No one grasps that Paul commanded 1) Understand the Will of the Lord. 2. Then SPEAK that which is written for our learning (Romans 15). No Psalm or Mizmor was written for our SINGING in the modern meaning. There is never any congregational singing with or without instruments until after the reformation.

Music.  Cantillation signs guide the READER in applying a CHANT to  READINGS. This chant is technically regarded as a ritualized form of SPEECH intonation rather than as a musical exercise like the singing of metrical hymns: for this reason Jews always speak of saying or READING a passage rather than of singing it. (In Yiddish the word is leynen 'read', derived from Latin legere, giving rise to the Jewish English verb "to leyn".)

The Word, Logos or Regulative Principle outlaws personal opinions or personal experiences, rhetoric, selling the Word, singing, playing instruments or acting.  ALL of these are proven to silence the mouth of Jesus who is STILL the only Teacher when vocational elders as Pastor-Teachers, teach that which has been taught or that which is WRITTEN.  Anything else is defined as Sorcery or Prostitution by Corrupting the WORD or selling your own at Retail.

IT'S TRUE: JESUS NEVER POSTED A LAW THAT SAID "THOU SHALT NOT MUSICALLY MOCK ME"

One wonders who so many preachers get verbally violent just because Churches of Christ have never in recorded history used instrumental machines when they assembley for a Bible-Centered learning experience.

Therefore, we are authorized to add instrumental music? 

Al Maxey Premise: While Jack is preparing his defense of the "law of silence" as a hermeneutical tool for establishing "authority," let me throw a "monkey wrench" into the works. I believe the entire synagogue system, and the participation of our Lord within it, speaks powerfully to this matter. I would ask Jack (and others) to please consider carefully the following thoughts.
Exodus 18 defined non-mercinary elders to TEACH groups as small as 10 families who where quarantined to their small village and could not attend the Worship of the starry nost in Jerusalem.  The Spirit of Christ in the wilderness excluded vocal or instrumental rejoicing or Al Maxey's form of composing his own "scriptures."
2.09.13 Why do preachers work so hard proving their right to command, example and infer and deny God that power When there is so many direct commands, examples, inferences and those respecting God in church history insisting that God is the only Being with the authority to speak; Jesus proved Himself a Son by refusing to speak anything that God did not breath (Spirit) into Him as the Incarnate Logos.

The direct command is to PREACH the Word by READING the Word for comfort and doctrine. Therefore, the deep psychological motive might be to explain what they will say to God when they corrupted the word by selling their learning at wholesale.

Christ in Isaiah 57 commands the Law of Silence for both male and female other than teaching that which has been taught


The Ekklesia as A Church of Christ or Paul's use of SYNAGOGUE demanded the silencing of all of the performing arts so that they could "use one mind and one mouth to speak that which is written for our learning."

Isa 57:1 THE righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away,
        none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.

These monuments always show the Israelites as having straight noses, typical of Anglo Saxons. Other monuments, when they show Hittites or other Canaanite people, always show a hook nosed face.

Naturally such Canaanite faces would stand out in contrast to the Anglo Saxon, Israelite faces of Jerusalem. Even today these Canaanite faces stand out in Washington, D.C., London, New York, Los Angeles and other governmental or commercial cities. These are the people that can be recognized by the mere sight of their faces. These were the people that told the entire house of Israel to get out of Jerusalem, as these Canaanites were taking the land for themselves.

These infiltrating Canaanites weren't part of Yahweh's own vine, for they never were any part of true Israel. They had secured positions of wealth and power in Israel and Judah. They were corrupting the nation so that it was no longer bearing the sort of fruit, which Yahweh expected from His vine.

These Canaanite infiltrators are also the same people against whom Yahweh spoke in Isaiah 57:3-4. In the Hebrew He calls these Canaanites, "children of inborn transgression, and a false seed."

Before looking at lots of background, let me say that the Qahal, synagogue or church in the wilderness was defined for the general population who were NEVER to come near either the Tabernacle or Temple.  Both vocal and instrumental rejoicing were outlawed--if you need legalist to silence you in the presence of God's Word being taught "as it had been revealed" and never required a preacher:  The Holy Convocatio is h4744 Miqra which came to be each SABBATH day to read and rehearse the Word of God. The church was and is a school of the Bible: if Al Maxey wants to sing, clap, dance and play then I'm sure that a Jewish mother would hurt him real bad.

The church #1577 ekklesia - assembly, called out ones, set apart ones, congregation; in Hebrew this word is #6951 qahal (kahal) - a "synagogue" (E. W. Bullinger, Commentary on Revelation, p. 165-166), an assemblage, congregation, company from the root #6950 qahal meaning specifically a coming together, an assembling, a convocation, congregation; this word is used mostly for religious purposes (see William Wilson's Old Testament Word Studies, p. 92)

The LXX uses the word ekklesia to translate the Hebrew qahal. Qahal means to call, to assemble, and the noun form means a congregation or assembly. Solomon is called koheleth the Preacher, translated by the LXX ekklesiastes. The earliest known occurrence of the word is found in Job 30:28, ‘I cried in the congregation’. In the books of the law, qahal is rendered by the Greek word sunagoge, showing that the synagogue is the beginning of the New Testament church. Stephen in his speech which ended in his martyrdom referred to the history of Israel, and dwells for considerable length upon the one great leader Moses, saying in Acts 7:38:

‘This is he, that was in the CHURCH in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sinai’. The people of Israel, looked upon as ‘a called-out assembly’ were ‘the Church’ of that period.

WHAT IS DIRECTLY COMMANDED FOR THE CHURCH

Catholic Encyclopedia.

Every seven years, that is in the year of release, during the feast of Tabernacles, 
the Law was to be read before all the people according to the command found in Deut., xxxi, 10.

But this enactment was probably soon found to be impracticable;
        and thus the Jewish authorities arranged to read on every sabbath,
        commencing with the sabbath after the feast of Tabernacles in one year of release
        and ending with the feast of Tabernacles in the next year of release,
        a portion of the Law so calculated that the whole Pentateuch would be read through in seven years.

This would in some way the commandment be fulfilled. Some time later,
        the Jews of Palestine lengthened the sections for each sabbath
        in such a manner that he entire Law could be read in three years (Talm. Babyl. Megillah, 29b).

Miqra (h4744) mik-raw'; from 7121; something called out, i. e. a public meeting (the act, the persons, or the place); also a rehearsal: - assembly, calling, convocation, reading.

So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. Ne.8:8

And the Lord will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence. Is.4:5

WHAT IS DIRECTLY EXCLUDED FOR THE CHURCH

God only authorized the two silver trumpets: these were reserved for sending important signals.  However, many people had their own flutes or shofars, tambourines and sistrums: Miriam had here sistrum as a priestess or prophetess in Egypt.  The women especially were prone to parade around singing, clapping, dancing and beating on instruments.  Therefore, the command:

Num. 10:5 When ye blow an alarm, then the camps that lie on the east parts shall go forward.
Num. 10:6 When ye blow an alarm the second time, then the camps that lie on the south side shall take their journey: they shall blow an alarm for their journeys.

"Despite the differences between the Mosaic and the Egyptian cults, it can hardly be denied that Egyptian influence on Jewish musical practices were quite significant. They would stand to reason because of the high quality of egyptian cultic music.

The tambourine or timbrel, a hoop of bells over which a white skin was stretched, came from Egypt. Miriam used this instrument to accompany the singing and dancing on the shores of the Red Sea (Ex. 15).

The trumpet blown for decampment, at the gathering of the people and on different cultic occasions, especially during sacrifices (2 Chron. 30:21; 35:15; Num 10:2), was the signaling instrument of the Egyptian army.

The sistrum, according to 2 Sam 6:5, was used by the Israelites and bore the name mena'aneim. It was the same as the Egyptian kemkem which was employed in the cult of Isis.

The solemnity celebrated on the occasion of the transferring of the Ark to Sion, as well as the dances of the daughters of Israel at the annual feast of the Lord of Shiloh (Judg 21:21), were similar in thier musical embellishments to Egyptian customs in the liturgy and at parades. As Herodotus reports,

women sang the praises of Osiris while likenesses of the gods were born about and, during the festival of Diana at Bubastis,

choirs of men and women sang and danced to the beating of drums and the playing of flutes." (Quasten, Johannes, Music and Worship in Pagan and Christian Antiquity, p. 65)

However, for the Qahal or Church assembly which was only for teaching the Word, the triumph or alarm blowing of instruments and vocal rejoicing was outlawed.  First, this would signal an unlawful assembly and would be a warning. Secind, it would creates the alarm or sense of panic made by any loud vocal or instrumental noises. Thirdly, it would put the people in an aroused state making hearing and learning the Word impossible. Fouth, Calvin notes that no one should attend an assembly not called by God Himself.

The Israelites in Egypt were under the same pagan influences as in Greece and in Babylon to which they were doomed to return because of musical idolatry. The sentence was conditional and Moses warned the people in advance the signs that their second chance had been forfeited.

The Latin defines the synagogue or church in the wilderness as an ACADEMIA

Cynici
 
(Kunikoi). A name given to the followers of Antisthenes who founded a distinct school of philosophy at Athens about B.C. 380. Antisthenes had been a pupil of Socrates, and, like that philosopher, he taught that speculative philosophy was unprofitable, and should be supplanted by the practical ethical teaching whose end is a moral and tranquil life. In this respect the Cynic School was like the Stoic, but differed in defining virtue to be extreme simplicity in living.
 
This simplicity the followers of Antisthenes pushed so far as to violate the most elementary notions of cleanliness and even decency, and to plunge into the most frantic excesses of austerity, wearing filthy clothing, eating raw meat, and treating all who approached them with insulting rudeness.
 
Hence the name Kunikoi, "dog-like," was applied to them in its literal meaning, from their snarling insolence, though the name probably originated from the Gymnasium Cynosarges (q.v.), in which Antisthenes first taught. The most famous of the Cynics, Diogenes of Sinopé,
 
accepted the name Kuôn with a sort of pride, and was pleased to be styled "Diogenes the Dog," saying, however, that he did not, like other dogs, bite his enemies,
 
but only his friends and for their own good. Besides Antisthenes and Diogenes, the best known Cynics were Crates of Thebes ( Diog. Laert.vi. 86), Hipparchia and her brother Metrocles, Monimus of Syracuse, Menippus of Sinopé, whom Lucian describes as
 
"one of the ancient dogs who barks a great deal" (Bis Accus. 33); and at Rome, Demetrius, the friend of Seneca, Oenomaüs of Gadara, and Demonax of Cyprus. Cynicism became ultimately merged in Stoicism.
Cynics Diogenes, in particular, was referred to as the Dog.. a distinction he seems to have revelled in, stating that "other dogs bite their enemies, I bite my friends to save them."  Later Cynics also sought to turn the word to their advantage, as a later commentator explained:
        There are four reasons why the Cynics are so named. First because of the indifference of their way of life, for they make a cult of indifference and, like dogs, eat and make love in public, go barefoot, and sleep in tubs and at crossroads. The second reason is that the dog is a shameless animal, and they make a cult of shamelessness, not as being beneath modesty, but as superior to it. The third reason is that the dog is a good guard, and they guard the tenets of their philosophy. The fourth reason is that the dog is a discriminating animal which can distinguish between its friends and enemies. So do they recognize as friends those who are suited to philosophy, and receive them kindly, while those unfitted they drive away, like dogs, by barking at them.

He once masturbated in the Agora; when rebuked for doing so, he replied, "If only it was as easy to soothe my hunger by rubbing my belly."

Augustine stating that they had, "in violation of the modest instincts of men, boastfully proclaimed their unclean and shameless opinion, worthy indeed of dogs." De Civitate Dei 14.20.

This is in CONTRAST to the synagogues of the Cynics Paul identified as dogs identified by their howling style of "praise singing" seeking whom they might devour. They were Catamites or male prostitutes and Paul insisted that worship in the PLACE of the spirit would not give them a chance to get on the ministry team.  If you MARK the church by reading and discussing the Word of God then they have no place to "feather bed."

Blowing a horn would be like a church bell: the signal was simple and not musical in any sense.  However, the giddy people in the small tribal groups would be--like Miriam and the women--prone to break out in the "praise" singing, clapping and "making noise on istruments of delusion."

Plutarch's use of the word psallo is of great value and worth because he lived and wrote during the same period as did the Apostles (46-120A. D. ). His books, Parallel Lives of Illustrious Greeks and Romans and Moralia, are a great credit to Greek literature. Plutarch's use of psallo shows, without a doubt, that he knew nothing of any drastic change in the word which extracted the musical instrument from it s definition.

