proclaim baptism as a sacrament, but rather as a required manifestation of one's faith.
        Forgiveness comes to those who turn from sin and in faith turn to the Lord.
        Such persons then demonstrate that inner faith and repentance by a number of visible acts
        that will occur throughout their lives (one of which is baptism).

Well, the Words of Scripture will be there to testify that you are an APISTOS who says "I will no longer comply." A Sacrament means that the ACT of sprinkling water SAVES an infant who cannot believe.  Al doesn't understand after all of that preaching that no one in Churches of Christ fails to put the emphasis on the faith which MUST be confessed that "Jesus is the Christ the Son of God."

Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
Romans 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Titus.gif

How is one baptized into the death of Jesus by faith and repentance? The way to receive that Grace which teach us is defined as:

Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us
        as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:
        that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,
        even so we also should walk in newness of life.

How does faith and repentance INSIDE constitute a LIKENESS of the work of Christ? Why is there so much shame?

Romans 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death,
        we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him,
        that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Romans 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Colossians 2:10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
Colossians 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands,
        in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
Which means:
Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism,
        wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God,
        who hath raised him from the dead.
Colossians 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh,
        hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us,
        which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
That's the meaning of Grace and Faith which is DEAD if it does not move:

Ephesians.Colossians.gif

Al Maxey has an agenda to prevent you from obeying: only those who have obeyed are servants of Christ.

Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey,
        his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Romans 6:17 But God be thanked,
        that ye were the servants of sin,

        but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
        Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Romans 6:18

Romans 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God,
        ye have your fruit unto holiness, [A holy spirit]
        and the end everlasting life.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death;
        but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Ephesians2.Rom6.gif

Al Maxey Eis: But, can one justify this view that forgiveness comes to those who by faith have turned to the Lord,
OR does the word "for" suggest it is baptism that brings the blessing?

I believe one can make a strong case, from the structure and grammar of the Greek, for the former.

But, Jesus and everyone else insist that there is no blessing until one has obeyed whatever he thinks he trusts.

Al Maxey Eis: And furthermore, if such an understanding of the text is at least a legitimate one textually and exegetically, then that fact would forever remove Acts 2:38 as a proof-text for baptismal remissionists.

But there is NO scholar understood any text in the Bible to agree with A.

Acts238ddLatin.gif

Al Maxey Eis: First, we need to realize that the word "for" in Acts 2:38 is not the actual word used in the Greek text (more about that word later). Nevertheless, even the English word "for" has quite a wide variety of meaning and usage.

That's true: the Bible was written in Greek and the word is EIS: eis means into or toward something.  We receive shots FOR immunity: not because of immunity. But eis can never be translated because of: if we are baptized we put on Christ: how does repentance do that?

Galatians 3:27 hosoi gar eis Khriston ebaptisthēte, Khriston enedusasthe:

One is never CLOTHED WITH Christ by faith or repentance.  One who has been baptized INTO Christ is one who is SAVED BY FAITH.  Faith or pistos always involved "compliance"before it has any value.

Jesus didn't leave it to clergy to use their imagination:

Al Maxey Eis: In Webster's New International Dictionary, for example, there are eleven definitions of the preposition "for" given, and baptismal remissionists have assumed that only one of those definitions can apply in this passage: that it denotes purpose, and signifies "in order to obtain." Although other legitimate definitions of "for" make equal sense, they are nevertheless discarded. Why? Because they don't support their theology!

Baptized.Converted.gif

Webster didn't write or translated the Bible: the Bible is understood by context and the way words were used when the text  WAS WRITTEN.

Acts 3:18 But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets,
        that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled.
Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted,
         that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
Acts 3:20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
Acts 3:21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things,
         which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.
Acts 3:22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren,
         like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.
Acts 3:23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul,
        which will not hear that prophet,
        shall be destroyed from among the people.
Acts 3:24 Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.
Acts 3:25 Ye are the children of the prophets,
        and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham,
         And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.
Acts 3:26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you,
        in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.

Al Maxey Eis: For example: "for" may also mean motive, thus signifying "because of." Would this definition of "for" in Acts 2:38 make sense? Would it be consistent with NT teaching? Of course it would. So, why is one chosen dogmatically over the other? I think we all know the answer to that. Is this other usage of "for" found in the NT writings?

Nope: Motive means that we are baptized BECAUSE we want to be free from sin.

