Jesus said that worship is in THE NEW PLACE of the human SPIRIT which is the human MIND. Worship happens IN TRUTH according to Paul when we Teach that which has been taught or give heed to the inspired Word.

Great Themes of the Bible (#17-Praise and Thanksgiving)

Excuse Me! Musical worship teams are claimed to have power to move the worshiper into the presence of God. This is a brave claim that they are mediators between the paying audience and God! The presumed power to direct people into a worship experience is also a claim to be the mediators. Worship is not in the flesh but in the spirit. Therefore, no one can get into our spirit or mind (nous) as we meet God as pure or Holy Spirit in the holy place (naos).

Let's assume that you and some friends who have never heard about Jesus Christ are meeting in your home for coffee. A knock on the door and you are absolutely certain that the man who says that He is Jesus is really Jesus.

Now, what do you do? Oh! I know. You blow the pitchpipe and begin singing a sentimental, often erotic "praise song" which you have composed and which is supposed to work magic on God and the "audience."

No, you don't do that unless you are a blasphemer. What you do, is to "praise" Jesus by telling your friends who Jesus is and what He has done in words which He inspired as "the Spirit of Christ" in the Bible.

A "praise ritual" is crying "Lord, Lord" or "Ab, Ab" and try to "cast out demons" by what was known as "musical prophesying." If you do that then God is going to say: "I don't even know who you are."

Before we get to this conversion of church from "school of the Bible" to worshp center we need to understand a few things. The Britannica speaks of the most ancient view that priests and magicians make the same claim. This is why Jesus died to give each individual the right to "come boldly before the throne" without a human mediator:

"Magicians are often confused with priests, shamans, and prophets, mainly because many of these practitioners' activities include acts that are traditionally defined as "magical"; i.e., while essentially they are regarded as

intermediaries between men and gods or spirits,
in the sense of acting in a
direct personal relationship, some of their acts are also impersonal or "magical."
........... It is often, perhaps usually, impossible clearly to distinguish between priests and magicians;

Catholicism acknowledges restoring the priesthood and the Musical Levites and music "as worship" along with other elements from "paganism in general." Furthermore the eucharist was made into a magical ceremony as worship was removed from the personal spirit into set places at set times which outlawed that for which Jesus died:

"A priest + became the principal celebrant of the Eucharist. In this capacity, as well as by hearing confession and granting absolution, the priest eventually assumed the role of the church's chief representative of God to the people. The development of eucharistic theology resulted in a further emphasis of the priest's supernatural powers and qualities.

"The primary role of the priest is that of the ritual expert, the one who has a special and

sometimes secret knowledge of the techniques of worship, including incantations, prayers, sacrificial acts, songs, and other acts that are believed to bridge the separation between the divine or sacred and the profane realms.

The priest gains such knowledge through the institution known as the priesthood, which may be composed of various groups or guilds devoted to all or only a few aspects of the priestly craft +

However, "Among Protestants the doctrine of the priesthood of all believers (i.e., all believers have direct access to God) militates generally against strong anticlerical tendencies within their own ranks. In Islam there is, technically, no priesthood, though there are local spiritual and community leaders, such as the imam, the mullah, the mufti, the qadi, and others."

Separating "praise teams" from the "audience" is a rejection of Christ's repudiating of "the doctors of the Law, Pharisees and Scribes."

The claim of mediating powers in prayer, music or worship in general is cutting the church free from the sole mediating and salvatory work of Lord Jesus Christ Who had only One Incarnation. We have posted a review of Dallas Burdette which affirms the power of PRAISE to accomplish God's WORK.

The American Restoration Movement broke with organizational or institutional churches by depending upon Scripture. That being true, there was no room for local operators in any sense. Those once "pastors" became Evangelists or teachers and had no supernatural authority with God that all of the members did not have. We believe that Campbell was critical of the magicians and not evangelists.

While his comments may not represent the total movement, or necessarily the opinion he always held, the following quotation clearly shows that Alexander Campbell saw the need for a total restoration movement back to the Biblical model of the church. He was prophetic of the present apostasy in much of the Restoration Movement.

The Restoration Movement preachers saw themselves as evangelists. Even in a "located" sense they were ministers or servants of the flock. However, within the protestant churches the "preacher" was pastor or the head of the congregation who received his commission from denominational headquarters. Of those, Campbell demands:

"Give money to make poor pious youths learned clergy, or vain pretenders to erudition; and they pray that they may preach to you; yes, and pay them too. Was there ever such a craft as priestcraft? No, it is the craftiest of all crafts. It is so crafty that it obtains by its craft the means to make craftsmen, and then it makes the deluded support them!" (Campbell, Alexander, Christian Baptist, Dec. 1, 1823, Vol. 1, p. 91).

"Money is of vital consequence in the kingdom of the clergy. Without it a clergyman could not be made, nor a congregation supplied with a 'faithful pastor.' O Mammon, thou wonder-working god!" (Ibid., p. 124).

"'Will you,' said an honest inquirer, 'allow the clergy no salary at all? Will you not allow the poorer class of the clergy a decent little competence?' I replied I have no allowances to make. Let them have what the Lord has allowed them. 'How much is that?' said he, Just nothing at all, said I. A church constituted upon New Testament principles, having its own bishop or bishops, or, as sometimes called, elders, will not, and ought not to suffer them to be in want of any thing necessary, provided they labor in word and doctrine, and provided also, they are ensamples to the flock in industry, disinterestedness, humility, hospitality, and charity to the poor. Such bishops will now be esteemed very highly in love for their words sake; but especially those who, by their own hands, minister not only to their own wants, but also to the wants of their brethren." (Ibid, p. 140).

"That any man is to be paid at all for preaching, i.e. making sermons and pronouncing them; or that any man is to be hired for a stipulated sum to preach and pray, and expound scripture, by the day, month, or year, I believe to be a relic of popery." (Ibid., Vol. 3, p. 185).

"Our Elder labors with his own hands, that he may live honestly..." (Vol. 5, p. 163).

"... our elders labor... for their support, and are not burdensome to the church; but in case of need..." (Vol, 5, p. 95).

The present apostasy is too bad for honest evangelists who would love to preach the gospel.

The recent shift to "worship as the role of the church." However, the Bible--once held by the changers to be inspired insisted that:

Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; Eph 3:8

And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: Eph 3:9

To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, Eph 3:10

Of course, the ancient view that "praise" has some kind of mediating or magical power demands the use of both people (called "the idolatry of talent" by one writer) and certain instruments which "multiply" the power of the praise with God. The test of the effect is measured by how much excitement we create: some hurtful things can put a smile on your face.

The "familiar spirit" of the witch of Endor was an old water or wine skin. It was hollow and echoed like the booms and clangs of 1 Cor 13. The hucksters claimed that the voice from the instrument or the "idolatry of talent" was the voice of the gods and "bringing the worshipers into the presence of God."

