The Holy Place

The Holy Place represents the church: there was no music and no praise service in the Holy Place which contained the candlestick representing the seven spirits of God in knowledge, the bread of life and the altar of incense. Everyone was silent during offering of prayers when the incense was burned. The synagogue was a place for study of the Bible as the source of LIGHT or seven spirits of God, fellowship and prayers. The church is most often defined in terms of a form of the word related to the SYNAGOGUE. As either a form of the ekklesia or synagogue people met to hear the evidence and make their own decisions. "There was NO praise service in the synagogue."

The prophecy of Jacob was that the tribe of Levi would be a curse and not a bless. I have reviewed the clear data which you can read by clicking here on King Solomon's Temple.  After the fall from grace by musical idolatry at Mount Sinai God turned them over to worship the starry host. This was the same Egyptian or Greek worship all of which came out of Babylon.  The Levites were OFFERED as a SACRIFICE which is directly connected to the Scape Goat which speakf of the sorcerers.  In Revelation the same SORCERERS or Scape Goats are the rhetoricians, singers and instrument player: they are OFFERED AS A SACRIFICE

See how the common people were STRANGERS and did not participate.

See Ben Sirach in Ecclesiasticus on purififying the temple

There was no music in the Most Holy Place where the believer as "priest" comes boldly before the throne of God--alone.

"At the dedication of the later edifice, the priests blew the trumpets at the same time that the Levites sang and played upon instruments of music,

so as 'to make one sound;' but it is evident that on that great occasion of rejoicing, what was aimed at

was not musical harmony, but a powerful crash of jubilant sound. We are shut up to the conclusion that

there was nothing in the tabernacle-worship, as ordered by Moses, which could be justly characterized as instrumental music." (George Girardeau, Instrumental Music, p. 29 - a Presbyterian).

The only "sounding" which is not called "music" was in connection with the sacrifice and burning of animals in connection with the Temple, king, officials and clergy. This instrumental noise was on the "far side" of both the Laver and the altar of sacrifice. To revert to instruments is to move back beyond the fulfillment of the type by Jesus Christ. To replace the "seven spirits of God" (Isaiah 11) bestowed as knowledge by the word as "Spirit and Life" (John 6:63), or to replace Paul's command to Teach and Admonish with Contemporary Christian Hymns (the blue book or red book) or to add "music" which was never used in spiritual worship, is to deliberately move the church as spiritual temple back beyond the laver of cleansing and the effect of the sacrifice of Christ.

Before moving on, we must mention John of Salisbury (1115-80), described as an ancestor of English Protestantism, which, by extension, makes him a forebear of American Protestantism as well.

"'Music defiles the services of religion; for the admiring simple souls of the congregation are of necessity depraved - in the very presence of the Lord, in the sacred recesses of the Sanctuary itself - by the riot of the wantoning voice, by its eager ostentation, and by its womanish affectations in the mincing of notes and sentences.'

"It should not escape the reader's notice that this. . . . comes from an author who was unquestionably an ancestor of English Protestantism. . . . by his concern at the exalted claims which the Papacy had assumed. . . . His defence of the rights of the common man are the political counterpart of his condemnation of musical elaboration which misleads and confuses the 'simple souls of the congregation'." [Routley, 101, citing John of Salisbury (c. 1115-80), "Polycraticus" I. 6.] Resource

The following illustrates the roles in the Temple as a summary of this article.

First, be aware that none of the "like the nation's" temples were used for worship of the people. Rather, the temples in paganism were "homes of the god" and therefore, the Jews were warned about such a temple that "God does not dwell in temples made by human hands."

This misunderstanding leads building the church much like the Temple and using it for "worship." However, the common Jews honored God "outside the camp" by living right and treating others right and by honoring Him as the Creator rather than men or objects as the creature.

Notice that the offering of animals with the shedding of bloood accompanied by up to 120 very loud trumpets, the king's instruments and the burning of the animal where "sounding" ceased when the offering ceased STOOD BETWEEN the ordinary members of the nation and the temple. Clergy serving to mediate the Word or prayers, the playing of instruments and singing songs IMPOSES itself between the worshiper and the Throne of Grace after Jesus died to OPEN the way for us.

The "people's congregation" was always put outside the gates when the sacrificial ritual began. This was true even in Herod's Temple.