Baptism and Remission James W. Willmarth. Baptist Quarterly july, 1877 296-231 299 Eis is often used to denote the purpose of actions. In this case the conception is that the act or acts move towards a certain resulin which they terminate or are intended to terminate. And as this “movement” is purposed and willed by the actor, whether the end in view is actually reached or not, eiV expresses the purpose of actions, or the motive by which men are moved to act, or from which they are urged or exhorted by others to act.

The motive has no value by itself.  The purpose is sending forth sins.

Al Maxey Eis: Yes, it is. In Matt. 3:11, just to give one instance, we find John the Baptist saying, "I baptize you with water for repentance." Okay, are they baptized "in order to obtain" repentance? That doesn't make sense. But, being baptized "because of" their repentance makes sense (and, by the way, this is the Greek preposition "eis" here, just as it is in Acts 2:38).

Matthew 3: 11 "I baptize you with water INTO repentance.
        But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry.
        He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

C. In other relations, where a person or thing is thought of as in a certain condition, situation, or relation,
John didn't baptize them before or in preparation for the day of Pentecost.

Al may not like it but John said that they  were BAPTIZED into a new REST or into a new relation.  Repentance in one's 'faith' has no value at all until it RESTS.  EIS is never and can never be used to mean BECAUSE OF in any recorded literature.

John said that Jesus was baptized so "that he might be revealed to Israel" (John 1:31). Note this says to "Israel" and not the world in general. He (Jesus) has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek. (Hebrews 6:20). "8 For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God's truth, to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs (Jews)". At first when Jesus came to be baptized "John forbad him" (Matthew 3:14). John's Baptism was "a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins." (Mark 1:4) and Jesus was "without sin" (Hebrews 4:15). But in the same way each individual Jew was being baptized to represent their commitment to become a member of the "kingdom of priests" (Exdous 19:6) of the coming Kingdom, Jesus was baptized as a "high priest".

Baptism and Remission James W. Willmarth. Baptist Quarterly july, 1877 296-231  Baptism and Remission James W. Willmarth. Baptist Quarterly july, 1877 296-231 [21] John also said (Matt. iii. 11), “I indeed baptize you in water unto (eis) repentance.” This has been misunderstood.

Eis does not here change its ground-meaning, is not equivalent to on account of. John’s Baptism looked to the future, to the near approach of Messiah, whose people must be prepared for him. Those baptized by John were indeed required to repent, but also to stand pledged unto repentance, thenceforward have a changed heart and life, so as to be in a state of readiness for Messiah’s coming. So Olshausen says that John’s Baptism “aimed at awakening repentance;” only his remark is too unqualified, present, as well as prospective repentance being required (Matt. iii. 2, 7, 8). This explains the phrase eiV metanoian. In harmony with this also, was John’s teaching of Faith. “John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on him who should come after him, that is, on Jesus.” (Acts xix. 4.) After Christ’s ascension we meet no more with the phrase baptized unto repentance, because Baptism now acknowledges the Messiah already come, and Faith and Repentance, as conditions of Remission, are conceived of as wholly in the present. But the phrase baptized unto remission remains—is used by Peter, Acts ii. 38. Those who render eiV in Matt. iii. 11 on account of, furnish a notable instance of missing an important idea through failure to understand the force of the Greek preposition.

Al Maxey Eis: "The plausibility of these alternative understandings of 'for' reduces the evidential value of Acts 2:38 for the doctrine of baptismal remission of sins" [E. Calvin Beisner, "Does Acts 2:38 Teach Baptismal Remission?," Christian Research Journal, vol. 28, no. 2].

The English word "for," however, is just a translation of the Greek preposition "eis," but, like the former, the latter also has a wide variety of meaning and usage, including the two mentioned above. "The illustrations of both usages are numerous in the NT and the Koine generally" [Dr. A. T. Robertson, Word Pictures in the New Testament, e-Sword]. Therefore, there are times when the Greek preposition eis (which appears some 1774 times in the NT writings) refers to purpose,

But, EIS can mean FOR but never BECAUSE

We are baptized FOR THE PURPOSE of Remission of sins: it would be silly to enact the death, burial and resurrection of Christ if one was ALREADY RESURRECTED.

John 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
John 10:12 But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not,
        seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep,
        and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep
John 10:13 The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.
I believe we will see more and more hireling shepherds FLEEING from the Word of Christ because it always has and always will bring reproach and not fame and fortune among the "big guns."

BECAUSE OF is another word and does not mean FOR. Why accuse Jesus Christ of being ignorant?

Ac.2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Ac.4:21 So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done.

Hoti (g3754) hot'-ee; neut. of 3748 as conj.; demonst. that (sometimes redundant); caus. because: - as concerning that, as though, because (that), for (that), how (that), (in) that, though, why.