Military, Animal Burning and Forced Labor "music."

Musical worship teams" including the Levitical Musical Worship teams were under the king and the commanders of the army:

David, together with the commanders of the army, set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals. Here is the list of the men who performed this service: 1 Chr.25:1

This was the "service" of a secular, military kingdom and was not worship in the true system:

Abodah (h5656) ab-o-daw'; or abowdah ab-o-daw'; from 5647; work of any kind: - act, bondage/ bondservant, effect, labour, ministering (-try), office, service (-ile, -itude), tillage, use, work, wrought

Abad (h5647) aw-bad'; a prim. root; to work (in any sense); by impl. to serve, till, (caus.) enslave, etc.: - be, keep in bondage, be bondmen, bond-service, compel, do, dress, ear, execute, / husbandman, keep, labour (-ing man), bring to pass, (cause to, make to) serve (-ing, self), (be, become) servant (-s), do (use) service, till (-er), transgress [from margin], (set a) work, be wrought, worshipper.

Of building the temple or overseeing the burning of thousands of animal carcasses the "musicians" blew dozens of trumpets during animal burning or they panicked the enemy into retreat or they drove even Israelites into building the Temple. The slave-driving musicians of the river boats were not there for pleasure or worship:

And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and other of the Levites, all that could skill of instruments of musick. 2 Chr 34:12

Nacach (h5329) naw-tsakh'; a prim. root; prop. to glitter from afar, i. e. to be eminent (as a superintendent, espec. of the Temple services and its music); also (as denom. from 5331), to be permanent: - excel, chief musician (singer), oversee (-r), set forward.

The African Pattern adapted to "praise singing."

Singing erotic praise songs and hand-clapping music is the tyrant's method of "getting more work" out of the slaves:

"The transfer of these West African tribal traditions to the slave fields, railways, and rivers of the southern U.S. was of advantage to oppressed and oppressor alike,
........... the slave obviously taking solace in the cultural memory of his own collective past,
........... ........... the slaveowner encouraging work songs in the
........... ........... same spirit as an infantry general might approve of military bands--
........... ........... for the stimulus they gave to work rate.

Many of the early examples of primitive vocal jazz relate closely to the labours being performed, and the content of the lyrics is a reminder that not only the cotton plantations but also the levees and railroads of the Deep South were created and maintained by slave labour. Click for More.

The "musicians" were sounders and were called overseers or excellers and even drove the slaves while building the Temple into which God would not go. Therefore, they were agents of the king as civil power and not of God.

The praise craze with or without instruments is asssuredly the sign of the end times when Jesus will cast many out of the church. The musicians and soothsayers or magicians will be in bed with one another:

Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea, and said: "With such violence the great city of Babylon will be thrown down, never to be found again. Revelation 18:21

The music of harpists and musicians (The 9 Muses in the classics, minstrels), flute players and trumpeters, will never be heard in you again. No workman (professionals or "technician" or craftsman) of any trade will ever be found in you again. The sound of a millstone will never be heard in you again. Revelation 18:22 ("Grinders" in Hebrew is equivalent to concubine.)

The 9 muses also honored Apollo or Abaddon or Apollyon at the Oracle at Delphi.

Jesus knew that the noisey flute players were magicians, soothsayers. They were trying to make contact with the demon of the dead girl to appease her. However, Jesus "cast them out more or lest violently."

When Jesus entered the ruler's house and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd, Mt.9:23
........... he said, "Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep." But they laughed at him Mt. 9:24

The clear implication was that, like harps in "heaven," once the people were dead it would be ok to play them because they had no earthly role to play because--

The light of a lamp (Word of Christ Mt. 5457) will never shine in you again. The voice of bridegroom (Jesus) and bride (young, veiled women) will never be heard in you again. Your merchants (traveling men, book sellers, attempting experience) were the world's great men (grandees). By your magic spell all the nations were led astray. Revelation 18:23

Led astray is from the Greek:

Planao (g4105) plan-ah'-o; from 4106; to (prop. cause to) roam (from safety, truth, or virtue): - go astray, deceive, err, seduce, wander, be out of the way.

Plane (g4106) plan'-ay; fem. of 4108 (as abstr.); obj. fraudulence; subj. a straying from orthodoxy or piety: - deceit, to deceive, delusion, error.

These were the "roving stars" or planets defined as clouds without water. In Jude, quoting the book of Enoch, these were the agents of Satan who caused the first fall outside the garden by mixed-sex choirs, instruments and homosexuality which is the nature of Lucifer.

Magic or sorcery was often a drug induced along with a magical incantation or a song. Today that could be perfumed men and women, incense or flowers:

Pharmakeia (g5331) far-mak-i'-ah; from 5332; medication ("pharmacy"), i.e. (by extens.) magic (lit. or fig.): - sorcery, witchcraft.

Pharmakeus (g5332) far-mak-yoos'; from pharmakoån , (a drug, i.e. spell- giving potion); a druggist ("pharmacist") or poisoner, i.e. (by extens.) a magician: - sorcerer

Music of all forms is now that secret drug inducer. Make you feel good? Of course. Morphine make you feel good when you are passing out from pain? You betcha. However, the hangover by Sunday night will allow you to attend services "disguised as empty pews" and practices in the marketplace will be condoned by forgiveness in the holy place.

True converts from magic or sorcery:

A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls (bibles) together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. Acts 19:19

Periergos (g4021) per-ee'-er-gos; from 4012 and 2041; working all around, i.e. officious (meddlesome, neut. plur. magic): - busybody, curious arts.

These books, like the magical books peddled in church these days, were worth 50,000 days work. Yet, true converts burned them and quit using other magical scrolls -- which at times claim equal authority with the Bible.

In the end, the Babylonian form of religion will so overwhelm the world that there will be only a tiny remnant: and that remnant persecuted. See a perfect description of the first Babylonian religion where Nimrod also carried along a band of female musicians. This was one way of keeping the other males out of the turf of the Alpha male.

Because David's prophesiers were not true prophets we must understand this civil-state connection to mean that their music and instruments were believed and claimed to have magical powers. Quite often the praise was not directed to God but to the king who was the "agent" of the gods.

All of the church historians of note saw the excitement effect created by musical as madness where anyone sexually or emotionally abnormal was believed to be "possessed by the gods." Just spinning around, getting dizzy and puking on the dance team proved that you were "inspired."

Arnobius writing (A.D. 297-303) Ridicules instrumental music in worship and Charismatic Worship as idolatrous.

In a footnote on the first page of Book I the editor notes that-- arnobius, instrumental music in worship,

The words insanir, m bacchari, refer to the appearance of the ancient seers when under the influence of the deity. The meaning is, that they make their asserverations with all the confidence of a seer when filled, as he pretended, with the influence of the god." (Arnibious, Ante-Nicene, VI, p. 413)

Why Slave-Driving (emotion-driven) Overseers must Excel in the Service.

