This
dissertation is an exploration into the history,
theology, and day-to-day thoughts around missional
church from leaders and lay persons of four
different denominational systems. Interview data
was collected from 350 individuals in the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America,
Presbyterian Church USA's Synod of the Trinity,
Mennonite Church USA, and a fellowship of Churches of Christ connected
with Abilene Christian University.
This data was coded, analyzing common themes and
areas of disconnect. How these interviewees
understood themselves, their congregation, and
their relationship to God in light of the missional
church conversation guided the process of
discovery.

The New Apostolic Reformation
(NAR) is a movement which seeks to
establish a fifth branch
within Christen distinct
from Catholicism,
Protestantism, Oriental Orthodoxy,
and Eastern
Orthodoxy. The movement is largely
associated with the Pentecostal
and the Charismatic
movements and advocates the restoration of the
lost offices of church governance, namely
the offices of prophet and apostle.[1]
Inspired by the G12 movement,
it grows by recruiting
pastors of independent congregations and nondenominational
churches, by assimilating
members from other churches through cell group meetings,

and rapid expansion, including foreign

era of the progressive Church of Christ
is over.
Back in the 80s you could go to
any major city, especially in the South, and you could
find a progressive Church of Christ and if
they would preach grace, and if they would put
words on a screen, and if they would let divorced
people place membership, they would grow.
The generation of Boomers has
enough denominational loyalty that theyre going to
find the least legalistic
Well, we discipled the children
of those progressive churches
for a whole generation to grow
past us Boomers.
They never heard the sermons
we heard.
They never heard the rationale
for a cappella music.
We sent them to youth
rallies and Church of Christ events
with some of the finest Christian
bands in the world.
We
discipled our children to leave our Movement!

Originally part of the Restoration Movement
(begun by Thomas and Alexander Campbell, Barton W.
Stone and others), the Disciples of Christ adopted a
denominational structure and created Christian
Missionary Fellowship in the late 1800s, thus
"abandoning" the "non-denominational" principle of
the Movement.
In recent years (1970s
following), the Disciples
of Christ denomination has sought to broaden its
"liberality" and has endorsed the following
anti-Biblical positions:

2. ordained women
ministers
3. ordained women elders
4. denied the requirement of immersion for salvation [neo-Calvinism]
5. denied the virgin
birth of Jesus (The
"incarnational" theory does this. Rubel Shelly

Goddess of the Sun: Greeks never called Athena a Sun
Goddess outright, in fact they stubbornly maintained
Apollon was the Sun deity, even when this had
foolish results. Titling him 'Phoebas,' a
feminine monicker which made him a 'lunar Sun' .
Snakes [labyrinth]
are interwoven with a great deal of provocative
symbolism. Their coiling bodies
suggested the spiral, itself used to
represent the Sun and the eyes of the
Goddess. The coiled snake also suggests the coiled
thread Athena used while weaving, and the ball of
thread Ariadne used to escape the labyrinth. Athena
is related to Ariadne by being a psychompomp,
a role already mentioned in the main section in
speaking of a small statue of Athena found in an
Attic tomb with snakes for arms.
Sun Goddesses
were frequently psychopompes,
[conductoresses of dead SPIRITS] and the labyrinth
was itself connected to the Sun. It's entrance was
carefully faced East to catch the first sunlight of
the day. Patricia Monaghan's research has also shown
that the labyrinth accurately charts the Sun's path
in the sky in the far North.
Travelling the labyrinth made rebirth possible,
whether if be by the Goddess leading the dead
from its centre beneath the ground,
or the priestess Ariadne guiding initiates through
it for a spiritual rebirth.
Winding up the
thread originally recreated the globe of the Sun, rebirthing
the Sun Goddess herself. The ubiquitous pools
near labyrinths or Cretan Goddess temples were
probably meant to act as mirrors. The Sun's
reflection was used for divination, rather
than the endless circling of the fish.