Because: Ho ti A. like dioti, in indirect questions, for what, wherefore, as quickly as possible

Hoste II. ho te in that, because, 1.244; introducing the reason for making a statement or asking a question

Homer, Iliad [240] one and all, and on that day you will not be able to help them at all, for all your grief, when many shall fall dying before man-slaying Hector. But you will gnaw the heart within you, in anger that you did no honour to the best of the Achaeans.

Homer, Iliad 4. for the bane of Priam and his sons? Do thou as thou wilt; but be sure we other gods assent not all thereto. [30] Then, stirred to hot anger, [STATING WHY OR BECAUSE] spake to her Zeus, the cloud-gatherer:Strange queen, wherein do Priam and the sons of Priam work thee ills so many, that thou ragest unceasingly to lay waste the well-built citadel of Ilios? If thou wert to enter within the gates and the high walls,

Because Jesus defines how one becomes a disciple, how our sins are removed, we should understand "by Grace Through Faith" as defining our obedience and being baptized.

Al Maxey Eis: On the other hand, baptism for/eis (motive) the remission of sin, which is also a valid understanding of the phrase (and is the view taken by such Greek scholars as A. T. Robertson and J. R. Mantey, just to name a couple),
        IS consistent with the doctrine of salvation by grace through faith.
        We are washed clean of our sins by the precious blood of the Lamb,

But, not until we REQUEST IT by obedience in baptism.

Titus.2.Acts.2.gif

Peter who claimed eye and ear witness of Christ says that BAPTISM SAVES US.  That is the meaning of Grace through Faith. God always works through instrumental means. To deny that is to fight against God who demands obedience in His Son in baptism:  only AFTER His baptism was Jesus declared to be the Son of God.

Al Maxey Eis:  and we reflect the reality of that spiritual washing in the symbolic rite of baptism,
        which is a testimony and affirmation not only to ourselves,
        but also to others (much like our partaking of the elements of the Lord's Supper,
        by which we participate emblematically with the reality itself).

We partake of the bread and fruit of the vine in a LITERAL sense: the  purpose or the reason FOR doing that is to "show forth the death of Christ." We in no sense participate emblematically in EATING the flesh and DRINKING the blood of Christ.  If we do not OBEY that form of teaching Paul says that we do damage to our souls.

IF YOU SAY THAT CHRIST THE SPIRIT SAYS SOMETHING HE DID NOT SAY YOU DESPISE HIM OR BLASPHEME

Al Maxey Eis: Thus, we are baptized because of our forgiveness, not in order to obtain forgiveness.
                The latter elevates a sacrament; the former elevates the Savior!!

THAT IS BLASPHEMY BECAUSE CHRIST THE SPIRIT SAID JUST THE OPPOSITE.

2Thessalonians 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance
        on them that know not God,
        and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
To call Jesus Christ a Liar and to refuse to obey  Him when He said "he that believeth AND is baptized SHALL BE Saved"  and is a "believeth not" or an Apistos which says I WILL NOT OBEY and is called a traitor.

Al Maxey Eis: Baptism in water is "the visible seal of that remission" of our sins [Jamieson, Fausset and Brown, Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible, e-Sword].
"Water baptism is the external symbol by which those
        who believed the gospel,
        repented of their sins, and acknowledged Jesus as their Lord
        publicly bore witness to their new life" [The Expositor's Bible Commentary, vol. 9, p. 284].

38. Repent--The word denotes change of mind, and here includes the reception of the Gospel as the proper issue of that revolution of mind which they were then undergoing.  baptized . . . for the remission of sins--as the visible seal of that remission.

Baptism is the outward SEAL or SIGN visible proof that God is giving us A holy spirit or Go good conscience because BAPTISM SAVES US because we request.  God "knew" that Abraham had faith "when" he obeyed Himd.
The early Church believed that in baptism we are "born again"; we are regenerated; our sins are forgiven. Are those who say that baptism has no salvific value climing that the early Church had gone wrong so soon; that Jesus' broke his promise the lead the Church into all truth and protect it from error?