He notes that it is childish that the gods of the pagans were not interested in heavenly things but with the courser things of earth. However, he is aware that the professional religionists devised the myths and fables to fool people. They felt this need because "we need to do something about the falling attendance."

"Nay, rather, to speak out more truly, the augurs, the dream interpreters, the soothsayers, the prophets, and the priestlings, ever vain, have devised these fables; for they,
........... fearing that their own arts be brought to nought, and
........... that they may extort but scanty contributions from the devotees, now few and infrequent,

whenever they have found you to be willing that their craft should come into disrepute,
........... cry aloud, the Gods are neglected, and
........... in the temples there is now a very thin attendance.

Former ceremonies are exposed to derision, and the
time-honoured rites of institutions once sacred have sunk before the superstitions of new religions.

And men--a senseless race--being unable, from their inborn blindness, to see even that which is placed in open light,
........... dare to assert in their frenzy
........... what you in your sane mind do not blush to believe.
........... (Arnobius Against the Heathen, Ante-Nicene Fathers, VI, p. 418)

Contra Rubel Shelly -- The Bible -- There is no command, example, necessary inference or scrap of evidence that praise, as a legalistic, works-oriented act, has any power to get one into the presence of God for some kind of spiritual experience.

Connected to the new praise rituals is a song book which inculcates charismatic and Catholic views.

One should not be surprised, nor even disturbed, because if we understand the end times of Revelation 18 this is a more certain sign that earthquakes.

The following is commentary on the views held by Rubel Shelly and others which are widely promoted among churches of Christ along with charismatic groups. Furthermore, these views have sowed bushels of discord and reaped wagon loads of conflict as the older members who bought the building are chased out by "children piping hoping to get Jesus to dance."

Therefore, we don't respond to the psychological pressure of being labeled "unloving" for placing the crooked stick of "superstitious praise" alongside the Biblical view of church as school: Christianity is not a religion but a discipline. Therefore, it has no acts of worship which produces magical effects with the worshipers or with God. So, don't pay for it.

Great Themes of the Bible (#17-Praise and Thanksgiving)

Rubel Shelly: "Praise the LORD. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever."

One of the five themes our church affirms in its Mission Statement is authentic and meaningful worship. Like Isaiah, we don't know who we are or what we should do until we see the Lord -- high and lifted up! (Isa. 6:1ff)

Throughout the Bible, the church fathers and all denomination founders knew who they were just by looking in the mirror or checking their birth certificate. They did go through the "finding themselves' imagined by moderns and post moderns. Furthermore, they all understood what to do simply by reading the word and meditating on it and confirming their lives to it.

Both authentic and meaningful worship takes place in the human spirit or mind as it gives heed to the Word of Christ which is Spirit and Life (John 6:63)

You cannot participage in that unless we are both speaking the word one to another and thereby praise God in the spirit.

Sermonizing by "taking liberties" may work but it does not teach the whole truth. Note what the Psalm really says:

PRAISE ye the Lord. O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. Psalm 106:1

Asks the Question: Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord? who can shew forth all his praise? Psalm 106:2

Gives the Answer: Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times. Psalm 106:3

First, note that the Psalmist is not defining a legalistic act of collective worship. We praise God whenever and only to the extent that we tell His story using His words.

Next, please do read the rest of Psalm 106. It tells the story of the fatal musical idolatry at Mount Sinai when Israel "rose up to play." It is not being unfair to say that Rubel Shelly claims the Exodus as "a pattern for Christian worship and community." The Bible does not agree.

A "saved" person does not lament their lostness:

Remember me, O Lord, with the favour that thou bearest unto thy people: O visit me with thy salvation; Psalm 106:4

That I may see the good of thy chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, that I may glory with thine inheritance. Psalm 106:5

We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly. Psalm 106:6

Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea. Psalm 106:7

God kept on "saving" Israel when they were lost and:

Then believed they his words; they sang his praise. Psalm 106:12
........... They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel: Psalm 106:13
........... But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert. Psalm 106:14
........... ........... And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul. Psalm 106:15

Since their singing was pagan, God abandoned them to paganism. Stephen warned:

Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness? Ac.7:42

If you want to rise above the sermonic apology for Israel condemned by Amos you must understand that the musical worship was the result of firing God and demanding a king like the nations so that they could worship like the nations. God promised that the kings would destroy Israel like the nations. They did and He did.

The event explains itself:

And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp. Exod 32:17

And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome; but the noise of them that sing do I hear. Exod 32:18

And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount. Exod 32:19

Rising up to play means musical idolatry.

I suppose that if you are to the point of hearing God's voice audibly you are ready to see Him literally as He is lifted up. But this is what you will say if you really do "break through" and experience God. God has been lifted up on the cross and the only "missison" the evangelist has is to "go preach" what has alread occurred.

And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not. Acts 28:24

And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word,
Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,
Acts 28:25

Saying, Go unto this people, and say,
        Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand;
and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:
Acts 28:26

For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed;
lest they should see with their eyes,
and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart,
and should be converted, and I should heal them. Acts 28:27

Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it. Acts 28:28

It is a dangerous commission to believe that we are all going to be God-ordained prophets and see the visions Isaiah saw. Now, Isaiah was a prophet commissioned by God. Unless we claim to be a prophet then we will never see God as Isaiah saw God. Stephen warned about the idolatry at Mount Sinai and explained the TRUE meaning of the temple and its worship and he saw the Lord sitting on a throne but these people ALWAYS die for their preaching:

IN the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Isaiah 6:1

Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. Isaiah 6: 2

And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. Isaiah 6: 3

And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. Isaiah 6: 4

Maybe I am missing something but I have never seen God on the throne nor seraphims with wings nor been overcome by smoke. Therefore, unless you have experienced this same thing you are not subject to the high restriction placed on "seeing God."

Oh, for the humility of an Isaiah who responded:

Then said I, Woe is me for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. Isaiah 6:5

So, if we have to follow Dr. Shelly and see God our first response will be to sit down and shut up: we will not display our talent.

If this happened in fact at this church: sermons will stop, feminine and effeminate musical worship teams will fall on their face and everyone will understand that no man's lips is capable of replacing the lips and Word of God.

Therefore, we are pretty sure that declaring the entire Bible "sifted" and then written based on the writer's personal agendas proves that we have not seen God.

And here is something else you will have as a charismatic experience which apparently is not part of the commission of one selected to be a charismatic evangelist by the "sovereign grace" of God:

Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. Isaiah 6:8

Don't we sing joyfully and musically "Lord send me" and just lie and lie and lie. Here is the Great Commission for those who have been giving charge by God and if they do not GO then they violate a direct command and therefore cannot love God.