Because the "liturgy area" in church architecture is called "the holy place," those repudiating the sacrifice of Christ plunge into the Holy Place with sermon, song and instrument. For this reason, the "pulpit" or "holy place" is normally reserved for those deemed "purified" to perform the liturgy or acts of worship FOR the people who are outside of the holy precincts as "audience." Thus, Judaism is restored and Christ is crucified all over again and again.

Paul uses the Greek Ekklesia to define the church as the listening-deliberating body of believers. That word is translated into a very misleading word: church.

However, when people gathered, the did not DO CHURCH but they DID SYNAGOGUE. Synagogue was a school of the Bible and for prayer. Even the temple had only one legitimate purpose: a place of prayer for my people.

How the PEOPLE' CONGREGATION was excluded during the sacrifice with a great sound. Alfred Edersheim outlines the proces.

Let's Run through the process to see that as in all "like the nations" temple ritual, the people did not participate. Under the Law of Moses the people -- as in all "like the nations" temples -- were excluded because of their musical idolatry at Mount Sinai.

Edersheim points out that the "stationary men" represented the 'congregation" but that the people were shut out of the sacrificial offering:

First: As the last great gate slowly moved on its hinges, the priests, on a signal given, blew three blasts on their silver trumpets,

summoning the Levites

and the 'representatives' of the people (the 'stationary men') to their duties, and announcing to the city that the morning sacrifice was about to be offered.

Second: As the president gave the word of command, which marked that 'the time of incense had come,' '

the whole multitude of the people without' withdrew from the inner court, and fell down before the Lord, spreading their hands * in silent prayer.

Third, The temple Music was blown and songs sung. This excluded all people not of the tribe of Levi. It also excluded all women.

Fourth: This closed the morning service. [Note: only representatives of the people were present. The common Jews did not participate in this temple service]

It was immediately followed by the sacrifices and offerings which private Israelites might have to bring, and which would occasionally continue till near the time for the evening service

Conclusion: the sacrificial worship was for the secular Temple-State and not for the congregation of Israel.

Hezekiah's Plague Stopping Ceremony For the Temple
There is always a BUT and the usual "crutch" for instrumental music as worship is 2 Chron 29:25-30, but this was for the purification of the Temple and nation. Hezekiah the king, the rulers of the city (29:20) and the clergy constituted the only "congregation." The whole affair was in the court and not in the Temple. Only during the burning of the goats did the Levites--ordained by the king and the Commanders of the Army--and the priests with the trumpets of God make a great crashing sound. Hezekiah reaches back about 328 years for a pattern for cleansing the temple in order to STOP A PLAGUE.

Blowing 120 trumpets, all of the instruments of David and the singers and instrumentalists "making one sound" (2Chr 5:13) of yelling or shouting can not be called "music."

The playing and sounding is not called "worship." Worship was bowing or fall on your face.

And when they had made an end of offering, the king and all that were present with him bowed themselves, and worshipped. 2 Chron 29:29

The singers continued to sing but the instruments and harps are silent.

This effected the "consecration" of the king, city officials, "buildings and grounds" and clergy before they could "come near" (29:31) and offer sacrifices--outside of the typical CHURCH or HOLY PLACE.

The implication is that they WERE NOT NEAR and could not offer sacrifices. God sent a plague on the nation and temple and this sacrifice was Hezekiah's bargain with God and was to clean up the NATION before worship could resume. No one ever "comes near" God using instruments in the Biblical record.

While hundreds of animals were sacrificed without instruments the end result was:

"So the service of the house of the Lord was set in order."

Passover was kept but no more instruments.

After the OFFICIAL worshipers were consecrated, the Holy Place (church) set in order and the Most Holy Place was made ready for God's Spirit and there was no music involved. There was never any "music" or even singing in the Holy Place or Most Holy Place.

When Christ came and was sacrificed with mocking, His blood was shed "outside the camp" and He took it into heaven itself for a one-time Atonement, believers can come boldly into the Holy Place (church) for study and prayer (as in the Synagogue). Jesus prescribed prayer in the "closet" and we can come boldly before the throne of grace to meet God alone and IN SPIRIT.