Three times in example 60 he uses a form of psallo. These have been translated: "plucked the strings, " "to pluck the strings, " and" pluck the strings," In example 61another form is translated "harpplayer, "

Aristotle: Melody Deceives: "Poets also make use of this in inventing words, as a melody "without strings" or "without the lyre"; for they employ epithets from negations, a course which is approved in proportional metaphors..

10.15.06 I have posted a rebuttal of Al Maxey's Shouting above the silence. He makes the strange assumption that the Old Testament does not command the Synagogue. Because Jesus READ the Bible in the synagogue Al thinks this refutes the "law of silence" and gives authority for adding instrumental music. He makes the same strage error or denying that one could eat bread during Passover. You KILL the Passover and EAT the passover and Al misses the WHOLE concept. Al Maxey is an elder and preacher at the Cuba Avenue Church of christ, Alamogordo, NM. He identifies the following absolute truth about the universal outlawing of music as worship as "Dorkism" or some such RACA word.

> God restated the Abrahamic Covenant to Israel at the foot of Mount Sinai. This had no mandatory sacrifices and no "church meetings." By no means did it have paid preachers. This was The Book of the Covenant and was a system of Grace. The first born males were the teachers.

The Bible associates "music" with Satan, prostitutes, children and those sacrificing TYPES of Lord Jesus Christ. Yet, no singer or musician or preacher could enter into the Holy Place as a destructive type of the body or church of Christ. "Musicians" were warriors and were used by the king and commanders of the army to give glory to the earthly kingdom, king and temple. This condemnation is universal in the Bible and in contemporaneous literature which always associates music and musicians with the homosexual priests of the "nations" pagan, perverted "worship" using "rituals."

ALL ASSEMBLIES OF MASS GROUPS CREATES SPIRITUAL ANXIETY. That is why Jesus died to remove both the BURDEN and the BURDEN LADERS. Jesus invited the BURDEN LADEN (also meaning "an extra tax") to come to HIM in twos and threes (Paul said, "outside the city" or camp) to "come learn of ME." Paul understood the assembly to be the synagogue: there were no praise services in the synagogues. Therefore, we can INFER that the Christian synagogues had no praise service. Why else would one HIRE OUT to be THE authorative teacher usurping the role of the Living Word in the Written Word? It is NOT POSSIBLE to be a Biblical Pharisee without being a PROFESSIONAL "Pharisee [preacher-prayer], Scribe [sermon and song writer] or Hypocrite. The Hypocrite was a SECTARIAN group of the Pharisees along with the Scribes. They were singers, musicians or actors whose "night job" among the Greeks was male or female prostitutes:

Threskia worship of ANY RITUAL is derived from the musical Orpheus. Therefore, James defines pure threskia not in terms of rituals or ACTS. On the other hand James shows that the SILENCE demanded for the synagogue or school of the bible would silence anyone who did not glorify God "with that which is written." Rhetoricians, sOPHISts (serpents), singers and musicians performed the role of sorcery. Because anything they ADDED to what is written would prove them a parasite:

OUTLAWING THE MUSIC JOHN CALLS SORCERY IN REVELATION 18

All musical and instrument terms speak of enchantment or sorcery: instruments are "machines for doing hard work." Most often the magicians or wizards sought to HEAR where God had not spoken. That is why God spoke INCLUSIVELY and EXCLUSIVELY. 

Dt 18:9 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.

The Hebrew for "serpent" in Genesis 3:1 nachash which means to hiss, mutter or whisper as do enchanters. It also means in a secondary sense to divine, or enchant or mesmerize, as a snake often does before catching its prey. It also has the meaning to shine or sparkle, like bronze or copper. Some Scriptures also tell us that Satan has an extremely attractive appearance (see e.g. 2 Cor. 11:3, 14), and this Hebrew word therefore also conveys the meaning to fascinated bewitch. (Cp. Deut. 18:10-14).

Dt 18:10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,

Divination:

David had these on his staff because he was abandoned to worship the starry host. "We even have a mention at a later date of a similar custom in connection with the cult in Jerusalem, where certain Levites, called me'oreim, 'AROUSERS,' sang (every morning?) this verse from "Ps 44:23: "Awake, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever." The Talmud tells us that John Hyrcanus suppressed the practice because it recalled too readily a pagan custom." (Roland de Vaux, p. 247).

The only way to MARK those trying to SPEAK where God has been SILENT is defined by God for all times. Please note that the Spirit OF Christ spoke only through the prophets. All of the prophets radically condemn the sacrificial system and the MUSIC of the national "worship of the starry host" God had abandoned Israel to BECAUSE of musical idolatry.

Deut 18:18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto the

        and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.

Jesus as "son" spoke only what He heard from the "father" who was within.  Classical trinitarians define God as Father of the thought. When He speaks his wordS are defined as His Son. Therefore, not even Jesus Christ spoke form SILENCE.

Deut 18:19 And it shall come to pass,
        that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

Deut 18:20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name,
        which I have not commanded him to speak,
        or that shall speak in the name of other gods,

Does Al Maxey think that he is a prophet? Superior to a prophet? Superior to Jesus Christ as the incarnated WORDS of the invisible, inaudible Deity?

Deut 18:21 And if thou say in thine heart,
        How shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken?


Note in reviewing Al Maxey's Shouting above the Silence, we noted that it was the Christian Church which defined the Law of Silence to mean that where God in Christ has not spoken then He gives ME the authority to decide for myself. After that we have a NEW Word of God. That means--based on Maxey's hostility--that YOU have no authority to hear a different message from Silence.  H. Leo Boles who marks the end of any effort to work together with the Disciples (Christian church) that it was not silence but the Baptist "missionary society" introduced in 1949 which shut down any effort to "fellowship."

Deut 18:22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord,
        if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken,
        but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

God is NEVER silent about what HE wants from us. People look for LOOPHOLES because they are LEGALISTS and are not happy with the LOUD VOICE of God.  Paul in silencing the diversities of the marketplace in Romans 14 defines the DIRECT COMMAND for the synagogue or ekklesia founded by Jesus Christ.

Rom 15:1 WE then that are strong
........... ought to bear the infirmities of the weak,
........... and not to please ourselves.

Rather than aggitate and drive away the infirm and OLD, the direct command is that as a SCHOOL of the Bible we are to BEAR the burdens of the weak.

The word PLEASE is to LIFT UP with AROUSAL SINGING to CARRY AWAY (heresy) people for THEIR OWN USES.

Rom 15:2 Let every one of us please his neighbour
........... for his good to edification.

The word means INSTRUCTION or EDUCATION. No one is "edified" by violating the direct command of Paul and the example of Jesus NOT to fall into the singing, dancing, sexaul ritual.

The DIRECT COMMAND is to teach our NEIGHBORS: not a FAMILY or COMMUNE.

For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Phil 3:20

Arousing people with musical PLEASURING is making the naked: the "minister" gets his kicks on route 666 when he sees the ooohing and awing and body pumping.

If you are not illiterate that is a LAW against having musical sex as the meaning of IMpure religion. If you NEED a direct command not to expose your nakedness then you MAY be the more legalistic.

Jesus founded an EKKLESIA or SYNAGOGUE or SCHOOL of the Bible to give us REST from the spiritual anxiety created by religious rituals: performing sex but claiming that the "spirits" are HOLY and blaspheming God.

Rom 15:4 For
........... whatsoever things were written aforetime
........... were written for our learning,
........... that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures
........... might have hope

Jesus Christ is the "another Comforter" and the ONLY ONE. Paul claims that he COMFORTS us through the Scriptures.

Rom 15:5 Now the God of patience and consolation
........... grant you to be likeminded one toward another
........... according to Christ Jesus:

ONLY THEN, can you be a "church of Christ" insteade of a COMMUNITY which always meant COMMUNE.

Rom 15:6 That ye may with

........... one mouth
........... glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

There is a direct command defining how we praise God: we speak the songs and sermons of God in Jesus Christ and the prophets.

Charismatic (perverted--sexual) performance rituals SOW DISCORD with a high hand because too many of the "worship masters" have made it perfectly clear that they would prefer that the old people GET OUT.

Rom 15:7 Wherefore receive ye one another,
........... as Christ also received us, to the glory of God.

This is also the only way Christ Himself can "sing to the Gentiles" as church is TEACHING body and NOT a pagan worship center.

Most PhDuhs will say that GOD NEVER SPOKE on the meaning: therefore WE can make up our own. Jesus said that speaking ON OUR OWN proves that we are sons of the Devil.

A TRUE FAST on the Sabbath OUTLAWED "speaking your own words" because synagogue was to READ or REHEARSE the Word of God JUST as Paul commanded to Timothy.

If you think that God is SILENT then read 2 Cor 3.  In all of his letters Paul defines the ekklesia or assembly similar to the synagogue which "had no praise service."

That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory,

........ by his spirit
........ in the inner man; Ephesians 3:16

That Christ may dwell
........ in your hearts by faith;
........ that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, Ephesians 3:17

O wretched man that I am who shall deliver me

All who "see godliness as a means of financial gain" see the school of Christ as OCCUPATION. There ARE no professions in the church: only ministers who forsake all and GO into the world are worthy of the "daily dole of food" of the temple servant. That is why the Greek world defined rhetoricians, sOPHISts (serpents), singers, musicians and 'technocrats' as SORCERERS and therefore the PARASITES. Parasites were named after the obsolete servants in sacrificial rituals.

"Nor are these Thracian orgies, from which the word Worship (threskia) is said to be derived; nor rites and mysteries of Orpheus, whom the Greeks admired so much for his wisdom that they devised for him a lyre which draws all things by its music. Nor the tortures of Mithras

The word in the Bible is:

Threskos (g2357) thrace'-kos; prob. from the base of 2360; ceremonious in worship (as demonstrative), i.e. pious: - religious.

"If any one perchance thinks that we are speaking calumnies, let him take the books of the Thracian soothsayer (Orpheus the inventor of musical soothsaying), which you speak of as of divine antiquity;

and he will find that we are neither cunningly inventing anything,
nor seeking means to bring the holiness of the gods into ridicule,
and doing so: for we shall bring forward the very verses which the son of Calliope uttered in the Greek,

and published abroad in his songs to the human race through out all all ages." (Arnobius Against the Heathen, Ante-Nicene, VI, p. 499).

Paul equated speaking in tongues to blowing of trumpets as unclear signals of warfare. He said that we do not make war with CARNAL WEAPONS which are CARNAL INSTRUMENTS:

Mention is often made of the singing and dancing of the Thracians, especially of a martial kind. Xenophon (Anab. vi. 1. § 5, seq.) gives an account of a dance and combat performed by some Thracians, to celebrate the conclusion of a peace between the remnant of the 10,000 Greeks and the Paphlagonians:

they danced fully armed to the music of the flute, jumping up nimbly to a considerable height,
and
fencing with their swords:

at last, one man struck another, to all appearance mortally and he fell as if [p. 1184] dead, though in reality not in the least injured, His antagonist then stripped off his armour, and went out singing the praises of Sitalces, while the other man was carried out like a corpse by his comrades (cf. Ib. vii. 3. § 32, seq.; Tac. Ann. iv. 47).

The primary "worship" word was conducting real or pretend warfare: the dueling harps:

Their music was rude and noisy. Strabo (x. p. 471) compares it to that of the Phrygians, whom, indeed, he regards as descended from the Thracians. Xenophon, in the passage last referred to,

says that they played on horns and on trumpets made of raw ox-hide.
Their worship of Dionysus and Cotytto was celebrated on mountain tops with loud instruments of music, shouting, and noises like the bellowing of cattle. (Strab. x. p. 470.)

Yet even lifeless things, either flute or harp, in producing a sound, if they do not produce a distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp? 1 Corinthians 14:7NAS

If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will any one know what is played? 1 Cor 14:7

Of Thracia:

And ever on the watch from their place of prospect with its fair haven, often from many had they taken away their sweet return, consuming them with the waste desire; and suddenly to the heroes, too,

they sent forth from their lips a lily-like voice (opa leirion). And they were already about to cast from the ship the hawesers to the shore,

They spoke a barbarian language, that is, one unintelligible to the Greeks, we must despair of being able to comprehend these accounts of the ancient Thracian minstrels, and of assigning them a place in the history of Grecian civilisation; since it is [p. 1181] manifest that at this early period, when there was scarcely any intercourse between different nations, or knowledge of foreign tongues,

poets who sang in an unintelligible language could not have had more influence on the mental development of the people than the twittering of birds.

