Jubilee - Atonement - Restoration

"Whatever form its social ramifications may have taken, the jubilee was, and remained, a religious affair, for the atonement of sin (see Lev. XXV, 9)."

This is how a Catholic promotion of the little and great jubilee reads. It continues to show how the legal Hebrew ritual of Jubilee which ceased after the Captivity has been restored and made into a Christian festival.

Rubel Shelly Index of Sermons: father of the Nashvilee Movement

"In the Roman Catholic tradition, a Holy Year, or Jubilee is a great religious event. It is a year of forgiveness of sins and also the punishment due to sin (At first very severe),

it is a year of reconciliation between adversaries, of conversion and receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and consequently of solidarity, hope, justice, commitment to serve God with joy and in peace with our brothers and sisters. A Jubilee year is above all the year of Christ, who brings life and grace to humanity.

"The origin of the Christian Jubilee goes back to Bible times. The Law of Moses prescribed a special year for the Jewish people: "You shall hallow the fiftieth year and proclaim the liberty throughout the land, to all its inhabitants; it shall be a Jubilee for you when each of you shall return to his property and each of you shall return to his family. This fiftieth year is to be a jubilee year for you: you will not sow, you will not harvest the un-gathered corn, you will not gather the untrimmed vine. The jubilee is to be a holy thing to you, you will eat what comes from the fields." (The Book of Leviticus 25, 10-14) The trumpet with which this particular year was announced was a goat's horn called Yobel in Hebrew, and the origin of the word jubilee. The celebration of this year also included the restitution of land to the original owners, the remission of debts, the liberation of slaves and the land was left fallow.

"In the New Testament, Jesus presents himself as the One who brings the old Jubilee to completion, because he has come to "preach the year of the Lord's favour" (Isaiah 61: 1-2).

In its modern incarnation it is the product of LIBERATION Theology and FEMINIST Theology.

BUT: "The Church never stopped offering forgiveness of sins and punishment due to sins, through absolution and penance. This was practised in all the churches and sanctuaries in the world from the moment of their establishment; and even before this, in the catacombs and private houses where the cult was celebrated.

Borrowing Kung's words again: 'Even though it is not the kingdom of God which is to come, it is already under the reign of God which has begun'; the church anticipates the kingdom by being 'its voice, its announcer, its herald.'" (Shelly/Harris, Second Incarnation, p. 75)

THE CHRISTIAN JUBILEE

"Chrisitianity gave the hebrew jubilee a fuller, deeper meaning. The jubilee year is, in fact, a year of general pardon, of plenary indulgence the Holy Father grants to the faithful, when certain conditions have been fulfilled. [all FAMILIES have FATHERS]

Theologically speaking, it is based on Indulgences and on the power Holy Mother Church has to grant them. The jubilee brings a complete remission of the temporal punishment - instead of eternal damnation - due for those sins which have already been forgiven by the Sacrament of Confession. The indulgences which the Church grants are drawn from the inestimable treasure of the merits of Our Lady, the Angels and Saints, and the infinite merits of Jesus Christ.

The remission obtained during a Jubilee year is an absolution for the living,

a payment of ransom for the faithful departed.

The revival of the Jubilee is both Catholic and Mormon. The Jubilee ATONEMENT is quite identical to the Mormon Baptism for the Dead.

"From an historical perspective, this form of Indulgence, also known as a Holy Year, grew out of the strongly felt need for liberty and reconciliation, which were already present in the hebrew jubilee. To these, from the very earliest times, were added the performing of good works and almsgiving. So it was that the lapsed and the libellatici were reconciled with the Church, through the good works of a Martyr. Later on, one may witness the introduction, from the highest levels of the Church Herself, the commutation of the penance into other forms, which required some good "social" work, or the undertaking of a pilgrimage, etc.

The Great Jubilee was changed to once every twenty-five years and many lesser Jubilees were held locally.

However, Jesus came to fulfil all of the Old Covenant types such as Pentecost, Jubilee and the Atonement. We should never endanger ourselves by denying that He has cancelled the debts:

He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. Luke 4:16

The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: Luke 4:17

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, Luke 4:18

to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Luke 4:19

Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, Luke 4:20

and he began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." Luke 4:21

The article makes the point that you have to return to the designated site and fulfill the legal requirements of the Catholic Jubilee before you can gain forgiveness and atonement for your own sins. Just remember that:

Nothing is clearer in history than the adoption by successful rebels of the methods they were accustomed to condemn in the forces they deposed.