Unless you, your clergy, city officials and buildings and grounds are so polluted that God moves you back past the Sacrifice of Christ and the Laver of cleansing, don't plan to use Hezekiah for proof text for Spiritual worship. This would simply prove that "you are yet in your sins." For more on Hezekiah's Temple-Purging ritual as a Plague Stopping ceremony.

Therefore, we intend to show that there can be no role for music in church or in our prayer closet without invalidating Christ's procedure for sanctifying us BEFORE we come into a learning and prayer.

Paul agreed and said that both worship and prayer are IN THE SPIRIT. The offering of inarticulate vocal prayers in Corinth does not change the rule.

Background to the Like the Nation's Temple Animal Sacrifices for Dedication and Purification Ceremonies.

When Israel came out of Babylon God offered them The Book of the Covenant. This was a covenant of grace and sacrifices were voluntary as they had always been. The ten commandments had 70 laws as enabling legislation.

However, they rose up to play at Mount Sinai. This was the musical idolatry Israel had practiced in Egypt even as their ancestors had practiced in Babylon and their descendants would practice in Canaanite Baalism--right in the temple.

All not of the tribe of Levi lost the right to come boldly before the throne of Grace. They were all called STRANGERS. The Tabernacle which has a pattern in heaven had no musical Levites.

The priests mediated animal sacrifice and the Levites served the priests and not the congregation nor God.

Later when Israel rejected the rule of God and demanded a temple like the nations it was so that they could worship like the nations. Therefore, when looking at the entire Monarchy, the nation and the temple remember that it was a like the nation's temple symbolic of rejecting God and His Word and rule in the heart.

The animals were slaughtered outside of the holy place (church) and the most holy place (heaven).

During the sacrifices and burning the priests blew up to 120 trumpets and the Levites played the INSTRUMENTS OF DAVID for the civil state made noise but not music.

The priests washed their BODIES in "great SEA."
Only cleansed priests went into the holy place (church)

The seven-branched candlesticks (up to 10) represented the 7 spirits of KNOWLEDGE.
The Showbread represented the Bread of Life: the Word of Life.
The incense represented the prayers of the people--outside of the temple.

At this phase there was no need for "harps or trumpets" and indeed everyone was silenced. They "held" their harps and offered their spiritual incense.

All of the people offered their own prayers in absolute silence.

Yearly, the high priests went into the Most Holy Place with the blood of the atonement.

The Most Holy Place was dark and silent. Except for the bells in one account the priest did not speak but listened.

Jesus said that we must pray in the "closet" or pantry which would be dark and silent.

Worship and prayer according to Paul only occurs "in the spirit" or in the human mind. The Throne Room is where God reveals Himself to us alone.

How the PEOPLE lost their right to approach God without Clergy

John Chrysostom agrees to prove that God was not demonstrating His grace under the Law but was allowing them to play out their musical idolatry begun in Egypt and used at Mount Sinai to spit in the face of God:

"Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the Prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness? Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Kemphan (Saturn), figures which ye made to worship them:

"The cause of sacrifices! "And I will carry you away beyond Babylon." (v. 43.) Even the captivity, an impeachment of their wickedness! "But a Tabernacle," say you, "there was (the Tabernacle) `of Witness.'" (v. 44.) (Yes,) this is why it was: that they should have God for Witness: this was all. "According to the fashion," it says, "that was shown thee on the mount:"

Yet, because of their sin, the Tabernacle became like the nation's temple. The Levites would kill you if you tried to approach God.

Plato, in Phaedrus, comparing musical love to the inspired "madness" of religious prophets notes that the arts will not get you into the temple:

The third kind is the madness of those who are possessed by the Muses (Musical poets);

which taking hold of a delicate and virgin soul,
and there
inspiring frenzy,
awakens
lyrical and all other numbers;

with these adorning the myriad actions of ancient heroes for the instruction of posterity (prophecy)

But he who, having no touch of the Muses' madness in his soul, comes to the door and

thinks that he will get into the temple by the help of art-
he, I say, and his poetry are not admitted; the
sane man disappears and is nowhere when he enters into rivalry with the madman.

Later,

You say, "We want to be like the nations, like the peoples of the world, who serve wood and stone." But what you have in mind will never happen. Eze.20:32

Robert Jamieson notes that the "people" were excluded from the Tabernacle as they were later from the temple:

Numbers 2:47-54. But the Levites . . .were not numbered among them--They were obliged to keep a register of their own. They were consecrated to the priestly office,

which in all countries has been exempted customarily, and in Israel by the express authority of God, from military service.