If the Greek testimony associates music with warfare, sexuality and sorcery, and Paul uses the same language to define the SPEAKING in the tongues of Barbarians in Corinth, why isn't it LOGICAL to INFER that this supports the entire Biblical view and Secular writings about MUSIC AS WORSHIP?

If all of history associates RITUAL worship and a HIRED "interpreter of the gods" with men who are clearly types of SATAN, and Paul and Peter outlawing PRIVATE INTERPRETATION or further expounding, why is it a demonic INFERENCE to conclude that such "messengers of the gods" are now UNLAWFUL and eternal damaging to the SCHOOL OF CHRIST?

Paul says that a Jewish converts MUST worship in the PLACE of the spirit because OUTSIDE are dogs and sorcerers.

Ceremonial legalism speaks of EXTERNAL RITUALS where Pharisees change the Words of God and DO rituals such as "praying" or "preaching." God in Christ died to set us free: Paxil has "doing church ceremonies" as their best promoters because RELIGIONISTS cannot survive without MANUFACTURING "spiritual anxiety through religious rituals."

Al Maxey: While Jack is preparing his defense of the "law of silence" as a hermeneutical tool for establishing "authority," let me throw a "monkey wrench" into the works. I believe the entire synagogue system, and the participation of our Lord within it, speaks powerfully to this matter. I would ask Jack (and others) to please consider carefully the following thoughts.
The guilt clause insists on making the one shot in the heart explain that he is NOT guilty for his own murder. Therefore, the Grace Centered crew delight in making the victim into the attacker: Remember that Elijah the prophet of God fought the musical prophets with the WORD of God but the Jezebel crew labelled him The Troubler in Israel.

It is a fact that the defenders of instrumental music to worship a Spirit God invented the LAW OF SILENCE. Al's intention is to show that since there is no law against music then it is ok. It reads something like this:

God hath not said "thou shalt not play Rock and Roll as worship." Therefore, we are legalistically justified in playing Rock and Roll. This is such a powerful law that we can sow discord and steal the "church houses of widows."

Al wants Jack to justify why Al uses the LAW OF SILENCE and why he sows the discord. This old dodge was invented by Adam.

Al's logic lets him teach that those who have used the Biblical text to TEACH one another for 2,000 years actually SOW DISCORD by resisting the thief stealing their property. John Calvin notes that if the SIN of sowing discord to add instruments is old enough then it expires.

Thereafter, anyone who refuses to endorse and participate with those who have a panic feeling about holding onto their ill gotten freedom and property are guilty of sowing discord. To fall into the trap would be to endorse the evil which has not become less Biblical, divisive and Word-silencing over the years. The church buildings stolen and being stolen as we write are stolen property and it will never cease being stolen property in the hands of those who relay on GRACE to let them keep their stuff.

Al Maxey: There is no question but what the synagogue, and the activities associated with it, were an "innovation" or addition of men.

By-the-way, I'm using this term "innovation" in a neutral sense here -- I'm not suggesting it was either good or bad, merely that it was not "ordained of God" via the Law of Moses or the inspired OT documents.

No, that is not the truth. Al and all preachers need to become Old Testament literate.

We will show that the "synagogue" or assembly of the congregation was commanded, that the common people were to be gathered only for instruction and that God absolutely outlawed "sounding instruments and making a joyful noise before the Lord" when He was speaking. This was never music but the Israelite 'battle cry' and was not to be used against the people because it would absolutely destroy the purpose for the synagoguing: instruction from God. They used it on Jesus just as prophesied in Psalm 41.

Al Maxey: In other words, the Scriptures are completely "silent" with respect to this "synagogue system."

(Personally, I don't think there is anything at all wrong with the synagogue system, just for the record.)

No, that is not the truth. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew and Aramaic. Therefore, the READING of the word would often require someone OVERSEEING to make sure that the meaning was conveyed. Both ekklesia and synagogue are borrow words from the Greek. Therefore, if we don't see the word SYNAGOGUE too often it is because the Hebrew had many other words to describe an assembly. An assembly is a synagogue, ekklesia, church or under an oak tree where the document was posted by Aaron.

A synagogue is an ekklesia and they both simply mean ASSEMBLY. The word SYNAGOGUE is A GREEK WORD and we do not find it often in the HEBREW text. Make sense? However, in the Greek version the word is EKKLESIA. Jesus said to COME LEARN OF ME. When they assembled or synagogued in Acts 20:7 paul DID NOT preach but DIALOGED. The proper synagogue involved READING the word "as it has been taught" says Paul to the elders--not to the preachers. People prayed their own prayers except the formal READING of a prayer hymn.

The meaning of RESTORATION has T. Campbell defining CHURCH as a school of Christ and WORSHIP as reading and dialoging the WORD. Singing was PSALMS until A. Campbell and others published SONG BOOKS which was about like publishing a self-composed bible.

The word for synagogue in Psalm 74 would NOT be alone if all of the Old Testament was in GREEK.

This was the GATHERING in the wilderness where the ALARM or playing the trumpets and making a joyful noise was OUTLAWED because the assembly or synagogue was always for INSTRUCTION.

And that their children, which have not known any thing, may hear, and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over Jordan to possess it. Deut 31:13

This DEFINES the meaning of worship and BURNING ANIMALS was never defined as the SUNDAY SERVICE worship while the synagogue was like WEDNESDAY night. The SYNAGOGUE was always in UTTER OPPOSITION to the temple rituals which were LIKE THE NATIONS and not spiritual worship.

When "scholars" claim that the synagogue was invented in Babylon they have reference to the GREAT SYNAGOGUE convened in Babylon as well as to the more organized INSTITUTIONALIZED system of building houses for reading the Word, public prayer, higher education where the scholars could be found at the "building," the function of a bank and as a LAW COURT. By the time of Christ this included compulsory education beginning at about aged 5.

Paul never used the word CHURCH: he used the word ekklesia. When people GATHER or ASSEMBLY it was for GIVING HEED TO THE WORD and individual prayers. Singing UTTERLY FAILED if it did not mean to TEACH the inspired Biblical text. Even the Lord's Supper was to show forth or TEACH the death of Christ.

ANYTHING you add to that diminishes the role of the gathering (synagogue or ekklesia and NEVER church).

Isaiah 58 explains modern CHURCH and why it rarely works. To those DAILY SEEKING to know God's Ways, here was part of the DIRECT COMMAND:

If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking THINE OWN words: Isa 58:13

And Jesus would be proud that Al agrees with His endorsement of the teaching or rather reading of the Word but against any collections or prayer or "praise services." Rabbinic law actually made it illegal to do what Al and the preacher boys do each week.

"After each verse an Aramaic rendering was given by an interpreter, who in Palestine was bound NOT to use a written translation and not to allegorize" (The New Shaff-Herzog, Ency., p. 215).

Preaching, therefore was translating and explaining the text as, and when needed, it was being read "as it had been delivered to them." Even a boy student could READ the word which is Pauls unique worship word. However, the OVERSEER was not county boss; he stood over the reader to make sure that he did not make ANY mistake in "teaching the Word as it has been taught." This might have to be translated or discussed if the "students" or disciples which Jesus accepted had a question. That is why Paul said that the women should not ask questions during the reading.

Paul lines up against Al and crew by insisting that the Word made more sure by Jesus is not subject to "private interpretation." That means that it is a violation of a direct command of Scripture to sell yourself to "further expound" that which has been expounded.

John Calvin: But is it not altogether at variance with reason that the ploughing oxen should starve, and the lazy asses be fed? They will say, however, that they serve at the altar. I answer, that the priests under the law deserved maintenance, by ministering at an altar;

but that, as Paul declares, the case under the New Testament is different.

Al would not be happy about Jesus' comments about the professionals clustered around the synagogue trying to collect money from widows.

People always assuredly always worshiped "in spirit" but never with music.

One "advanced degreer" when asked about a course in Isaiah responded: "No, they didn't offer that when I went through." And I will bet that those who think that the Bible is silent have never read Amos or Job or Isaiah or Ezekiel, or about the king/qeen of Tyre and the king/queen of Babylon and the end-time king/queen Babylon Towers of Babylon where we first see the musical worship teams.

Robert Breckinridge (Presbyterian) notes that those urging to Judaize still aren't aware that the Jewish people "never" worshiped with singing accompanied by instrumental music! If your preacher doesn't get it then he just doesn't get it. Under the Law:

1. A system of types and ceremonies, whose great design was to foreshadow the pure and spiritual system which we possess.

2. A sacrificial system, specifically exact, and in a manner wrought into the heart of the system mentioned above, whose especial object it was to exhibit the atoning sacrifice of the Saviour of the world.

3. A system of moral instruction, by means of which the Jewish church was taught by the word and ordinances of God, as we are now taught the way of salvation.

Of these three systems, the second and third were social and public, exclusively.

The tabernacle first, and afterwards the temple, was the exclusive place at which the stated public sacrifices were offered up; each one in its turn the centre of the Jewish sacrificial system.

This means that if you use legalisms to restore the civil ceremony of the "like the nations" kingdoms, they you are absolutely required to return to Canaan, to Jerusalem, to the temple and employ blood-descendants of Levi and Aaron.
 
Al Maxey is gonna have to get his music out of the sacrificial system and this is gonna repudiate Jesus as the end of sacrifices and the end of the horrors masked by a loud noise--never called music.

Now, I assert that there is no evidence that the use of instrumental music formed any part of the public and stated worship of the Jews either in their temple or their synagogue worship;

The Sabbath was devoted to rest while "worship" in the temple sense ment "service or hard bondage." Therefore, the synagogue was a school of the Bible and not a worship center.

The very nature of the sacrificial system of the Jews, was incompatible with the stated use of music of any sort in direct connexion with it;

and it is positively certain that instruments of music formed no part of the divinely-appointed means, or utensils of the tabernacle, or temple service.
 
The Levitical, warrior musicians were under the king and commanders of the army. In actual use, the priests blew the trumpet as purely a signal to warn people to bow or fall on their face. The warrior musicians were part of the civil ceremony and created a great crashing sound during the burning which was not in the holy place (church) or most holy place (God's presence).
 
Blowing 120 trumpets at one time with tuned shofars was never called music and the "musicians" were slave drivers.
The question to ask is: does the synagogue do something which is not authorized in the Biblical commands? For instance, is teaching the Word unlawful? Is teaching the Word of God divisive: will you "sow discord and drive away the brethren if you teach the Bible:? The answer is, No. Therefore, there is no agrument from silence about the synagogue.

Another question to ask: "Is it really true that God did not authorize the synagogue?" The answer is, No. While the word is translated "synagogue" in the Psalms as the "places where Moses is read" it is most often just translated as "gathering" or assembly as those in the church are most often said to "gather" rather than to "church."

God instructed that His Word be "preached" which means that it was "read." Three million people never gathered for any purpose except as part of the Jubilee cycle. Normally, the idea was for the tribal elders to LISTEN to Moses RECITE the words. They returned to their own tribes and subtribes to orally RECITE exactly what had been taught.

If God commanded that the Word be READ then no authority is needed to READ the Word. Only a legalist would suggest that you need a direct command (patternism) to tell people WHERE it was read.

For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day. Acts 15:21

Paul used the word:

Sunagoge (g4864) soon-ag-o-gay'; from (the redupl. form of) 4863; an assemblage of persons; spec. a Jewish "synagogue" (the meeting or the place); by anal. a Christian church: - assembly, congregation, synagogue.

During the festivals the first day and seventh day was often free of animal sacrifices. The REST was so that they could hold a holy convocation. This word means to READ or REHEARSE the Word.

This was done in the Qahal. Therefore, the synagogue was the Qahal which was the ekklesia or church in the wilderness.

The Sabbath does not mean WORSHIP in the Greek pagan sense of "threskia." This was the worship invented by Orpheus the "Thracian." Men and "musical worship teams" went out to the shrines and performed their perverted rituals. It is MARKED by the fact that it had rituals or ACTS which the "preachers" meaning sorcerers (rhetoricians, sOPHISts or serpents, singers and musicians, jesters and clowns."

The Sabbath means REST and millions of people never went to Jerusalem which was the site of the civil-military shrine. The idea was that priests went out with parts of the Scripture into the cities where some were positioned along with the Levites as civil authorities.