“’I have heard sir, said I [to the Shepherd], ‘from some teacher, that there is no other repentance except that which took place when we went down into the water and obtained the remission of our former sins.’ He said to me. ‘You have heard rightly, for so it is.’” The Shepherd 4:3:1 (AD 80)

A man is dead before he receivves the seal, he puts off death and receives life. The seal, therefore is water. The dead go down into the water and come out of it living The Shepherd 9:16:3 (AD 80)

This means that we go down into the water full of sins and foulness, and we come up, bearing fruit in our hearts, fear and hope in Jesus in the Spirit. Letter to Barnabus chap 11 (70-131 AD)

'And dipped himself,' says [the Scripture], 'seven times in Jordan.' It was not for nothing that Naaman of old, when suffering from leprosy, was purified upon his being baptised, but it served as an indication to us. For as we are lepers in sin, we are made clean, by means of the sacred water and the invocation of the Lord, from our old transgressions; being spiritually regenerated as new-born babes, even as the Lord has declared: 'Except a man be born again through water and the Spirit, he shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.'" Irenaeus, Fragment, 34 (A.D. 190).

Baptism is the only sign or SEAL which must be visible.  However, when we submit our bodies to be washed He forgives our sins on the inside.  However, no one ever called it JUST a sign or seal of being ALREADY saved. That says nothing about being saved by FAITH before WE participate in that Seal.
Alexander Campbell Calvin on Baptism: The first is, that it is proposed to us by the Lord as a symbol and token of purification; or, to express my meaning more fully, it resembles a legal instrument, properly attested, by which he assures us that all our sins are cancelled, effaced, and obliterated, so that they will never appear in his sight, or come into his remembrance, or be imputed to us:

FOR HE COMMANDS ALL WHO BELIEVE TO BE BAPTIZED FOR THE REMISSION OF THEIR SINS
Therefore, those who have imagined that baptism is nothing more than a mark or sign by which we profess our religion before men, as soldiers wear the insignia of their sovereign, as a mark of their profession, have not considered that which was the principal thing in baptism--
        which is, that we ought to receive it with this promise, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved."
"2. In this sense we are to understand what is said by Paul, that "Christ sanctifieth and cleanseth the church with the washing of the water by the word;" and in another place, that "according to his mercy he saved us by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost;"

and teaches us that by baptism Christ has made us partakers of his death, in order that we may be engrafted into it. And as the scion derives substance and nourishment from the root on which it is engrafted,
        so they who receive baptism with the faith with which they ought to receive it,
        truly experience the efficacy of Christ's death in the mortification of the flesh,
        and also the energy of his resurrection in the vivification of the Spirit. [ours]

Campbell says: He uses the same argument in another place--that we are circumcised, putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, after we have been buried with Christ in baptism; and in this sense, in the passage already quoted, he calls it the washing of regeneration and renewing.
        Thus we are promised, first, the gratuitous remission of sins and imputation of righteousness;
         and, secondly, the grace of the Holy Spirit to reform us to newness of life."

  We leave it to the good sense of the reader, whether John Calvin ought not to be called a Campbellite as well as the Apostle Peter. Fredericksburg, Va. October 14, 1833.
Al Maxey Eis: Most Christians recognize that "there is nothing in baptism itself that can wash away sin. That can be done only by the pardoning mercy of God through the atonement of Christ" [Albert Barnes, Notes on the Bible, e-Sword].

Jesus told Paul to be baptized to Wash Away His Sins: was Jesus a liar when He sent that message.  Why not let Jesus have His way and just PREACH it by READING it.

There is nothing in an average Jewish man which can remit sins. There is nothing about believing that can remit sins.  There is nothing about repenting which can save man. There is nothing about blood which can wash away our sins.  Baptism SAVES US because that is the Christ-chosen way to REQUEST A holy spirit or A good conscience.
2Thessalonians 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance
         on them that know not God,
        and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

2Thessalonians 1:9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord,
        and from the glory of his power;
2Thessalonians 1:10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints,
         and to be admired in all them that believe
        (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

1Peter 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God:
        and if it first begin at us,
        what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
1Peter 4:18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved,
        where shall the ungodly
and the sinner appear?
1Peter 4:19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God
        commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

The House of God is the Church of God in Christ
1Timothy 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how
        thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God,
        which is the church of the living God,
        the pillar and ground of the truth.
Hebrews 10:21 And having an high priest over the house of God;
Only those who were saved by being baptized were added to His Church by Christ.

Acts 2:40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying,
        Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized:
         and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Acts 2:43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
Acts 2:44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
Acts 2:45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
Acts 2:46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people.
         And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Only those have their spirits translated into the spiritual kingdom of Christ which does not come with RELIGIOUS OBSERVATIONS or religious services.

Colossians 1:12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness,
         and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
Colossians 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood,
        even the forgiveness of sins:
A person who "believeth not" that Jesus told the truth when He said that "He that believeth AND is baptized shall be saved" is said to be a traitor.