The custody of the things devoted to the divine service was assigned to them so exclusively, that

"no stranger"--that is, no person, not even an Israelite of any other tribe, was allowed, under penalty of death, to approach these [Nu 16:40].

Hence they encamped round the tabernacle in order that there should be no manifestation of the divine displeasure among the people.

Thus the numbering of the people was subservient to the separation of the Levites from those Israelites who were fit for military service,

> and to the practical introduction of the law respecting the first-born,

> for whom the tribe of Levi became a substitute [Ex 13:2 Nu 3:12].

Numbers 3:5-10. Bring the tribe of Levi near--The Hebrew word "bring near" is a sacrificial term, denoting the presentation of an offering to God; and the use of the word, therefore,

in connection with the Levites, signifies that they were devoted as an offering to the sanctuary, no longer to be employed in any common offices.

They were subordinate to the priests, who alone enjoyed the privilege of entering the holy place;

[this means that they cannot accompany us into the Holy Place as we offer the sacrifice of our lips]

but they were employed in discharging many of the humbler duties which belonged to the sanctuary, as well as in various offices of great utility and importance to the religion and morals of the people. Commentary by ROBERT JAMIESON

Everyone not of the tribe of Levi (priests or Levites and others) was a stranger and no longer members of God's Covenant family:

To be a memorial unto the children of Israel, that no stranger, which is not of the seed of Aaron, come near to offer incense before the Lord; that he be not as Korah, and as his company: as the Lord said to him by the hand of Moses. Numbers 16:40

Numbers 18: 2-7. thy brethren also of the tribe of Levi--The departments of the sacred office, to be filled respectively by the priests and Levites, are here assigned to each.

To the priests was committed the charge of the sanctuary and the altar,

while the Levites were to take care of everything else about the tabernacle. The Levites were to attend the priests as servants--

bestowed on them as "gifts" to aid in the service of the tabernacle--

while the high and dignified office of the priesthood was a "service of gift."

"A stranger," that is, one, neither a priest nor a Levite, who should intrude into any departments of the sacred office, should incur the penalty of death. ROBERT JAMIESON

All of the older generation perished in the wilderness and Amos and Stephen note that they did not cease worshiping the starry host which was essentially Satan worship.

Later, in Canaan the elders "fired" God and demanded a king like the nations so that they could worship like the nations. God warned that the kings would lead them into destruction and they would perish like the nations:

Ben Sirach in Ecclesiasticus 48:

6. who brought kings down to destruction, and famous men from their beds;
7. who heard rebuke at Sinai and judgments of vengeance at Horeb;
8. who anointed kings to inflict retribution,

and prophets to succeed you.

O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help. Hosea 13:9

I will be thy king: where is any other that may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes? Hosea 13:10

I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath. Hosea 13:11

Therefore, David, the Monarchy, the Temple, Sacrifices and Musical "noise" are a PATTERN of trying to find God while rejecting His Word.

Table of Relationships

Animal sacrifices with loud instruments were not spiritual but they were symbolic of the sacrifice of Christ which was prophesied to be accompanied with musical mocking.

Therefore, the Temple was a "like the nation's temple" but it attempted to do by natural means what Christ would accomplish to create a SPIRITUAL TEMPLE which had a Holy Place where God dwells collectively in His body, the church. In addition, God dwells by faith in the individual member's own personal spirit which is the Most Holy place where we meet god: church is synagogue or school of the Bible, the human spirit is the PLACE where we worship in spirit and in truth.

The Incense was offered in silence. The "harps are held" and everyone is silent during personal prayer.

As Priests we come boldly before the Throne of God. Only one priest and God in the Throne Room of worship.

The Temple Rituals in all of the NATIONS was for the CIVIL STATE and therefore national. We might compare it to a national service in Washington Cathedral: I don't get to attend. Material temples were not for worship of the people in any of the nations.

The common people NEVER entered any of the holy precincts.

The animal sacrifice and the loud instrumental noise was OUTSIDE of the temple. Therefore, both were IN AND OF the world.

The musical Levites never played instruments or sang hymns inside of the Holy Place or "church."