But the message being sent by too many sermons is accurately prophesied by this "proof text" for having seen God on His throne:

And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Isaiah 6:9
........... Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes;
........... ........... lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears,
........... ........... and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. Isaiah 6:10

Jesus was hiding the Word from the clergy when He spoke in parables in Matthew 13. Therefore, to reject Christ's words being read by Him and by the early evangelists is a fatal error because this insists that WE ARE BLIND AND DEAF:

Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate, Isaiah 6:11

And the Lord have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land. Isaiah 6:12

But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof. Isaiah 6:13

What followed was the prophecy of Messiah:

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14

If you even pretend to see God on His throne this is the message He has for you.

Like most creedal or Mission Statements, the proof-text may be a supernatural sign that God has closed ears and eyes because I know of nothing more powerful than music to shut the minds and eyes of the spirit of mankind.

Those who use music as part of the magic or sorcery trying to get a message from God or by trying to speak to Him (1 Cor 14:2) know full well that they cannot survive as soothsayer under disguise as a priest without keeping the people lulled to sleep.

In a similar passage in Isaiah chapter 29, these people with be the magicians who believe that they are priests able to bring you into the presence of God speaks of the familiar spirits which was an old wine skin and has the same meaning as the "nebel" or harp and the hi-tek "sounding brass" of 1 Corinthians 13:

And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit (h178 = empty wineskin), out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust. Isaiah 29:4

Moreover the multitude of thy strangers (committing adultery) shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible (tyrants) ones shall be as chaff that passeth away: yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly. Isaiah 29:5

For the Lord hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered. Isaiah 29:10

And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed: Isaiah 29:11

J.H.Garrison: "There is God and Jesus: all the rest is opinion."

Rubel Shelly: "There are seven facts about Jesus: all the rest is muddled apostolic opinion." Eyes are closed and we are forced to go to the bookstore.

As music intruded into the civil worship of Israel only after the elders demanded that Samuel "set a king over us," modern music never intrudes until the church abandons itself to destruction and insists that you set a king over us. Thereafter, the magical, mystical claim to lead you into the presence of God is identified by Henry Banford Parkes as "the world's oldest profession" and his kingship will flounder if the music is allowed to cease - instrumental or A Cappella (meaning "after the Catholic church:)

Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: Isaiah 29:13

Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid. Isaiah 29:14

Rubel Shelly: When we experience the Lord in Spirit and truth, all else becomes clearer immediately.

That is why worship is such an important part of our life at Woodmont Hills. Worship is, in fact, not simply one aspect of our ministry but is at the heart of everything we are about as a church.

Nope! Jesus didn't say "experience the Lord in Spirit and in truth." That is what the pagans wanted to do. What Jesus said was that worship is not here and worship is not there. Worship defined by Jesus is in the mind:

Proskuneo (g4352) pros-koo-neh'-o; from 4314 and a prob. der. of 2965 (mean. to kiss, like a dog licking his master's hand); to fawn or crouch to, i.e. (lit. or fig.) prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore): - worship.

The word Paul gave to Timothy was to "give attendance" to the public reading of the Word and to doctrine and to exhortation: there is no command to turn "synagogue" or school into a pagan worship center. When you do it is certain that someone is "taking away the key to knowledge" and doing so with a high hand.

The Israelites at Gerezim made their system into "worship" and God condemned them for not giving heed to His Word. Giving attendance or giving heed to God through His Word was the only true worship "in spirit' or in the mind under all dispensations.

Now, try flapping your hands, wiring up a women's troop violating a direct command and do praise the Lords and fall on your face. It will happen. I promise you. However, singing "Lord, Lords" is musical prophesying and Jesus will say: "I don't even know who you are."

The wise men or the seers and soothsayers "experienced" when they had a vision or dream which was often a hallucination from too much wine where drunkeness was proof of the invasion of the gods.

Worship in "spirit" is internal -- in the mind. Worship in "truth" is learning and returning God's Word back to Him. In spirit does not mean "exhilarating" or enthusiastic (filled with the gods of madness - Philo). You can not perform worship for me. You cannot aid my worship. You cannot lead me into the presence of God. You cannot provide a platform upon which God lands. Both the Synagogue and the Church were more schools than worship parlors. Modern churches are more pagan temples (Asherah poles -- columns or steeples and all) than synagogues.

Rubel Shelly: In my opinion, the single most important thing to an authentically spiritual life is to learn how to praise God.

It connects us to the source of all things spiritual.

"Spiritual" does not happen in the body of flesh. There simply is nothing in the NT defined as worship in a spiritual sense except to give heed to Christ by giving heed to His words. Jesus said that all worship is "in spirit" or in the mind and when Paul speaks of worship or prayer he speaks of "in the spirit."

It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 1Co.15:44

Click to see how Dallas Burdette defines praise and even instrumental music in the same terms as ancient paganism. That is, music actually mediates all things.

See the truly superstitious nature of attempting to control, satisfy or appease the "gods" with praise singing as one of the oldest superstitions known to makind. It was also "facilitated" by the "world's oldest profession."

See how the PRAISE LEADER was an ancient "mediator" between the paying audience and the gods.

"Praise, in the prayer of primitive peoples, can be traced to salutations, such as in the prayer of the Hottentots (of South Africa) to the New Moon--"Welcome." Praise among most of the ancient peoples was expressed in the hymn, which was primarily a prayer of praise (whether ritual or personal) for the gift of the created world."

This means that praise is a prayer: we praise or give credit to someone whom we honor. We can't take a short course for learing private gratitude. And, lo, there is no "praise services" in a collective sense where one person leads the others in praise or prayer. Rather, this is truly a primitave or even pagan effort:

The Britannica notes of the praise song:+

"one of the most widely used poetic forms in Africa; a series of laudatory epithets applied to gods, men, animals, plants, and towns that capture the essence of the object being praised. Professional bards, who may be both praise singers to a chief and court historians of their tribe, chant praise songs such as these of the great Zulu chieftain Shaka:

He is Shaka the unshakeable,
Thunderer-while-sitting, son of Menzi.
He is the bird that preys on other birds,
            The battle-axe that excels
            over other battle-axes.
He is the long-strided pursuer, son of Ndaba,
Who pursued the sun and the moon.
He is the great hubbub like the rocks of
            Nkandla
Where elephants take shelter
When the heavens frown. . . .
(trans. by Ezekiel Mphahlele)

"Although he is expected to know all of the traditional phrases handed down by word of mouth in his tribe, the bard is also free to make additions to existing poems. Thus the praise songs of Shango, the Yoruba god of thunder and lightning, might contain a modern comparison of the god to the power and noise of a railway.

This is important because it is a well accepted fact that beginning with John Wesley the psalms were replaced with the product of "human inspiration." The form adapted for the "spiritual" is clearly a product of African and even voodoo influence.