"Worship" meant STUDYING THE LAW and prayer. Jesus commanded us to make DISsCIPLES which means STUDENTS. When we assemble (synagogue) Jesus says "come LEARN of me." There is a total disconnect between the scholl of the Bible and of Christ and modern temples of CIRCE (church) the holy whore where "she" feeds the converts with "dung patty cakes" and performs the legalistic patternism of laying by in store for the rick rather than laying BY YOURSELVES.

Neither the seventh day or first day were given for WORSHIP. Worship in the threskia form which involves clergy and rituals is pagan. To quarantine His people God gave a day or days or REST. This was to keep the burdens and burden laders off our backs.

In the FIRST DAY ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. Lev 23:7

But ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord seven days: in the SEVENTH DAY is an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. Lev 23:8

A holy Convocation is an assembly in community groups:

Miqra (h4744) mik-raw'; from 7121; something called out, i. e. a public meeting (the act, the persons, or the place); also a rehearsal: - assembly, calling, convocation, READING.

A holy convocation (Paul repeated this) was for READING of the Word. A MEETING does not authorize a CULT STRUCTURE of "ministries" to regulate people's lives ALL WEEK LONG. h7121 is like EKKLESIA in that it was a called out assembly to "give heed to the public reading of the Word."

The earliest form of PREACHING which was condemned as heresy was a professional TELLING BIBLE STORIES in his own words!

So they READ in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the READING. Ne.8:8

Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the Lord seven days: on the FIRST DAY shall be a SABBATH, and on the EIGHTH DAY shall be a sabbath. Le.23:39

The outlawed Servile is:

Apollo, Abaddon or Apollyon in the book of revelation unleashes the LOCUSTS or muses or musical performers. In Revelation 18:22 we can see what Satan and his musical agents have destroyed the church even as God gave the king and his assumed clergy team to carry out the death sentence imposed because of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai.

Both the First and Seventh were for a holy convocation for the feasts. This was also the rule for the Sabbath which means REST from the bondage of the clergy:

> Servile "worship" or "service" was keeping in bondage.

The point of this passage is that it uses a word which has many meanings. A feast is one meaning,

Any time or appointed place of meeting or the congregation was the synagogue:

And Aaron and his sons shall eat the flesh of the ram, and the bread that is in the basket by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. Psalm 29:32

The word almost always means "congregation" or the place. The LXX uses ekklesia for the assembly which is quite identical to the Greek word synagogue.

No one ever divided the synagogue by adding a "praise service" or by adding instrumental music. It simply would not have occurred to any faithful Jew to think of speaking the Word of God with the sister singers or band playing.

And not even the most commercial, money-grubbing Pharisee would add music. In fact, both the Essenes and Pharisees repudiatedthe Temple system and the Essenes in the Dead Sea Scrolls show that music was an attack upon the enemy and would be an attack upon Messiah.

Al Maxey: The question to be posed, therefore, to those who view the silence of Scripture as prohibitive is this:

Does the synagogue system violate this "law of silence?" Is it therefore "unauthorized?" If it IS "unauthorized" (prohibited by virtue of this "law of silence"), is any participation in this synagogue system wrongful or sinful? Can one participate in that which is "prohibited" and "unauthorized" and not be guilty of sin? This may seem like a rather ridiculous question to some, but it actually goes to the very heart of this "law of silence" principle so firmly proclaimed by some of our brethren, and I believe it exposes the inconsistency of it.

No, that is not the truth. The Word is not silent so Al cannot use the Law of Silence to add instruments based on his false teaching that the Bible does not authorize the synagoguing function.

We showed the reading public where God authorized the SYNAGOGUE (translated Ekklesia) and that God OUTLAWED playing loud instruments and "making a joyful noise before the Lord" during the ASSEMBLY which was ONLY for instruction.

The "law of silence" is used only by the instrumentalists who say: "But God did not say, 'Thou shalt not play instruments,' therefore we are authorized by this Law of Silence to add that which God was silent about."

Non-instrumentalists use the direct commands of Paul to "teach" with the singing and melody in the heart, the entire Old Testament history associating instruments with refusing to listen to His commands, the common parctice of paganism and the total testimony of the church Fathers, the founders of denominations and the huge number of people throughout the world who wouldn't try to worship a Spirit God with a machine, or teachto the beat of a drum. Not legalistic just minimal common sense.

The statement of absolute certainty by Al Maxey should be a question directed to Bible students:

"What, if any, was the authority for the Synagogue?" In some cases the false belief that the Synagogue which was unauthorized seems to be a "law of silence" which permits the "living church" to change with the demands of society and add music which is not a Biblical worship word. 

Al's implication is that if the Jews got away with violating the law doesn't God's grace allow us to do so? But, it is a fact that neither instruments or a PRAISE SERVICE was EVER in the commanded Qahal (Ekklesia). God OUTLAWED them as if one has to PROHIBIT modern PAGAN MUSIC when Jesus Christ--our ONLY Teacher--is trying to speak. Once God OUTLAWED music from the SCHOOL OF THE BIBLE in the SYNAGOGUE or Asselmbly then AL is under obligation to find where ANYONE dared add instruments to the SYNAGOGUE prior to ad 1815 and then they SOWED AL'S KIND OF DISCORD AND HAD TO HIRE A GENTILE ORGANIST BECAUSE IT WAS ALWAYS UNLAWFUL TO BLOW INSTRUMENTS ON THE SABBATH. Any Jewish schoolboy knew that. Jesus Christ knew it and compared the PIPING clergy to the children playing the fertility rituals of Dionysus.

Al cannot find the word synagogue many times in the Bible because it is a Greek word. However, another Hebrew word for Synagogue is:

God "SINGS" in judgment to Israelites who turned the nation into a bunch of worshipers with "wine, women and song" (Isaiah 5). However, He also sings over the faithful:

The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing (gladness). Zep 3:17

I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly,
who are of thee, to whom the
reproach of it was a burden (SONG). Zep 3:18

The burden Jesus died to remove was that laded on the backs of the "audience" which "created spiritual anxiety by religious ritual."

There are several dozens of uses of this word along with similar words.

There is nothing I am aware of in the Old Testament which sounds like SYNAGOGUE. Mowed and many other Hebrew or Aramaic words defined the assembly. However, the word SYNAGOGUE is a Greek term:

The Ekklesia at Athens, the ordinary Assemblies were called kuriai, the extraordinary being sunkletoi, ap. Dem.; ekkl. sunageirein, sunagein, sullegein, athroizein to call an assembly

The ekklesia of the Greeks was a male-only, called on demand something like a county court. They would have gotten you health care if you tried a case with sister singers and instrumentalists as "back up" to the testimony. When you do ekklesia it is important that everyone be silent and hear the total evidence before saying anything.

"In the first century AD, synagogues existed not only in the land of Israel but in all parts of the Roman Empire where Jews lived. Although incorporating a number of activities, the most characteristic features of this institution were
........... the public reading and teaching of torah,
........... making the synagogue an unparalleled institution in the ancient world.

Those who "gathered" in the NT did a form of "synagoguing" which was a school and not a pagan worship center. This Greek inscription was cut into Jerusalem limestone late in the first-century B.C.

"Theodotos, son of Vettenus, priest and synagogue head, son of a synagogue head, grandson of a synagogue head, built this synagogue -- whose foundations were laid by his ancestors, the elders and Simonides --

for the reading of Torah and for instruction in the commandments,
and the guest house with its rooms and water installations as lodging for
needy [pilgrims] from the Diaspora." (English translation of the inscription)

This was Paul's commandment to Timothy:

Till I come, give attendance to [public] reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 1Ti.4:13

Al Maxey could only get authority from silence to read the word and pray. Aren't we commanded to do that? Can we do it collectively? Yes. Then we are authorized to assemble. Does everyone have a Bible? No. Then we are commanded to gather to, as Paul insisted, "Give heed to the Word" or "give attendance to the public reading of the Word."

This happened from Mount Sinai onward and is often translated assembly or gathering and not synagogue. Therefore, are we authorized to call the assemby a "synagogue"? Yes. Then we have the authority to SYNAGOGUE to study the Word. WE DO NOT HAVE authority to do a charismatic musical performance.

Your "church" has come a long way, baby!
Therefore, only legalists look for loopholes in a law to try to add instruments or singers in "the school of Christ." Common decency defines the "law" when Jesus is in our midst: not what a Grace-Centered mentality will allow us to ge away with.

The instruments were for signaling or "grinding the enemy into power" of panic. This is the meaning of Psallo in the external sense.

Therefore, the alarm was never to be used on the people: the alarm was a musical attack.

And when they shall blow with them, all the assembly (SWARM) shall assemble (h3259) themselves to thee at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation (3259 synagogue). Nu. 10:3

But when the congregation (Qahal) is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not sound an alarm. Nu 10:7

The "alarm" was to play musical instruments and "make a joyful noise before the Lord." This was not worship but a BATTLE CRY. Therefore, it was not to be used on the "congregation" of God's people.

In Battle this is the Warrior's Battle cry: Remember that the Levitical musicians were UNDER the KING and the COMMANDERS OF THE ARMY:

and the foot soldiers shall stretch out their hands against the host...

Of the Messiah. just as prophesied in Psalm 41 of Judas whose Judas Bag
"carried the mouthpiecesof wind instruments."

They have overtaken me in a narrow pass (gap) without escape
        And there is no rest for
me in my trial.

They sound my censure upon a harp
         and their murmuring and storming upon a zither." Ps.41:11

However, when the WARRIOR MUSICIANS were defeated, then Messiah rejoices:

I will groan with the zither of lamentation
........ in all grief-stricken mourning and bitter complaint

until iniquity and wickedness are consumed
........ and the disease-bringing scourge is no more.

Then will I play on the zither of deliverance
........ and harp of joy,

on the tabors of prayer and the pipe of praise

This SPIRITUAL WARFARE WITH CARNAL INSTRUMENTS defines the external "melody" of the word psallo which is related to the twanging bowstring which sends a singing arrow to "grind" your heart into bits.

Those who added instruments into a peacable church deliberately intended to force the quiet reverent old people out of "their" newly stolen "church house of widows.

See how Fred Peatross, one of the Grace-Centered Stable Members wants to use this to create a witchcraft-like percussive VORTEX as worship for the emerging church of Christ: those emerging are the locusts of Revelation sent to sort out those with the Mark of the Word from those with the Mark of music.

Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths. Is.59:7

Jesus fed Judas the ground up "psalloed" sop as a supernatural sign because Psalm 41 prophesied that Judas would try to triumph over Jesus and this triumph was the military music.

The word Qahal is used interchangeably with Mowed so there are dozens of other instances of the people "assemblying." By the way, the synagogue is not the building or the organizaiton but the gathered people.

Only military age men were required to attend the Temple festivals three times a year and in Jerusalem and in Canaan and under the Law of Moses. This was not for public worship but for the rituals ot the civil-military and religious animal sacrifices of the officials of the state.

Old men, women and children were not required to attend the temple rituals where the "musical" panic noise was under the king and commanders of the army.

When Israel's leaders led them into musical idolatry at Mount Sinai, God gave the Law of Moses and made the people "strangers" to quarantine them from the tabernacle and then the temple which was influenced by the worship of the starry host to which god abandoned the leaders.

God ordained the gathering or synagoguing for the entire population.

And Moses commanded them, saying, At the end of every seven years, in the solemnity of the year of release, in the feast of tabernacles, Deut 31:10

But when the congregation is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not sound an alarm. Num 10:7

The alarm was to be blown for camp or military movements and God ordained the TWO silver trumpets. Alarm is:

Psalm 41 prophesied that Judas would attempt to "triumph over" Jesus and the JUDAS BAG was for "carrying the mouthpieces of wind instruments."

The meaning of TRIUMPH OVER:

"The general was allowed to enter the city crowned with a wreath of laurel, bearing a scepter in one hand, and a branch of laurel in the other, riding in a circular chariot, of a peculiar form, drawn by four horses. He was preceded by the senate and magistrates, musicians, the spoils, the captives in fetters, etc., and followed by his army on foot in marching order. The procession advanced in this manner to the Capitoline Hill, where sacrifices were offered, and victorious commander entertained with a public feast." Webster

There you have it Al, and it would do to accuse me of being a mental case or trying to ridicule me by claiming that your elders at Cuba Avenue Church of Christ couldn't stop laughing. You have a direct command to synagogue the entire nation. And this was also commanded in Numbers 10:7 and this passages absolutely forbids, outlaws, prohibits:

Playing instruments and making a joyful noise before the Lord.
 