The common Jews met in the synagogue for reading the Word and for prayer. There was NO PRAISE SERVICE IN THE SYNAGOGUE. The synagogue was a school of the Bible, prayer and decision making place.

The Ekklesia of the Greeks was a meeting to hear evidence and make decisions: there was never ANY PRAISE SERVICE IN THE EKKLESIA.

The church was a school of the Bible and for prayer quite identical to the synagogue with the BREAD now represented by the Word and the Lord's Supper proving that we are "giving heed" to Christ and not to a new clergy. The candlesticks was the seven spirits of God which in Isaiah 11 are all related to knowledge about God. Paul said that worship and prayer was IN THE SPIRIT.

For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven and giveth life unto the world. John 6:33

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 1 Peter 2:9

Spiritual discernment does not come until after baptism and we request or pray to God for a "clear conscience." That means a co-perception. Therefore, God meets the priest and reveals Himself only in the silence of the Most Holy Place--the spirit of man in communion with the Spirit God.

And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel. Exos 25:22

Spiritual things are spiritually discerned and NATURAL RELIGIONISTS need not apply.

God is not revealed in music, animal sacrifices or simplistic reading of the Word and prayer.

Conclusion: "music" is never a worship word in the entire Bible. In the sacrificial system it meant that the animals were being slaughtered and blood shed for the sins of the nation. To repeat it is to crucify Christ all over again and again even as we "sacrifice" His Light-giving seven spirits of knowledge.

In the mocking and triumphing over Jesus prophesied in Psalm 41, the music was that of the civil state treating Jesus as the "enemy" who was Beliar in the Dead Sea Scrolls or Beel-zebub as charged by the Jewish clergy.

That musical mocking happened just once as Jesus was tried and slain as a sacrifice.

The Laver stands between that sacrifice and our ability to enter into the Holy Place or church were the Spirit of Christ gives us life and light, He feeds us with the Bread of Life and we offer our own prayers and incense.

Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. Psa 141:2

Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. Psa 141:3

John notes that when you fall before the Lord, you hold your harps (keep silent) and offer your incense. In the Temple, the harpists would have been absolutely silenced before the offering of incense:

And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb,

having every one of them harps,
and golden vials full of odours,
which are the prayers of saints. Rev 5:8

Then, we are able to come boldly before the throne of Grace to meet God alone and in spirit.

If we reverse the process and go back INTO THE WORLD with music we place ourselves on the FAR SIDE of the Altar of sacrifice. Note the position of the instrumentalists in the figure above.

Musicians: in order to get to the door of the church you have to trust in the once-for all sacrificial holocaust of Jesus with musical mocking. You have to offer your body and "talent" on the altar to be "burned up" to enable you to worship again "in spirit" and "in truth" rather than with self-composed "praise hymns." You have to be washed in the laver from your presumptious sin of claiming to be the "mediator between the worshipers and God." Until then you are still strangers, outside the gate.

And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. Hebrews 9:22

It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. Hebrews 9:23

For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: Hebrews 9:24

Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; Hebrews 9:25

For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. Hebrews 9:26

To bring MUSIC into the Holy Place violates the type of the Tabernacle, Temple, Synagogue and Church. A Levitical musician would have been killed.

Trying to lead the worshipers into the Most Holy Place would have been arrogant, contemptuous and doubly worthy of death.

All MUSIC was of the world and intimately associated with all paganism which attempted to find the gods by natural means.

All MUSICAL instances in the Old Testament say, in effect, to God: "We will not listen to your word, we are not interested in Your LIGHT and WE will offer our music right in your face." So says all of the Bible, the secular literature and all of church history.

All of the Tabernacle and Temple types show that musical performers are on the far side of the Laver and even on the far side of the sacrifical altar of Christ.

However, consistent with the end-time Babylonian worship:

"In Assyrian times in northern Mesopotamian area (Assyria) the outer court familiar from Babylonian temples was lacking; the worshiper entered by a door in the side wall into the sanctuary where the idol was present and then turned to face the image. Pilasters or short walls on the side walls at that end framed the deity, which stood on a low dais. In Babylonian times, the entrance was frequently given flanking towers." (Pictorial Ency. of the Bible, Zondervan, p. 623).

When Judaism failed after the time of Christ, Jewish scholars looked backward to try to see where they failed. The Kabbalah agrees with the Bible that God never dwelled in a physical temple.