In the concept of daring to dance with God made popular at the Nashville Jubilee, we note some other comments about the magical power of praise. If you are going to "connect to God" with any external method then this might appeal to you:

"In a report on a gathering called "Catch The Fire II" in Moscow, Bill Cassada reports that power was released through dancing in a circle at Rosa Church, the largest charismatic church in that city:

"We were absolutely connected with the Holy Spirit during this glorious time of adoration to our Lord. There were approximately 1000 people in attendance, and everyone was gloriously entered in. Over towards one side near the front,

Kathleen Balassi danced in a circle of praise with several of the youth from the St Louis team and Russian children as well. Near the end of the worship time, the worship team played a tune well-known to us, "The River is here.' It was not difficult to sing along with that one!

Soon the place was really hoppin' as a dance chain quickly formed (not hard to do here, Russians love to dance!) and 50-60 people were leapin' and dancin' to the music around the sanctuary. Also, all during worship,

See how Dallas Burdette explains the "emerging church of Christ" being promoted by some of Rubel Shelly's friends.

Jesus outlawed the professional praise leaders because they had taken away the key to knowledge. In agreement, Eliphaz Said:

Would a wise man answer with empty notions
or fill his belly with the hot east wind? Job 15:2

Would he argue with useless words,
with speeches that have no value?

But you even undermine piety
            and hinder devotion to God.

Your sin prompts your mouth;
you adopt the tongue of the crafty.

Your own mouth condemns you, not mine;
your own lips testify against you.

Are you the first man ever born?
Were you brought forth before the hills?

Do you listen in on God's council?
Do you limit wisdom to yourself?

What do you know that we do not know?
What insights do you have that we do not have?

The gray-haired and the aged are on our side,
men even older than your father.

Are God's consolations not enough for you,
            words spoken gently to you?

Why has your heart carried you away,
and why do your eyes flash,

so that you vent your rage against God
and pour out such words from your mouth?

What is man, that he could be pure,
or one born of woman, that he could be righteous?

If God places no trust in his holy ones,
if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes,

how much less man, who is vile and corrupt,
who drinks up evil like water! Job 15:2-16 (Read the entire chapter)

On the other hand, Elihu said:

For I am full of matter,
The spirit within me constraineth me.

Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent;
it is ready to burst like new wineskins.

I will speak, that I may be refreshed:
I will open my lips and answer.

Let me not, I pray you, accept any mans person,
neither let me give flattering titles unto man.

For I know not to give flattering titles;
in so doing my maker would soon take me away. Job 32:18-22

Paul said of singing which is not a "praise" service:

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Ephesians 5:18

Speaking (g2980 talk or preach) to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Ephesians 5:19

The word SPEAK is "the opposite of poetry or music." The Bible is not metrical in a "tuneful" sense and cannot be sung without rewriting it. And the direct command is to "sing that which is written" and "teach that which has been taught."

Jesus said:

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak (g2989) unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63

And Paul equated "spirit" to the "word" for teaching in the Ephesias 5:19 - Col. 3:16 parallel.

And Paul demanded even of himself as a supernaturally inspired apostle:

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 1 Corinthians 2:12

Receiving the spirit from God is that which gives knowledge from God. Jesus said that God is competent to provide His spirit through His words.

Which things also we speak (g2980), not in the words which mans wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 1 Corinthians 2:13

Paul preached what he demanded that the churches speak or preach to one another. The singing is in the heart.

The "praise songs" which man's wisdom "inspires" are specificially repudiated by a direct command and an approved example.

The only allowable songs are the ones taught by the Holy Spirit. That teaching and reminding was promised only to the apostle-prophets. In the Old Testament, Psalms were inspired by "the spirit of Christ" (1 Peter 1:11; Rev. 19:10).

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14

Paul insisted that the Corinthians were carnal or natural men:

AND I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 1 Cor 3:1

Nevertheless, he defined "speaking in tongues" in part as speaking, praying or singing out of their own spirit or mind.

For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. 1 Cor 14:2NIV

Indeed, many of the "praise songs" are not understood and Bruner in The Holy Spirit identifies most of them as "low-level glossalalia" or speaking in tongues.

And only the Apostles were taught and given a divine memory and the presence of Christ the Spirit to make them into the spiritual men delivering the inspired Word.

But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 1 Corinthians 2:15

For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:16

In this passage, the Mind of Christ is defined as The Holy Spirit.

Therefore the Mind of Christ is the Holy Spirit revealed in knowledge which no philosopher or song writer can grasp. Jesus said that "My words are spirit and Life" (John 6:63). Therefore, He said, it is not related to the flesh but to the Mind. Spiritual is Mental and you cannot "do" it with your body with or without help.

If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your 1Co.10:4

And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. 1Co. 9:11

Praising is telling what someone has done. It has absolutely no supernatural power. If enough praises "connected one to the source of all things spiritual" and connected us to God then this would make spirituality a product of human work. Couldn't we do without Jesus? If the team "leads us into the presence of God" then assuredly the claim is of "another Jesus" and not the one in the NT.

Here is what was taking place when the Israelites fell back into the musical worship of Osiris under the form of Apis the golden calf. This is what Moses wrote as a result of the musical idolatry at Mount Sinai.

For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden (in the nether world) from thee, neither is it far off. Deuteronomy 30:11

It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? Deuteronomy 30:12

Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? Deuteronomy 30:13

But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it. Deuteronomy 30:14

When we do anything which minimizes the power of the Word then we fall back into the terminal musical idolatry which doomed Israel at Mount Sinai.

Paul repeated this warning to the Romans in chapter 10 when he restricted TRUTH to that which had been written or preached. He also warned the Corinthians in chapter 10 not to worship demons and refers to the musical idolatry at Mount Sinai.

The musical idolaters at Mount Siniai tried to get a better deal straight from heaven than they had through his word.

"What is the meaning of the earth's roarings, the earthquakes, which we have been told occurred because the games had been celebrated careslssly, and their nature and circumstances had not been attended to, and yet, on their being celebrated afresh, and repeated with assidious care, the terrors of the gods were stilled, and they were recalled to care and friendship for men? How often, after that--

in obedience to the commands of the seers and the responses of the diviners--sacrifice has been offered, and

certain gods have been summoned from nations dwelling beyond the sea, and shrines erected to them, and certain images and statutes set on loftier pillars (pedestals) have fears of impending dangers been diverted." (Arnobius, Ante-Nicene Fathers, VI, p. 533)

Paul knew this and warned the Romans against the pagan forms of ascending to God or descending ceremonies:

For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. Romans 10:5

But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) Romans 10:6

But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; Romans 10:8

Rubel Shelly: It puts both our triumphs and failures, joys and sorrows into perspective. It sorts out the conflict all of us feel too often between the spiritual and the material, the things of eternity and the things of time.

Genuine praise and thanksgiving to God are a soul's orientation to him --

comparable to the pull of magnetic North on a compass needle when we get disoriented on life's way.