Why was this? Why this does not define musical "worship" but it is the Israelite and all of the nation's WAR CHANT.

The church is Christian Synagogue: if you meet to worship IN SPIRIT by GIVING HEED TO THE WORDS OF CHRIST and you play instruments and engage in infantile frolic (the play at Mount Sinai) then you tell God: We will not listen to your words.

Al, this will not cause any harm. Believe me. Rather, it is the MARK throughout the Bible and contemporary writings that a people had "risen up to play" and moved beyond redemption.

When everyone has a Bible you simply do not pay someone to "sermonize" it when Jesus "fully expounded" His message to the Apostles and Peter outlawed "private interpretation" which is "further expounding" that which every member has already received as their "anointing."

We can really say that any of the meetings either in the central sanctuary of the state worship, or the people's meetings in their villages was a synagogue. In an institutional sense the Great Synagogue seems to have existed in Babylon and continued as local assemblies throughout the Intertestament time while the Temple went through many "captivities" with Hellenism and other change forces accompanying their captors.

We know that the Synagogue met regularly whether institutionalized or not:

And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side,
where
prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down
and
spake unto the women which resorted thither. Acts 16:13 

The assembly which was apparently a lawful site became a:

Sunerchomai (g4905) soon-er'-khom-ahee; from 4862 and 2064; to convene, depart in company with, associate with, or (spec.) cohabit (conjugally): - accompany, assemble (with), come (together), come (company, go) with, resort.

"Wont to be made" means that this was the "nominated by Law" place for the Jewish synagoguing. Paul obeyed the CHRIST PRINCIPLE:

For I will not dare to speak of any of those things
........ which Christ hath not wrought by me,
........ to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed. Rom 15:18

And this is the method of speaking which as the "in spirit" component of singing and melody in the heart. Whatever Paul did with the women synagoguing was what he commanded that the Ephesians do:

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Eph 5:19

The words of God found a place in Lydia's heart. That is, it cut or abraded or pricked her heart to respond to Paul's teaching:

One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message. Acts 16:14

And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us. Acts 16:15

Why do you suppose Paul didn't bring in the musical worship team--the universal "harem of the gods" to open Lydia's heart?

Because this was a synagogue or school of the Word, there was no "singing" in an external sense as "there was no praise service in the synagogue.

Paul "synagogued" with the "ekklesia" and taught. This was the purpose for the gathering of the church:

And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year
........ they assembled (synago) themselves
........ with the church (ekklesia=Greek congregation, Jewish synagogue),
........ ........ and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. Acts 11:26

This was the Qahal: instruments and loud singing was OUTLAWED.

Except in churches under the plague of Apollo's (Abaddon, Apollyon) Oracle of Delphi, we do not hear Paul even mentioning SINGING as an act of worship. This is because what Paul defined in the "singing" passages he defines as TEACHING or PREACHING which are not musical.

Sunago (g4863) soon-ag'-o; from 4862 and 71; to lead together, i.e. collect or convene; spec. to entertain (hospitably): - / accompany, assemble (selves, together), bestow, come together, gather (selves together, up, together), lead into, resort, take in.

Because there seems to be no Dionysic or "singing while drunk on wine" Paul does not allude to external singing while there: eleminate Antioch.

Again, Paul's command to Timothy was not to conduct a "singing school" but:

Till I come, attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching. 1 Timothy 4:13RSV

"Give attendance" is a worship concept while singing never is!

The "church" was where the congregation or Christian Synagogue met. We have a direct command from God that when the Israelites "synagogues" that they were to teach people and not "play instruments and make a joyful noise before the Lord" because this was the war alarm or panic music.

Therefore, the direct commands of Paul in Romans 15, Ephesians 5 and Colossians 3 was NOT to sing but to TEACH. The singing (secular) and the melody (military abrasion or tool of the prostitute) was to be IN THE HEART.

ANYONE WITH EARS HAD BETTER LISTEN!

What is authority?

Authority is normaly defined in terms of a task. For instance, the task of the parents and other leaders of Israel was to teach the sacred writings. This could be in sitting down, rising up, walking by the way or by gathering in a building protected from the weather. A privelege was prayer at any time or any place and it was never institutionalized until the Pharisees found out that they could make PRAYER into a profession like PREACHER. That is, if embellished it could be peddled as a way to steal the houses of widows. Archaeology also shows that there were numerous altars outside of Jerusalem where animals were sacrificed.

The authority for the church is the same as for the synagogue: the operative task is to make known the manifest wisdom of God to the World. It is to be a Christian Synagogue. It is never defined in terms of WORSHIP RITUALS.

The people in Romans 14 would have a instrumental music background from the Orphics of Dionysics. Therefore, sind the church or synagogue had no role for the "music" word, the way to perform synagoguing and prevent division was:

For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning,
........ that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Romans 15:4

Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: Romans 15:5
........ That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God,
........ even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 15:6

That is a DIRECT COMMAND which excludes someone sermonizing the Word of Christ which had been fully preached to them once to make them competent.

When few people knew the Word, and there were few written documents available, the teaching task fell into the hands of the Levitical tribe who primarily taught the parents who, in turn, taught their family. And much of this teaching had to do with how to live under the Law of Moses:

Take heed in the plague of leprosy, that thou observe diligently, and do according to all that the priests the Levites shall teach you: as I commanded them, so ye shall observe to do. Deut 23:8

Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land. 2 Kings 17:27

For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach and without the law. 2 Chronicles 15:3

The priest, who was given a daily dole of bread, was unfaithful if he preached or taught other that what had been written to people who did not have their own copy of the law.

However, almost from the beginning, the priestly class failed and this is why those who use THE LAW OF SILENCE to introduce music which always divides do not know that the synagogue is not institution as ekklesia is not institution but it is the time and place where the Word of God is taught one to another.

Even as now, there is more reward to those who promote music:

The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the Lord, and say, Is not the Lord among us? none evil can come upon us. Micah 3:11

Just listened to a web sermon where the preacher said that they didn't have any new "programs" for the year: we will just wait for the Holy Spirit to tell us what to do. The clear, cultish meaning is: "When WE decide to do something YOU had better not object to the plan of the Holy Spirit person whom we have captured."

"The religious ecstasy induced by music expressed itself either in an outburst of emotions, thus giving rise to religious catharsis,
........ or in a transfer to the state of prophecy.

"In this way music became an important factor in divination. In the mysteries of Magna Mater this relationship between music and divination is particularly clear. Through the din of tambourines, cymbals and flutes the ecstatic worshiper of the goddess prophesied the future to those present. From time immemorial music had been especially valued in the service of prophecy. " (Quasten, Johannes, Music and Worship in Pagan and Christian Antiquity, p. 39)

Consequently Apollo was god of prophets and musicians and Pan was god of medicine, music and divination. (Apollo is Abaddon or Apollyon who had a Seeker Center at Delphi)

This relationship also explains why the expression for "making music" and "prophesying" was often identical in the ancient tongues. origen contra celsum 8.67.

The Hebrew word Naba signifies not only "to prophesy" but also "to make music." (Quasten, Johannes, Music and Worship in Pagan and Christian Antiquity, p. 39)

The notion which was basic to this conception was closely connected wiht belief in the purifying power of music. In both instances there was a question of eleminating tensions and obstacles in man which could stand in the way of the infusion of the divine and its revelation. (Quasten, p. 40)

As a result, people arose within the villages who taught the Word of God and led the people in prayer. This was the essence of the Synagogue. By the time Jesus came, much of the temple clergy was corrupt and murderous.

I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and mind (Spirit). I will firmly establish his house, and he will minister before my anointed one always. 1 Samuel 2:35

Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a crust of bread and plead, "Appoint me to some priestly office so I can have food to eat. 1 Samuel 2:36

Sorry, old silence rejecters but Jesus fired the doctors of the law who took away the key to knowledge. He sent out men who teach the Word "as it has been taught" and allow the church to "synagogue" by becoming a SCHOOL OF THE BIBLE and not a worship center.

And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. Mark 8:31

This is repeated today and people begin to fail when leaders tire of the Word of God and substitute the skills of society. Therefore, as then, many retire from the "central temples" and begin to meet in homes. This is a faithful repoduction of the move from Temple-Sacrificial system to the home and the Word. Unfortunately, home churches also have a way of getting too organized.

Synagogue, like "church," has nothing to do with buildings and originally nothing to do with organizations or institutions. The word literally means an assembly or an appointed time or place.

The primary tasks of teaching the revealed Word and prayer was carried out in assembled groups and therefore needed no new authority.

Institutionalizing the Synagogue

Teaching the Word never took place until God took away the temple which was devoted to the worship of the Sun or other starry hosts to which God turned Israel over in the wilderness. Be aware that the general population participated in the temple rituals only through tribal representatives: it was not for congregational meetings;

"Since the Babylonian Jews were unable to participate in the worship of the cultus as in former days, the exile marked an important turning-point in their religious developmemt. Open-air meetings by the Kabar irrigation-canal replaced gatherings in the Temple and its precincts, a non-sacrificial worship emphasized confession, fasting, prayer, and the reading of the Law, and initial improvisations were developed to the point where the faithful community aimed at as great a spiritual differentation from the pagan Babylonians as was possible.

The Babylonian NATIONAL worship was practiced in Jerusalem. Therefore, since God carried out His sentence imposed at Mount Sinai because of musical idolatry, the people were somewhat cured. Here is what they refused to do:

That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up: Da.3:5

This is contrary to the Grace-Centered, ushering in the new Post-Modern, emerging church of Christ which, according to Rubel Shelly and apparently Al, become as much like the world as possible to attract the world.

With the development of house-gatherings and the increased importance attached to the knowledge and observance of the Torah, there was laid the basis for subsequent synagogue-worship, an institution that owes its origin to the diligence of Ezekiel." (Harrison, R. K., Introduction to the Old Testament, Eerdmans, p.414).

"The Synagogue-worship, developed by and after the exile, largely substituted the book for the symbol, and thought for the sensuous or object appeal" (Int Std. Bible Ency., Worship. p. 3111).

This, we believe, was defended by Jesus who said that worship was not "here" nor "there" but worship is in spirit or in the mind and the resource of dialog with God was prayer and the truth of His Word which He equated to "Spirit and Life." John 6:63

What about singing and other "acts of worship?"

Social functions such as singing were not held in the synagogues but "at the places of watering" and not during the "assembly" time. Alfred Edersheim makes clear: there was not a role for "praising the Lord" or singing in a celebrative sense in the synagogue. Perhaps for this reason, there is no evidence of a "praise" service in the New Testament church. What we might call singing would have been chanting (cantillation as in Cantor) the Biblical text (originally the prose sections) with an elevated voice. The metrical passages (which are many) would fit responsive reading while the prose sections rarely work smoothly.

For instance, Deborah dwelled under palm tree to apply the Law as a judge. She was a Judge and not a worship leader. Because of failed male leadership she had to become the warrior chief of the nation. Deborah is identified as a prophetess which means the wife of a prophet or a poetic chanter or musician like Miriam. However, her task was judging the people.

And when they celebrated her victory as a warrior the NIV translates:

the voice of the singers at the watering places. They recite the righteous acts of the LORD, the righteous acts of his warriors in Israel.

"Then the people of the LORD went down to the city gates. Judges 5:11NIV

This is the Greek word the NIV translates singers:

And the Lord shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the Lord God shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwinds of the south. Zec.9:14

Berowsh (h1265) ber-osh'; of uncert. der.; a cypress (?) tree; hence a lance or a musical instrument (as made of that wood): - fir (tree).

The serpent was the nachash or Chaldean musician: Lucifer was the male counterpart who as the tallest tree in Eden used his musical instruments to seduce Eve:

The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chestnut trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty. Eze.31:8

Howl, fir tree; for the cedar is fallen; because the mighty are spoiled: howl, O ye oaks of Bashan; for the forest of the vintage is come down. Zec.11:2

Therefore, there is nothing similar to singing or musicians in this passage and the NIV makes "arrow" a suitable substitute for "singing.."

They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, there shall they rehearse the righteous acts of the Lord, even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel:
........ then shall the people of the Lord go down to the gates. Judges 5:11KJV

Of course, every archer had a "lyre"--his bow. Twanging the bow makes a noise and the "singing" of the arrow means that it is about to enter the enemies heart to kill him. This twanging or hair plucking is the basis of PSALLO which Paul used in the "singing" passages which are rather "teaching" passages.