This sounds like contemplating the belly button or a mantra. It sounds like self-centerdness. It is to meet our needs so that worship, like all pagans who all used music, is a way to get goods from god. Paul warned that instead of following the revealed songs and sermons they were trying to speak to God (1Cor 14:2) which was just "speaking into the air" (14:9)

Thus Proclus in his Commentary on Euclid (ii) tells us that 'the Pole of the World is called by the Pythagoreans the Seal of Rhea' [ZOE] (Myst. Hymns, p. 63). Now the pole is the conductor of the vital and magnetic forces of the earth-envelope, and is, therefore, appropriately called by this name, as being the seal and signature of the vital forces of Divine Nature, whereby all diseases can be healed and all states of the soul vitalized. (G. R. S. Meade, The Orphic Pantheon)

XIV. Homer, Hymn to Rhea TO THE Mother OF THE GODS

I prithee, clear-voiced Muse, daughter of mighty Zeus, sing of the Mother of all gods and men.

She is well-pleased with the sound of rattles and of timbrels,
with the voice of
flutes and the outcry of wolves and bright-eyed lions, with echoing hills and wooded coombes.

And so hail to you in my song and to all goddesses as well!

"Now Rhea, as Ceres, in Hymn XIV, is called 'brass-sounding' and 'drum-beating'.
This has reference to the
mystical results of certain sounds and rhythm,

part and parcel of what the Hindus call Mantravidyâ. I remember reading a curious old French book in the Bibliothèque de la Ville of Clermont-Ferrand, one of the books confiscated from the Minime Monastery of the same town, at the time of the Revolution.

This work dealt with the magical properties of music, and described for what especial purposes the various instruments of music were used in the Temple-service of the Jews. Now Iamblichus (De Mysteries, III.ix) goes into the matter of the

so-called Corybantic and Bacchic 'frenzies' produced by musical instruments in the Mysteries of Ceres and Bacchus; and in his Life of Pythagoras (xxv) he, further, tells us that:

'The whole Pythagoric school went through a course of musical training, both in harmony and touch, whereby, by means of appropriate chants, they beneficially converted the dispositions of the soul to contrary emotions.

"For, before they retired to rest, they purified their minds of the [mental, says Quintilian] confusion and noises of the day, by certain songs and peculiar chants, and so prepared for themselves peaceful repose with either few or pleasant dreams. And again, when they rose from sleep, they freed themselves from drowsiness by songs of another character.

And sometimes by means of melodies without words they cured certain affections and diseases, and this they said was the real means of "charming".

And it is most probable that the word "charm" (epode) came into general use from them. It was thus, then, that Pythagoras established a most salutary system of

regenerating the morals by means of "music"

[Mantravidyâ].' (Op. cit. Kiessling's text, pp. 245, 246; see also Taylor, Iamblichus on the Mysteries, 2nd ed., pp. 130, 131, n.)

"Music and Mantras, therefore, were used by the Orphics
to
attract, or call down, the influence of the Mother of the Gods, who at the same time was the 'Store-house of Life', of Divine Nature.

Scholars of drama, ancient and modern, are quick to admit that when people -- especially males -- put on the masks of drama there is a real and present danger of gender-leakage or gender crossover. This, too, is consistent with the Dionysus tragedy. In the old form of Dionysus worship, the king doesn't recognize the god of wine as his cousin and:

"His initial sense of unfamiliarity gives way to invasive feelings of familiarity, of maddening closeness. Repulsion gives way to fatal attraction. The magnetic force of this attraction is the essence of Dionysos as the god of theatre, as the inner source of tragedy itself. It is the lure of tragedy that draws Pentheus into his own fatal ordeal. The tragic is what causes Pentheus to desire to be tragic.... The wonders of the god Dionysos pull people together to celebrate these wonders by competing with each other in song and dance.

"The speech of the herdsman says it all: "once upon a time, we humble herdsmen came together in the countryside, drawn by the wonders of the god to sing and dance in competition."

Rubel Shelly teaches that only the Core Gospel has survived and the writings of John and Peter have been sifted through philosophy to fit their own personal agenda. This is why superstitious and legalistic praise rituals replace the old Peter who had a better solution for getting straight with God.

Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things alway in remembrance. 2 Peter 1: 15

For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 2 Peter 1: 16

For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. 2 Peter 1: 17

And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. 2 Peter 1: 18

We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 2 Peter 1:19

Praise rituals just induce endorphins or "morphine within" which can be peddled as "the gods living inside." However, about as soon as the "praise ritual" is over we still have bad breath and problems of life which cannot be solved by working really hard on God.

This also sounds a lot like Don DeWelt. Praise is really seen as a work. If you praise God long enough and hard enough you can connect to all things spiritual.

The word "bless" like confess is made into an element of liturgy: "A new act of worship." However, we confess to those whom we offend and we praise those we admire or even those who offend us:

Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. Ro.12:14

There is no command, example, necessary inference or any hint that praise is an act of worship will connect you with the supernatural than saying "bless you."

And it came to pass, while he[Jesus] blessed (praise) them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. Luke 24:51

Now, Jesus didn't need this as a ritual in order to ascend. When the few disciples returned from Christ ascent:

And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen. Luke 24:53

Blessing God means to tell others:

Eulogeo (g2127) yoo-log-eh'-o; from a comp. of 2095 and 3056; to speak well of, i.e. (religiously) to bless (thank or invoke a benediction upon, prosper): - bless, praise.

Praising is derived from telling a story of actual events. If you get caught in doing "praise, praise, praises" Jesus will say: "I don't even know who you are."

Most of the new worship paradigm ridicules and repudiates and judges those who use the New Testament church for a "pattern" but totally construct a new "paradigm" from the Old Testament Judgmental songs. For instance, the Catholic church freely agrees that its instruments and choirs are a reconstruction of the Levitical Musicians. Also see Catholic Liturgical Singing. However, these musicians did not perform the worship for the people. The ministered to the priests in the sacrificial system and when they quit sacrificing and burning animals the Jews were smart enough to abandon instrumental music until A.D. 1815 in order to compete with the "Christians."

Preachers of this new order clearly see themselves as priests "parceling out" bits and pieces of the Word and standing between the Worshiper and Christ. Unfortunately, all of the evidence agrees that they might be witches or wolves.

Except by the "like the nations" temple as capital of a civil state which had repudiated God's Theocratic rule, there is no remote hint that the Jews gathered together for a "praise service." This would be as insulting to God as for a band of people to gather and sing "four-part Fanny" to praise Him. Or like honoring Robert Frost and reading your own silly poems to him.

Praise is simply me telling someone else what God has done and I have absolutely nothing else to go on but His Words which are free and undiluted (Isaiah 55) and for God's "water cycle" to work we had better return His Words to Him.

These songs were to be used as the "teaching song or sermon" and not fractured into bits as song and sermon fodder.

Rubel Shelly: From Psalms 106 and 107, John and I want both to affirm the value and meaning of worship to the Lord and help to direct you in an experience of it.