Psallo carries the same idea of "grinding one into bits" and it is therefore related to the "SOP" Jesus fed Judas.

Jesus condemed praise as saying "Lord, Lord" and therefore praise always had an object. For instance, as the people praised Deborah, the Jews praised God by telling others how He saved the people at the Red Sea. God explicitly condemns the prophesiers (singers, chanters, deliverers of non-biblical messages) because the Word was not in them.

There is no musical concept in the Bible related to the true worship of God. Music in Greek is "symphonia" and relates only to secular festivals and to the end-time Babylonian Harlot worship.

Praising God or the military leader was something done at any time or place but ritualized praise would embarasse most humans. Albert Barnes notes of the daily rituals of Israel:

"An artificial, effeminate music which should relax the soul, frittering the melody, and displacing the power and majesty of divine harmony by tricks of art, and giddy, thoughtless, heartless, souless versifying would be meet company." (Barnes, Albert, Amos, p. 303).

In the history of Israel, focus upon set rituals was often at the expense of the poor.

How About Biblical Authority?

There is one translation of the word into synagogues in the book of Psalms. This is a direct prophecy of the Grace-Centered people actively standing up and roaring in the synagogues even with banners for signs or MARKS. They chase the old people out and steal the "church houses of widows."

Thine enemies roar in the midst of thy congregations (synagogues); they set up their ensigns (Banners) for signs. Psalm 74:4

Or: There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey;
they have
devoured souls; they have taken the treasure and precious things;
........ they have made her many widows in the midst thereof. Eze. 22:25

They have cast fire into thy sanctuary, they have defiled by casting down the dwelling place of thy name to the ground. Psalm 74:7

They said in their hearts, Let us destroy them together: they have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land. Psalm 74:8

Defiled is:

The people in general did not worship at the sanctuary of God's name, but normally in their own villages or homes. The Living Bible translates verse 8:

"Let's wipe out every trace of God," they said, and went through the entire country burning down the assembly places where we worshiped you. Psalm 74:8LIV .

Al Maxey: The proponents of the "prohibitive nature of biblical silence" insist that any manmade addition to the written revelation of God constitutes an unlawful innovation, and that such is therefore "unauthorized" and sinful.

This is exactly the situation with the synagogue system!!!

No, that is not the truth.

We have shown that this is not true. In the church the command of Paul to Timothy was to "give attendance to the public reading of the Word, to doctrine to reproof." The Word is the resource for the church as the Word was the teaching resource for the Jews. Because we don't all have copies of the Old Testament, we assemble with the traveling priest and he reads it to us. That assembly is the "synagogue" which is not an INSTITUTIONALIZE word. However, Numbers 10:7 outlaws the alarm or "sounding instruments and making a joyful noise before the Lord" when the congregation assembles.

For the v...ee...e..rr..ii...eeee slow, we repeat:

But when the congregation is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not sound an alarm. Nu.10:7

The assembly is commanded:

This is the same "alarm" or triumph over Judas and the clergy would try on Jesus. Music repeats the process.

The polluting, arrow shooting, abrading, breaking to pieces of the synagogue speaks directly to the Twanging Bow and the Singing Arrow of external melody. No one prior to the "high church, post-modern, latter day prophets" of our generation ever claimed that the Bible authorized musical instruments. And on the contrary, the Bible universally says that music tells God during His "synagoguing": we will not listen to your Word.

Al doesn't know that for the same reason he gives people permission to add instruments by absolutely contradicting all that the Bible has to say about the synagogue: it says "we will not listen to your word but just make up our own straw man so we can kick him down and remain on the unlawful dole."

Al Maxey: The OT writings do NOT "authorize" it; it is an addition to the Temple system, and it was conceived and created by MAN.

No, that is not the truth.

There is no real connection between the temple which was added "because of transgression."

On the contrary, the temple system was added when Israel's elders fired God and demanded a human king with a human kingdom so that they could worship like the nations.

God prophesied that the kings would carry out the penalty of "because of transgression" in falling back into musical idolatry at Mount Sinai: God gave them kings in His anger and took them away in His anger when the sentence was carried out. The temple system was not for the people's congregation but the civil-political system of a like the nations temple-state. The synagoguing function of the non-clergy never missed a beat. In Ecclesiasticus:

6. who brought kings down to destruction, and famous men from their beds;
7. who heard rebuke at Sinai and judgments of vengeance at Horeb;
8. who anointed kings to inflict retribution,
........ and prophets to succeed you.

O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help. Hosea 13:9

I will be thy king: where is any other that may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes? Hosea 13:10
........ I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath. Hosea 13:11

It was the temple and sacrifices "like the nation" which was conceived by the elders because the pagans did it that way. God always answers prayers and gave them a king and a kingdom to destroy them: to carry out the sentence from the musical idolatry at Mount Sinai.

Al Maxey: Indeed, in some locations it even came to replace the Temple system among the local Jews.

No, that is NEVER the truth. The temple existed only in Jerusalem and in Canaan. Only Aaronic musicians made the loud, horrifying noise during the burning of animals. The common people were "put outside the camp" by the SIGNAL of the loud instruments.

The common people synagogued (always) when a priest held Bible classes.

The synagogue never ceased to exist but was more institutionalized during the intertestament period.

Al Maxey: "Why go to the Temple? We have the synagogue!" By this "law of exclusion," therefore, it must automatically be characterized as a "sinful system," and all who engage in it or endorse it by their use of it are engaging in that which is "unlawful" before their God.

This is the logical conclusion of this "law of silence."

How silly, Al. Male draft age men went to the temple. Others were represented by stationary men. The people never went to the temple to "worship." There is no example of congregational singing with instruments as an ACT of worship.

Again, at the end of every Seven Years:

Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates,
........ that they may hear, and that they may learn,
........ and fear the Lord your God, and observe to do all the words of this law: Deut 31:12

The women, children and old people were not commanded to "synagogue" at the temple except in connection with the Jubilee cycle which apparently was never observed.

The people were commanded to KEEP THE SABBATH as a DAY OF REST and NOT a DAY OF WORSHIP. This was God's provision to keep the people AWAY from the Sabbath "worship" which was the same as in Babylon or Egypt.

Therefore, the synagogue was school and not a pagan worship center.

It might be logical if the premise or Biblical evidence supported Al but it does not.

Again, only draft-age males were commanded to "muster" three times a year at the temple where the "musicians" were under the king and commanders of the army. The common people who might be incidentially in Jerusalem were SHUT OUT of the temple when the loud, horrifying noise was made during the burning of animals.

God actually quarantined the temple system to keep the common people out during these horrifying rituals.

God gave Israel The Book of the Covenant which had no "worship rituals" any more than did the Patriarchal system. However, Israel "rose up to play" which means that they repeated the musical idolatry they had learned in Egypt. For that sin which was a "prayer" for a new leader, God turned the nation over to the worship of the starry hosts. The Levites were added as oppressors to keep the common people out of the synagogue and later out of the temple.

The "noise making" Levitical instrumentalists never entered the holy place representing the church or into the most holy place where individual Christians come boldly before the throne of Grace.

Al Maxey: Now, the problem: JESUS engaged in this synagogue system!!!!! In fact, He did so regularly. The gospel records tell us He freely embraced this "unauthorized innovation" and never once condemned it in any way. Indeed, Luke 4:16 tells us that He had developed the habit of participating in this synagogue system!!! "He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, AS WAS HIS CUSTOM."

No, that is not the truth.

Jesus didn't have to condemn meeting to read the Word. Indeed as Spirit He had commanded that the congregation be assembled but only when there was a need to instruct the whole community or their representatives. The Spirit of Christ also outlawed instruments and loud singing during this time of school. If you will remember, Moses SPAKE or taught his songs so that the elders could LEARN Scripture. However, Miriam (Bitter) played and sang and "led the women out." As ever, music was the realm of children, women or PERVERTED MALES.

Whether He endorsed or did not endorse, Al misses the point: "Willie Sutton, Why do you rob banks?" Willie Sutton: "Because that is where the money is." Jesus, why do you resort in the temple COURTS and synagogue and the world?

Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world;
........ I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple,
........ whither the Jews always resort;
........ ........ and in secret have I said nothing. John 18:20

Jesus couldn't get into the Holy Place as a type of the church of Christ. Neither could the "musical" Levites.

Did Jesus "endorse" the world? Did Jesus endorse the Temple? Did He endorse the synagogue? No, I taught in the temple courts "because that was where the Jews resorted," a word like SYNAGOGUED.

Is a place of "resorting" or gathering illegal? Did the Jews violate the law by meeting to read the Word? Nonesense! Jesus taught in boats, are boats illegal? Does that then give us permission to assault the ears of man and God with machines just because Jesus taught in a boat and there was no LAW which saith, "Thou shalt teach in a boat?" Nonsense and proof positive of why Jesus fired the clergy.

Jesus condemned "stand up prayers," issued a direct command that prayers are always personal and private, directed alms from my hand to the hand of the poor. That excludes everything in the Synagogue except reading and discussing the Word "as it had been delivered." Jesus stood up only because the pulpit held up the scriptures and not the preacher: then He had the common decency to sit down.

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was,
he went into the synagogue
on the sabbath day,
and stood up for to read. Lu.4:16
 
Here is how you preach:
 
For Moses of old time hath in every city them
that preach him,

in the synagogues every sabbath day. Ac.15:21
That is exactly how Paul told Timothy to do the work: "Devote yourself to the public reading of the Word, to exhortion (of the Word) and to doctrine."

By destroying Solomon's temple the synagogue of the people still existed because it always existed, translate it as "synagogue" or not.

Jesus as "the Spirit of the Prophets" did not give the sabbath as a day of worship. Rather, the day was for REST. "Churching" is one of the most works-intensive days of the week and the most stressing. However, the Babylonians had observed the Sabbath as a day of rest for the kings and priests but the common people "worshiped" by providing the gods or agents of the gods with food, clothing, housing, entertainmet, music and sex: musical worship teams were always know as "the harem of the gods" and indeed the modern praise craze coming out of the vineyard promotes having a climax with God or "making the Spirit come."

By setting aside the Sabbath for REST God made sure that no one would organize a "worship ritual for the people to support the agents of the gods."

A community with ten men could form a synagogue or assembly for reading the Word. This perhaps justified a priest coming out on his circuit to teach.

The Law of Silence may not be valid but it is valid for SPEAKING THINE ON WORDS and calling it "worship through sermonizing."

If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him,
not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own
pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Isaiah 58:13
We have the DIRECT COMMAND not to speak thine own words in the synagogue and there was NO PRAISE SERVICE in the synagogue. We have the approved example of the teachers of MOSES in the synagogue every Sabbath.

One could REST in the synagogue free from musical ritual, making offerings or anything but listening to the Word and remaining for conversation with the scholars or even go on to advanced studies. The synagogue in a Christian sense is A SCHOOL OF CHRIST and is not a pagan worship center.

Al Maxey: This is the Greek word "etho" which refers to that which is done routinely, habitually. Jesus, who was still living under LAW, was routinely and habitually participating in that which had NO AUTHORIZATION in the Law.

No, that is not the truth. Al's entire paper is based on his false assumption that God did not authorize meeting to listen to the Word of God. Elsewhere, etho did not mean that He "regularly worshiped in the synagogue" but that he regularly taught where ever He was.

Etho (g1486) eth'-o; a prim. verb; to be used (by habit or conventionality); neut. perf. part. usage: - be custom (manner, wont).

AND he arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judaea by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he was wont, he taught them again. Mark 10:1

Jesus went to the synagogue or taught anywhere because that is what He was taught and by his natural impulse. If you have the urge to teach on the street corner you do not VIOLATE the law of silence. But it might be:

Ethos (g1485) eth'-os; from 1486; a usage (prescribed by habit or law): - custom, manner, be wont..

According to the custom of the priests office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. Lu.1:9
And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the
custom of the feast. Lu.2:42

If Al is correct then he is probably wrong by suggesting that there was no command for a regular assembly:

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. Heb 10:25

Episunagoge (g1997) ep-ee-soon-ag-o-gay'; from 1996; a complete collection; spec. a Chr. meeting (for worship): - assembling (gathering) together.

And the assembly was not for musical worship but for exhorting one another. That doesn't sound like it authorizes a preacher, Al.

Jesus did not participate in the musical sacrifices at the Temple because He knew the Jews were largely lost beyond redemption or they would never have begged for a temple. However, Jesus choose to meet only with those who READ the Word as it had been written, where there was no "praise service" and assuredly no instrumental music. Synagogue was not pagan worship center but "school of the Bible. If we have the Bible and are commanded to teach it then we need no direct command restricting the 'place' where we teach it.

While the people come to the ekklesia mistranslated as church, the ekklesia had no "standing army" or band of people living off widows. It met, made decisions, passed judgment and then dismissed until IT WAS CALLED.

We don't believe that Jesus "took liberties" with people who took liberties to invent something which violated the Law of Moses:

And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits (Old, empty wineskins as musical instruments), and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter (these people used musical devices and said that the gods lived inside of them): should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? Isaiah 8:19
To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isaiah 8:20

I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the Lord; and I will heal him. Isa 57:19

By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to his name. Heb 13:15
That is still a fact: sermonizing and versifying spits in the fact of Jesus (or makes Him into a tambourine according to Job) because they do not obey the proof that Jesus was the Son of God by speaking only what God spoke. It violates the direct command to Paul that the elders are the only pastor-teachers and must "teach the Word as it has been taught." So "further expounding" is "private interpretation" and shows a total disgust for the Words of Christ and opens up the process for false (professional) prophets.

Therefore, the most common word for what the Christians did in the New Testament was to "synagogue themselves." No believer would have any trouble entering most synagogues of the time. He would not engage in an unlawful or a man-made institution of worship. Rather, he or we would go there to hear the reader read portions of the Scripture so that you could hear it all in three years.

A prayer may be made but only the Pharisees made long-winded prayers. Most prayers were reading prayers of the Bible as songs were Biblical passages but there was no singing in the synagogue.

Al Maxey: Jesus participated in a manmade innovation, and never once condemned it. When He stood up in the synagogue to proclaim Truth, why is it He never once condemned their "departure from the pattern" by their "unauthorized innovations?"

Why didn't He condemn their violation of the "law of silence?" He had many opportunities to do just that, and yet there is no record that He ever did. Why not?!!!

No, that is not the truth. The teaching is a God-made process and Al is innovating or improvizing to make his point by turning the Word upside down.

Al, you and the Grace people just judge, condemn and harrass honest people who are doing what they have done for 2,000 years, and in judgmental ways which no non-mechanical preacher would do (I am not a preacher). Then you blame those whom you shoot in the heart for squirting blood on you. And all the time you have ignored the totality of the Old and New Testament that:

The Spirit of Christ commanding the synagoguing process. The Jews synagogued and God outlawed the "music" of warfare when they did so.

And the Spirit of Christ absolutely outlawing instruments and loud singing during the gathering.

But when the congregation is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not sound an alarm. Num 10:7

The best Al will do is tell me that I need mental help: that is the common response from the Grace Centered group who will not answer any Biblical evidence that they are flat wrong!

Gathering (synagoguing) for instruction was God-Given along with the command that the priests teach the Word. It had not rituals and therefore no possiblity of adding divisive sinful practices. It was only in 1815 AD that a liberal synagogue decided to become a seeker center by adding an organ. Then, since playing an instrument on the sabbath was unlawful, they hired a Gentile organist. As predicted, they went to court, divided the synagogue but they had their "ensign of Baal."

Al Maxey: This is a tremendous dilemma for those who insist that "silence is prohibitive." I have never seen it adequately addressed or explained by those who declare the "law of silence" to be a sound principle of biblical interpretation and a valid tool for establishing "authority."

How would silence AUTHORIZE when those speaking from silence know that when they break the silence by introducing instrumental music they are going to violate a warning about sowing discord.

Al, that then is a tremendous dilemma for the Holy Spirit Who has filled Scripture with warnings against going beyond what the Spirit reveals.

And this is a denial, as with all of the Post-Moderns, that the Spirit spoke the truth. It is also an awful confession to not being aware of 2,000 years of church history.

The law of silence is not needed by congregational singers. However, it was first and almost always used by instrumentalists. It goes thus: "God has NOT said 'Thou Shalt Not Use an Instrument.' Therefore, the LAW OF SILENCE gives us the right to use an instrument knowing that it will sow discord.

Paul defined the "first instrument of choice" in the word PSALMOS which is the human voice. In the English use of the word "sing" the first instrument of choice is the human voice. If I say "make melody with a harp" then I have limited the instrument. If I say "make melody with the voice or heart" then I have listed the first one of choice and co-opted other instruments.

The instrumentalist's Law of Silence says that Silence is Definitive of an Audible practice.

However, preachifying and versifying has stripped most bare of the Bible so that they do not grasp that there is a law of silence in the Bible. Furthermore, everyone before the latter-day preachers believed in and practiced THE LAW OF SILENCE.

It is difficult to put into words the utter contempt for the Word by denying that it universally associates "music" with paganism or telling God: "We will not listen to you." It ignores the fact that Lucifer was the innovator of music to deceive Adam and Eve. It ignores the fact that the same agent propells the modern end-time Babylon whore worship. It ignores the fact that all of the known literature associates music with satanic frenzy which coudl be sold at the truth. It ignores the fact that the church fathers and denominational founders repudiate music as surely as it repudates sexual intercourse which was always part of the TWIN to keep people's mind off the word of God.

Al Maxey: Let's be honest here. Either this "law" is valid, or it is not. If it is valid, then it should be consistently applied. If it is valid and consistently applied, then Jesus stands condemned by this "law of silence."

No, that is not the truth.

The "Law" is that God ordained both the resource (that which is written), the teaching process (reading the Word) and the "gathering" (synagoguing) of the people to be instructed.

It was SYNAGOGUING to read and discuss the Word which was prior to the UNLAWFUL and destructive temple which is the DIRECT COMMAND.

The sacrificial had been officially dead for several hundred years: the Greeks especially tried to force the young men to become male prostitutes to serve in the temple and gymnasium.  Most of the faithful Israelites had fled and mercinaries were brought in. Therefore, there was NO Jewish worship which used either instruments or singing.  That would mean that Jesus would have had to ADD something condemned throughout the Law period. 

That Law was not changed at the time of Jesus. Jesus approved standing up and reading the Word and then having the common decency to sit dow.

The church is defined by Paul in terms of the synagogue.

Therefore, apostasy added performance preaching, taking up collection to support 'MISSIONARIES IN RESIDENCE,' singing secular songs, the use of MUSIC which is NEVER a Biblical worship word, and organizing social programs which VIOLATE the direct command, the approved examples and early church history.

The same God outlawed instruments and loud singing during this period of instruction. The same God identified this with the "triumph over" which would be facilitated by Judas whose "thief's bag" was for carrying the mouthpieces of wind instruments.

It ignores the fact that Jesus repudiated the "team" mourning musicians, identified the clergy with the effeminate Dionysus "girls" who wanted to force him into the singing and dancing to prove that he was perverted.

The Spirit of Christ is the Spirit of the prophets: He gave the Word and He instructed how it should be taught and He excluded singing and instruments. The Jews, however evil, clearly never went so beyond redemption that they ever sang with musical instruments in the synagogue. NEVER. Therefore, to ignore the synagoguing authority in order to add musical instruments is to profoundly pervert the clear Word of God for a purpose which not even Pharisees dared to go.

Al Maxey: Obviously, we can't have JESUS doing anything sinful, however. Scripture declares that He was WITHOUT SIN.

Thus, His actions in participating in an "unauthorized" innovation of men was NOT considered sinful.
This, at best, shows the "law of silence" to be
woefully inconsistent and subjective in its application.

There you go, Al:

"How old is that fossil"? It is a million years old. "How do you know"? It was found in rocks a million years old. "How do you know that they are a million years old?" Because we found this million year old fossil in it.

No, that is not the truth. Well, the entire New Testament demands that we teach the Word as it has been taught for two reasons:

it has been given by inspiration and to misuse it is to repudiate the Spirit Who delivered it with supernatural proof.

Second, it opens up the process for those who seem to intentionally sow discord by assuming as Paul implied of the Corinthians: "Fools love to be fooled."

When people lack knowledge God never commanded (never, ever) to assemble to "worship" with music. Rather, when He commanded an assembly or SYNAGOGUE it was to be instructed and pray: That's all, folks!

The synagogue is commanded; Al's "worship ritual" has been condemned, therefore he is making a living out of the LAW OF SILENCE:

I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I the Lord speak righteousness, I declare things that are right Isaiah 45:19

Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, ye that are escaped of the nations:
they have no knowledge
that set up the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save. Isaiah 45:20

Assemble is:

Qabac (h6908) kaw-bats'; a prim. root; to grasp, i. e. collect: - assemble (selves), gather (bring) (together, selves together, up), heap, resort, * surely, take up.

Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the Lord (Jehovah)? and there is no God (Elohim) else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. Isa 45:21

Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. Isa 45:22

I have sworn by myself, the WORD is gone out of my MOUTH in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. Isa 45:23

So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him. Isaiah 59:19

And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord. Isaiah 59:20

As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seeds seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever. Isaiah 59:21

If I listen to a TV preacher I do not commit a sin because I am commanded to be a truth seeker. If I organize a divisive, destructive, sectarian NEW RELIGION which makes the non-biblical "music" concept into an indispensible "act of worship" then I am innovating, care nothing for the Word, and am divisive.

If I went into a Catholic church and explained why the blood wasn't literally the blood of Christ I would be "going and preaching" but not sinning. The synagogue was local school and even the library: Jesus would not be participating in a man made religion which did something unbiblical and destructive if He went in to read.

This is why He never participated in the temple animal sacrifices which was the only place the loud, horrifying sound was made during the animal burning times.

The synagogue didn't eve have praise services.

Therefore, why isn't Al seeing this as an approved example of repudiating musical noise (never called music).

Al Maxey: Someone, in response to this, once said that "Jesus had a mission and to complete His mission He needed a place to teach." Well, could He have not taught in the marketplace? Could He have not taught in private homes? Could He have not taught out in the open areas? Or from a boat to those on the shore? Could He have not taught in the Temple courts? There were many places where Jesus could have taught, and indeed He utilized them all effectively.

Why this need therefore to add to His list that which was supposedly an "abomination" to His Father?!!

Sure, and He did teach in the marketplace, but He associated the Jewish "worship" to marketplace religion and the clergy to the musical children who played games of commerce and forgotten fertility worship:

But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, Matt 11:16

And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. Mt.11:17

The singing and dancing would have MARKED Jesus as either Dionysus or a worshiper of Dionysus. Only women and homosexual men got initiated in these rituals of the worship of the God of the New Wineskins.

Greeks considered madness an important aspect of worship.  Women in particular responded to Bacchus (also known as Dionysus), the god of madness; 'him of the orgiastic cry, exciter of women, Dionysus, glorified with mad honors'.  (Plutarch, Moralia 671c  Ancient Corinth was a center of Dionysiac worship, and Pausinius, world traveler of the second century of our era gives this description:

In the market-place, for most of the temples are there, is the Ephesian Artemis, and there are two wooden statues of Dionysus, gilt except the faces, which are painted with red paint, one they call Lysian Dionysus and the other Dionysus the Reveler.  The tradition about these statues I will record.  Pentheus, they say, when he outraged dionysus, among other acts of reckless daring actually at last went to mount Cithaeron to spy on the women, and climbed up into a tree to see what they were doing; and when they detected him, they forthwith dragged him down, and tore him limb from limb.  And afterwards, so they say at Corinth, the Pythian priestess told them to discover that tree and pay it divine honors.  And that is why these statues are made of that very wood.  (Description of Greece, II.ii; tr. A.R. Shilleto)

Jesus "synagogued" even on the hillside because that is where the people gathered or assembled or synagogued. If people gathered in a private home, the most common place for the Jewish gathering, he would be synagoguing or schooling.

He would not be engaged in a "worship ritual" because worship rituals are outlawed by Jesus by making the only PLACE for worship the human spirit. That left "church" or ekklesia which was never a Greek "worship place" but a place for public information.

Therefore, if Al uses this Law of Silence for himself he makes the clear claim that TEACHING is not legal unless we can prove that we have the right setting.

Well, Al, I can tell you one thing with certainty: the teaching is probably unlawful and most assuredly destructive if it is not a ONE ANOTHER teaching process or if we listen to a preacher with a cut N paste sermon outline.

Indeed, part of the first century temple area was a synagogue. However, not even the "instrumental noise makers" ever went into the holy place or most holy place. Neither could Jesus. However, the task was to TEACH and this left the time and place up to opportunity.