John York: You probably know that the compilers of the 150 psalms in our Bible arranged their materials into five sections. Psalm 106 closes Book Four of the Psalms, and Psalm 107 opens Book Five. Although we're not sure of the guiding theme or organizing principle they might have had in mind, praise and thanksgiving run through all the psalms. It is this common motif we are choosing to emphasize today.

See Jeff Walling in Stream Franklin and Psalms 107 rebuttal

Rather than the Psalms being a pattern for composing our own songs and sermons, the Psalms according to Paul to the Ephesians and Colossisians
IS the teaching resource:

PRAISE ye the Lord. O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. Psalm 106:1

Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord?
who can shew forth all his praise? Psalm 106:2

Who can utter

the mighty acts of the Lord?

who can shew forth (hear)

all his praise? Psalm 106:2

Our task is not to do "legalistic, praise rituals" but to tell the great deeds of God in the Word of God which Jesus defined as Spirit and Life: there is no spirit and life in our words or Jesus would not have died. Therefore,

Blessed are they that keep judgment (formal decree or law), and he that doeth righteousness at all times. Psalm 106:3

Remember Chapter 105 has just made this point that to praise God a "called" person must "go" and praise God to the Gentiles. Thereafter, he goes on and does not get a job as weekly praise leader preaching his own songs and sermons and thereby totally repudiate Lord Jesus Christ:

O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name:
make known his deeds among the people. Psalm 105:1

Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him:
talk ye of all his wondrous works. Psalm 105:2

Remember his marvellous works that he hath done; his wonders,
and the judgments of his mouth; Psalm 105:5

And Psalm 9:

I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart;
I will shew forth all thy marvellous works. Psalm 9:1

I will be glad and rejoice in thee:
I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High. Psalm 9:2

Praise in the sense of contemporary praise songs or instruments is self-evident proof that the theatrical performers are standing between God and the "worshipers."

"Sometimes religion produces suggestive rituals shared by a community to create an atmosphere useful for uplifting one's thoughts and coming to one's senses. There are those who cannot do without such forms of worship.

"Where, however, the form takes the place of meditation, or conditions it; where human words prevail over the Spirit.. then we are no longer in the presence of true religion.

The one who uses colours and sounds and forms and movements and other gifts of God under the illusion of creating a stairway to heaven out of his own resources can, even involuntarily and in good faith,

be raising an invisible barrier between humanity and God himself. (Davide Melodia, The Lord of Silence)

Dr. Rubel Shelly is not defining worship "in spirit" which is giving attendance to the reading of the word and meditating on it in the heart. Rather, he is defining the same kind of worship he defends at Mount Sinai. However, with all of the exhilarating, musical worship at Mount Sinai they COLORED MOLECH with the name of JEHOVAH. But contrary to Dr. Shelly's commending coloring the S.O.N. with the colors of the S.U.N. God didn't agree. He turned Israel over to worship the starry hosts defined by mediating priensts, burning babies (refusing to teach them), errecting Asherah poles and engaging in "the idolatry of talent."

Well, we do know that Psalms were the poetic version of the prose history and experiences of the Jews. They were to be used as we might use a history book of the United States to teach the history of the United States. These were never "sung" in our sense but recited to be heard, understood, remembered and obeyed. All of those musical notations were added to the work of the early poets.

Paul did not say: "derive a paradigm from the psalms" but to teach (preach) them one to another and the result will be singing and melody in the heart.

They could be repeated or chanted in the assembly of the elders or of the people as a way to honor God by warning people.

Rubel Shelly: A God to Praise

Walter Brueggemann provides one of the most helpful devices for appreciating

the pursuit of God through the Psalter.

But, Rubel Shelly is still defending the idolatry of talent and coloring it in the colors or giving it the false name of "worship." He has no trouble appealing to Machiavelli to explain why change agents have to be patient. But, as he got his "spiritual" warp of the exodus from wandering Jews, he gets most of his theology from reading philosophy. Others note what the "carried away" listener of sermons cannot grasp after being dissociated by music and the claim of ordination and training by God.

By following Brueggermann instead of Jesus we understand why "everyone is ok" and we dare not question any person's statement about anything spiritual. Why is this true to Brueggerman and Dr. Shelly? It is because while the entire Bible and commentators see the Exodus as the terminal sin for Israel and musical idolatry as the "because of transgression" which brought on the law, Dr. Shelly can "use liberties" and transmute the beginning of the end of Israel as "the pattern for Christian community and pattern."

However, WE are unloving to question that interpretation because "We CANNOT help but interpret the Biblical text so that our own "good" morality is in agreement."

"Perhaps the most startling conclusion that Brueggemann arrives at from this construct is that we cannot help but interpret the biblical texts so that our own "good" morality is in agreement with what the authors of the texts appear to be saying.

"Well, to make a long story short, the authors of the Bible had their own particular godly motives for bringing these texts before us; and the moral lessons aren't always written in front of us.

"Brueggemann explains: "These texts are not to be taken prescriptively, but are an offer into our zone of imagination. They invite us to reflect upon the exercise of social power and social leverage that makes some strong and some weak, some worthy and some undeserving."

Isn't the statement "not to be taken prescriptively" just as rigid as "ARE to be taken prescriptively?" Isn't the Bible given as a curriculum for church or synagogue as "school of the Bible?" However, unclear the text may be or how much it may disturb us, basic honesty demands that we leave the text just as it is because IT IS A LIE to claim that "you cannot pervert Paul's writings to your own destruction." Love means that I have to tell you that lies sell books.

"A postmodern climate recognizes that there is no given definition and that the rival claims must widely and uncritically be accepted as objectively real...

But: Jesus refused to accept the givens of his context and voiced a different reality that is borne on the countertext..."

So, that's a lie. Jesus rejected the claims of the Pharisees and the preacher class because they deliberately perverted the Word so that they could sell their own prayers and sermons. Can't remember Jesus ever debating the Word "as it has been written" because this would put Him in mortal conflict with the Spirit of Christ which Peter said inspired the prophets.

See how Rubel Shelly and John York "take liberties" with the Bible and teach those at Woodmont Hills to take their own liberties even with the gospel record of John. Unfortunately, the message seems to be that we can take the failures through musical idolatry and give then a Second Incarnation as "Christian Patternism."

I know that Walter Brueggemann sells books but he is not to be the object of praise.

And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices (plot or paradigm), and we will every one do the imagination (twisting) of his evil heart. Jeremiah 18:12

Therefore thus saith the Lord; Ask ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things: the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing. Jeremiah 18:13

Will a man leave the snow of Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold flowing waters that come from another place be forsaken? Jeremiah 18:14

Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up; Jeremiah 18:15

Webster: Pursue - to follow in order to overtake, capture, or kill. To try to find. To have as one's occupation.

Slow down, Lord! We are pursuing you.