However, if the direct, unambigious command is to "TEACH" the Word I cannot replace the Word with silly, sentimental, often erotic, self-directed praise poems, set them to music and bring in an orchestra. See the difference? Well, then ask any preacher if he will allow a brass band to play while he is doing the unlawful task of "PREACHING the Word."

Would it be better to teach the words of Jesus in a BUILDING not commanded,

Or teach the words of the preacher in an authorized building?

Jesus only once "stood up to read" and then had the common decency to sit down. His task was not to endorse but to show that the Jews did not understand the Law.

Al Maxey: Another person, in response to this synagogue argument, suggested that Jesus could "use the facilities" of this synagogue system without HAVING to lend His "consent" to it, or even needing to comment upon whether it "may or may not have been an improper organization."

Jesus met in buildings. Therefore, meeting in buildings is lawful.

The synagogue was not a CHURCH SCHEME but a place to teach. If teaching is lawful then the place is lawful.

Jesus met in the temple COURT but prophesied the total destruction of the complex. Assuredly He did not endorse the temple system.

The pagan shrines Solomon constructed in Jerusalem included the worship of Molech by sacrificing children to the beat of musical instruments. Jesus could preach against Molech but He could not "fellowship" with Molech or Chiun or Saturn.

Al Maxey: To this I would ask: Is such a statement consistent with one's "law of silence?"

By this reasoning, one should therefore go ahead and worship with those who sing with IM, for example, and never say anything about it one way or the other!

You do not have to lend your "consent" to it by your participation, but you can be present and participate (just as Jesus did) without ever having to speak out against it.

This another person doesn't speak for the Bible. Therefore, any deductions reached from false information is false teaching.

But, Al, contrary to the new Antiism I have no urge or need to "go ahead and worship with instruments." Why are you GRACE CENTERS so hostile against those who will not "sing and dance while you pipe"? Why do YOU need to see everyone singing with instruments?

The urge of the old right wing judgmental crowd have flipped over to a left wing judgmentalism: we MUST endorse those whom we believe to be wrong by articipating. Bunk. That is just psychological violence.

All of Al's conclusions are of course based on the strange ignoring of all of the evidence that THE SYNAGOGUE WAS COMMANDED and MUSICAL REJOICING WAS OUTLAWED. We have the DIRECT COMMANDS, THE APPROVED EXAMPLES AND ALL OF THE INFERENCES YOU WISH.

THERE WERE NO INSTRUMENTS IN THE SYNAGOGUE AND FURTHERMORE "THERE WAS NO PRAISE SERVICES IN THE SYNAGOGUE" BECAUSE THIS WOULD VIOLATE THE DIRECT COMMAND IN NUMBERS 10:7.

The instrumentalists don't really need you there to validate their decision. They would just be as happy if you stayed at home and supported your own congregation where you would not have to participate: when a 50 horsepower organ begins to blow its "chist of whistles" you just have to participate when your brain rattles inside of your skull.

Al Maxey: You do not have to lend your "consent" to it by your participation, but you can be present and participate (just as Jesus did) without ever having to speak out against it.

But, we have shown that it is UNTRUTH to claim that Jesus participated in an UNLAWFUL system without speaking against it. Surely, past Bible 101a we should grasp that Jesus warned against the synagogue 'GIVERS' and the synagogue PRAYERS. His direct command was to pray in private which is IN SPIRIT as the only place God looks for our worship.

But, leave it to God, no one is going to teach or learn when the instrument is playing.

Al Maxey: Such actions would, frankly, be a repudiation of the entire principle of this "law of silence." It would be an acknowledgement that it was not valid or vital to either salvation or fellowship. Either this "law" is valid or it is not. You can't have it both ways. If it is valid, then Jesus is condemned by it.

No, this is not the truth. The Law of Silence as it is legalistically applied by the proponents of mechanical speakers (idols) is stated this way:

Jesus went to the Synagogue.
Jesus DID NOT SAY "thou shalt NOT play machines" in the synagogue.
Therefore, we are LEGALISTICALLY SOUND in adding instruments to the synagogue.

In other words, "silence" is God's Divine oversight in our mind like the hole in the donut is the baker's divine oversight.

But, there were no instruments in the synagogue!!

Al Maxey: Jack, the so-called "law of silence" (which, by-the-way, is never found in Scripture .... this "law" itself is manmade) is extremely inconsistent and subjective in its application by it proponents. And it is easily demonstrated to be so.

No, this is not the truth. The Law as not going beyond what is written does not have to be be legalistic for those who love the Lord. However, for those who don't love the Lord THERE IS AN ABSOLUTE LAW. Since Al doesn't know about the synagogue before using it to pass judgment on non-instrumentalistic he does not need to be aware of Scripture to publically proclaim that which is obvious.

The command to assemble (synagogue) for teaching and learning the Word does not limit the time and place.

However, the command to teach with the direct command to leave the melody (always abrading) in the heart makes TWO DIRECT COMMANDS. Paul spoke and Paul was not silent.

By the definition of a psalm and a modern "song" the "first instrument of choice is the human voice and heart." Therefore, if there is a direct command to make melody in the heart this is "the hole in the donut" or God's Divine silence about substituting the voice of an ass braying.

The problem with Israel according to Amos and Judah in Jerusalem was not a "bad mental attitude." Rather, the musical passages define the worship of the "starry host" to whom God abandoned Israel at Mount sinai.
The Bible amply illustrtes both the Law of Silence and the Command to follow the Commands of God. Topheth is named after the tabret or the tambourine. Topheth was once "the king's music grove" and became the worship center of Molech part of the starry host God turned Israel over to because of their musical idolatry at Mount sinai. They played instruments and beat on drums while they burned babies.

Burning incense was brought from the same paganism which caused the Israelites to rise up to play which means musical, perverted worship of the Egyptian triad. A study of the situation will show that nothing they did was commanded for THEM to do:

AND Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the Lord, which he commanded them not. Le.10:1

See the Nadab and Abihu story which Paul alludes to when he said that we need to come before God with godly fear and reverence because God is still a consuming fire.

And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire;
........ which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart. Jeremiah 7:31

They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto Baal,
........ which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind: Jeremiah 19:5

The common people never "worshiped" in the temple with instrumental music. That was to make a great crashing sound during the horrors of animal sacrifice and the "musicians" never went into the Holy Place as a type of the church. The common people worshiped by study and prayer.

However, the official Jews worshiped with music ONLY at their pagan temples. Topheth was named after the tabret which you can see in the above picture:

Commands, Examples and Inferences: Why do all of the Grace Centered agents feel that there is no grace unless they extend it by deliberately turning the Word of God upside down?

Al Maxey: Men have circumvented this "law" for generations by conveniently labeling as "expedients" or "aids" those "unauthorized innovations" that THEY THEMSELVES utilize and approve. When the organist or the Sister Singer choir stands over the flock they "go beyond what is written" and the explicit purpose is to take pride in the theatrical performer over either the "audience" or to the Words of Christ and Paul.

When non instrumentalists sing four-part Fanny with no possibility of teaching, they clearly violate the Direct Loud Law of Direct commands. However, their practices normally do not sow discord among brethren.

When Israel engaged in musical idolatry at Mount Sinai, it was obvious that they did not listen to the covenant of grace. Therefore, they probably reasoned: "God didn't say, don't sing, dance, play instruments, get drunk and naked."

God promised that in contending for the faith in the time of Jesus:

I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. Deut 18:18

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. Deut 18:19

But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name,

which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. Deut 18:20

That is not under the Law: that is right now. Christ has spoken and to trade on His silence (even when He has spoken) is to merchandise or "see godliness as a means of financial gain." That is, to see preaching or singing as a profession which is another sign of the end-time Babylon Whore blend of false religion and commerce.

Jesus honored the Law of Silence. The term "Son" is defined as the faithful WORDS of the "Father." Jesus identified a son of the Devil as a liar because "he speaks on his own."

You mean God Incarnate was BOUND BY SILENCE but we are not? How powerful we are? He did it as "an approved example."

The Test of a Son of God and the Law of Silence:

For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. Jn.12:49
And I know that his
commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak. Jn.12:50

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63

Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. Jn.15:15

It is pretty evident that God was silent about external melody or instruments. Therefore, Jesus was silent (but condemned instruments in many ways). Therefore, Paul was silent about mechanical instruments but not silent about organic "instruments."

For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Matt 12

Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. Matt 13

Therefore, if Christ is not speaking to you through His Words it is because you have declared yourself a mortal enemy to the quiet Spiritual truth: that is the MARK or supernatural sign seen in pompous self-speak.

Al Maxey: In my opinion, this "interpretive tool" has been the cause of more division in the Body of Christ than just about anything else. It has been used to exclude more than just those practices with which we personally disapprove;

it has also been used to exclude brethren with whom we personally disagree. Is it not time to seriously rethink this whole aspect of the CENI hermeneutic?

Because the instrumentalists among Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Congregationalists, Puritans and every other non-Catholic form of religion used "this interpretive tool" to ADD INSTRUMENTS and thereby created the DIVISION, it IS THE TRUTH that instrumentalists always did and do sow discord just so they can enjoy the "lust of the ear."

They are the first and only ones I have read about who claimed that music was NOT PART of the worship but was an AID to the worship.

Certainly, non-instrumentalists do not use that "law.

The instrumentalists always pleaded: "But God hath not said: 'thou shalt not use instruments.'" Therefore, we will use the LAW OF SILENCE to add instruments even when it violates other clear commandments about SOWING DISCORD.

Non-Instrumentalists use no silence: Paul commanded teaching by singing the Biblical material. The always "first instrument of choice" in rendering the english song or psalm is "the human voice."

Al Maxey: When a principle or "law" leads to more division than unity, it is time to take a closer look at that principle or "law."

We are commanded to COME OUT OF THEM. Beginning in the garden of Eden with the serpent (Nachash) as the Musical Enchanter or "The Assyrian" as "tallest tree," music was the LIFELESS WEAPON Satan taught the "children" so that they could rebel against the authority of their elders and God.

The truth is that instrumentalists are the only ones who use and confessed to using THE LAW OF SILENCE even when they knew that THEY sowed discord by adding or still attempting to add or endorse instrumental worship of a Spirit God.

Al, is still pretending that those who added instruments and stole church property were ok because there was no law against instruments. At the same time, he and friends try to sell the "watered wine" that "I shot you in the heart but you are to blame because I was shooting at your nose and you dodged." Is that honest?

No one even needed a law of silence when after the Civil war the huge wealth created by warfare caused northern churches to lust after some of the money and built huge buildings and hired an organist (up to $5000 a year) to attract the money. They just wanted to get some of that. It was not until 1878 that anyone can identify anyone who made any attempt to use the Bible speaking or silent to justify what they would do 'spit of hell.'

Those who had their church property stolen simply left and worshiped as their ancestors had for 2,000 years. The property is still "stolen goods in the hands of the instrumentalists" and they will have to explain to God why stealing was "Grace-Centered."

Now, along comes Al and decides that not to affirm the high crimes and disdemors is being legalistic.

Well, that is why Jesus fired the "doctors of the law" and died to create a one another, non-professional, non-commercial school of the Bible.

Consistent with all of the records of the ancients and the message of Jubal in the Bible, instrumental music and singing "romantic" songs instead of the Word of God was spiritual prostitution.

But, Al would say, "Jesus, how can you be so legalistic and evil to tell me that I can do that about which You have been silent?"

However, one does not remain silent when they just obey Paul and TEACH one another with the singing and melody in the heart.

One needs the Law of Silence to add instruments or Sister Singer choirs flauing sexual authority.

However, the synagogue or church is authorized as a school of the Bible and it has no remote connection to "singing" as an act of external worship.

If the singing and melody is commanded to be "in the heart" and someone decides to make it into a ritual singing externally the words of Fanny Crosby and make HARMONY externally with four different groups singing four different sets of words at four different times to four different tunes, this would not give one the authority to add instruments to the already perverted ignoring of both Christ and His Spirit words.

Again, teaching the Biblical text through singing with the melody specificially restricted to internal meditation needs no LAW OF SILENCE to NOT use an instrument when every literate Jew knew that music was part of the civil temple system of animal sacrifices "added because of transgression" and that "transgression" being musical idolatry at Mount Sinai.

Furthermore, if we all obeyed Jesus direct command and approved example about the PLACE and method of "WORSHIP" you would not get paid to try to decide whether I am "doing worship" correctly or not.

It is all a scam: come out of her as she tumbles to the beat of the musical instruments.