God does not have to be pursued. Rather, He isn't lost and doesn't need to be chased down. The Psalms tell the poetic history of Israel and is prophetic of Jesus. However, Psalm 41 prophesied that Judas would try to "triumph over" Jesus where triumph overm means with "instruments and making a joyful noise to the Lord."

What he wants as a test of spirituality is this:

Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 2 Tim 2:22

What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; Romans 9:30

Paul had something to say to the pagans who made a great, works-effort to pursue and find the lost God:

God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Acts 17:24

Neither is worshipped with mens hands (that is music), as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; Acts 17:25

And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; Acts 17:26

That they should seek (worship) the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: Acts 17:27

For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. Acts 17:28

On the contrary, the Psalmist often tried to find the lost God or to awaken or arouse him:

O LORD, do not forsake me; be not far from me, O my God. Ps.38:21

Be not far from me, O God; come quickly, O my God, to help me. Ps.71:12

Dostoyevsky assures you that if you chase Him down He will look like a poor begger and never a priest. And when you find Him you may most likely kill Him. He will never look like a Sister Singer whom Dr. Shelly has given permission to violate the direct command of Paul and "preside over the flock" with a tune. She has left her virgin role and has become, as in all ancient pagan examples, the end-time holy whore.

Rubel Shelly: On his view of them, there are three great themes around which the poems and prayers in the Book of Psalms can be organized: there are songs of orientation, cries of disorientation, and poems of new orientation. In my terms for you, these correspond typically with times of naive trust in God, events that shake and/or shatter our innocence and simplicity, and eventual triumphs of faith in which we see the faithful workings of God through lenses of experience and maturity that ground us more firmly than ever before.

Psalm 106 is a microcosm of sorts for this total process of orientation, disorientation, and new orientation before Yahweh, the covenant-keeping God.

These are the three major steps of the Heglian dialectic: postmodernism. You disorient and reorient to a new paradigm:

"Most also call for dissociation as a preface to the religious experience. Dissociation is the loss of conscious awareness of the real world.

"Specifically, postmodern religionists call for people to leave all rational categories behind

before ascending to the godhead. Thus, they see one thing as the supreme barrier to deep religion: Reason, and its handmaiden, truth. The Death of Truth

All of the musical psalms except possibly Psalm 33 speaks judgmentally of people many urges God to stamp them out.

Psalm 106:22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and terrible things by the Red sea.

Psalm 106:23 Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.

Psalm 106:24 Yea, they despised the pleasant land, they believed not his word:
Psalm 106:25 But murmured in their tents, and hearkened not unto the voice of the Lord.
Psalm 106:26
Therefore he lifted up his hand against them, to overthrow them in the wilderness:

Psalm 106:27 To overthrow their seed also among the nations, and to scatter them in the lands.

Psalm 106:42 Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand.

Psalm 106:43 Many times did he deliver them; but they provoked him with their counsel, and were brought low for their iniquity.

Psalm 106:44 Nevertheless he regarded their affliction, when he heard their cry:
Psalm 106:45 And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercies.

Psalm 106:46 He made them also to be pitied of all those that carried them captives.

No, the captivity and death sentence was pronoucned because of musical "praise" at Mount Sinai. God does not allow them to return but to remain in captivity under less stress:

Psalm 106:47 Save us, O Lord our God,
and gather us from among the heathen,
to give thanks unto thy holy name, and to triumph in thy praise.
Psalm 106:48
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting:
and let all the people say,
        Amen. Praise ye the Lord.

The central event of the Exodus is that God offered Israel The Book of the Covenant, they agreed to it but then rose up to play in musical idolatry. "Because of THAT transgression" God gave them the book of the Law and sentenced them to captivity and death.

Israel's total disorientation was based on numerous statements that musical worship tells God: "We do not want to hear Your words."

Paul said in 2 Cor 3 that Israel became disoriented at Mount Sinai and they would never become oriented until "they turned to God."

Those used as Pattern for worship and community in Exodus in fact were Covenant Breaking people. God kept His covenant: but that covenant was "I have turned you over to worship the starry host" and they never deviated from that until the "kings set over them" were permitted by God to lead them into the worship they wanted but then into captivity and death.

No. Psalm 106 is a historical record of the failures of Israel. It means nothing more and nothing less. It is not a psychological coded message but a record of what happens when you break down the walls to paganism and try to "pursue God through the Psalter."

Rubel Shelly: It opens with a hymn of praise to the Lord, recounts a variety of disorienting times in Israel's history, and closes with a grand affirmation of faith. It begins with these words:
Praise the LORD.
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
his love endures forever.
Who can proclaim the mighty acts of the LORD
or fully declare his praise?
Blessed are they who maintain justice,
who constantly do what is right (Psa. 106:1-3).

For everything that eventually will be cited in this psalm, it is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving throughout. God is "good," and his "love" endures forever. These two words are linked in other places in the Psalter -- such as in the oft-quoted line "Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever" (23:6).

False Patternism:

Strange: this writer and all others I have checked see the Exodus as a "pattern for idolatry and loss of community" but John York and Rubel Shelly see it as a pattern for Christian worship and practice.

No wonder, it is so easy to adopt pagan forms of "worship" and the most ancient superstition that "praise" has power over the gods.

Reincarnating the Penalty phase:

Now, Psalm 106 speaks about the same event and the ultimate sentence to Babylon which God imposed at Mount Sinai along with being turned over to worship the STARS.

But John York and Rubel Shelly explains that God is faithful so "not to worry."

Psalm 106 ends with a prayer for salvation so that all of the people could give an amen to what the Psalmist expresses. However, this does not define a legalistic ritual "praise service" where praise "connects us to the source of all things spiritual."

No, it is Lord Jesus Christ who "leads you into the presence of God" and it is NOT the praise team. Lord Jesus Christ connects us to all things spiritual and NOT a legalistic, ritualistic praise service which violates Paul's direct comment to TEACH ONE ANOTHER with the poetic material with the "singing and melody" left in the heart which is the only PLACE where we meet God.

Paul prescribed a TEACHING program and not a SINGING HUMAN PRAISE SONGS ritual. This would then help define how we praise God throughout our week and not just a ritual which the Bible no where defines. Taitan rejecting human hymns wrote:

Rejecting the profane and wanton songs they heard around them,-"Satanic minstrelsies," as St. Chryosostom names them,-they beguiled their toils and soothed their sorrows with "Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs."

As St. Jerome relates, "You could not go into the field, but you might hear the ploughman's hallelujahs, the mower's hymns, and the vine-dresser's chant of the Psalms of David." See Cave's Primitive Christianity, p. 132.]

Part Two - Understanding Psalm 106 as worship to fulfill the teaching (preaching) demand of Paul in Ephesians 5 and Colossians 3. The commanded "act of worship" is teaching by speaking to one another; the resource is Psalms, hymns and spiritual song, and the result is melody in the heart as we return God's "water of the Word" back to Him in His "water cycle" after teaching one another (Isaiah 55).