A paradigm is a PATTERN defined in Scripture which is intended
to be imitated. The Adam and Eve story even in the text has
Moses speaking of the Babylonian theology to which God abandoned
the Nation because of musical idolatry of the always-pagan
trinity at Mount Sinai. In this story the elohim saw no
need for women since men were "male and female" with no need for
women. That god thought one of the animals should do the

and discipleship to the Creator.
B. Neo-pentecostalism broke out in many of the liberal churches.
In 1973 there was a shakeup at Highland church in
Abilene. E. R. Harper, the preacher there when Herald
of Truth started, and who along with Bro. Yater Tant conducted
the first public debate on the issue, was fired and one of the
elders, W. F. Cawyer, resigned. Others later resigned. There was
tongue speaking in the church! Because of this, many
hundreds of churches discontinued their support of Herald of
Truth.
Dec. 1988, the Nashville meeting. Hundreds of
institutional and non-institutional brethren met to
hear a program of representative speakers on the issues, and
to ask questions. From the more liberal speakers there emerged a
plea for a new hermeneutics (a new set of rules
for interpreting the Bible). For these ultra-liberals,
direct statement, apostolic example, and necessary inference,
for establishing authority, can no longer be accepted.
1. The expanded role for women was introduced and pushed. Now
there are women filling the pulpits and women elders are
beginning to be installed. All this is an avenue to pure,
classical modernism. More and more of the Bible is being
discarded as the verbally inspired word of God. A young Ph.D.,
Andre Resner, of Abilene Christian University, in an article
entitled, Christmas at Matthews House, wrote that Mary was a
sexually questionable woman, and called Matthew, sneaky! This is
pure modernism!
2. The Nashville Jubilee (Inc.), which is really from its
incipiency a corporation, had its beginning in 1989.
Associated with its name in the beginning was the Madison
church of Christ, and Rubel Shelley. Max Lucados
services were employed in the 1994 Jubilee to enhance interest.
10,000 were expected for attendance. Change agents were employed
to conduct seminars. The leaders of the Jubilee also have been
editors and writers for the publication, Wineskins,
which promotes a constant barrage on conservatism.

time in Churches of Christ. Three books had just been
published that stirred the conversation: Discovering
our Roots and Illusions of Innocence
by Leonard Allen and Richard Hughes, and The

(In 1990 Leonards The Cruciform Church would come
out; and in 1996 Richards Reviving the Ancient Faith:

The restoration perspective has worked in
American life in two important ways. Some Americans have
enshrined first times as an ideal to be approximated and
even as a kind of transcendent norm that stands in
judgment on the ambiguities of the present age. In this
case, the myth of first times has been a beacon
summoning Americans to perfection. On the other hand, some
Americans have fully identified their religious
denomination or even their nation itself with the purity
of first times. The illusion thereby fostered in
the minds of these Americans is that they are an innocent
and fundamentally natural people who, in effect,
have stepped outside of history, thereby escaping the
powerful influences of history, culture, and tradition.
These Americans therefore have often confused the historic
particularities of their limited experience with universal
norms that should be embraced, they have thought, by all
people in all cultures and all times.
In May, I did the opening night keynote at
Pepperdine, introducing the book of Exodus. I called it One
Thing Worse Than Bondage. (Want to guess?) Oliver Howard
taught a packed house in Smothers Theater on the topic, Maintaining
Unity in the Face of Divisive Controversies.
Another major class, taught by Randy Mayeux was entitled, A
Local Minister Responds to the Warnings of The
Worldly Church.
Then in July, I gave the opening keynote of the first
Nashville Jubilee again on fellowship (and again a topic
that I was asked to speak on). That time, some Nashville
church or perhaps it was a few churches took out an ad in
the Nashville paper
(I kid you not!) to attack my speech. For reasons I still
dont understand though I think just because it was such a
large gathering of a group that doesnt normally have
conventions there were summaries of that message
everywhere from Christianity Today to the New York Times.
Again, I kid you not.
I mentioned these three books. However, the discussion
had begun a few years before. The real shot across the bow
came from a Nashville preacher. It was entitled I

exploration into the doctrine of the Trinity and its
understanding in four denominational systems

This dissertation is an exploration
into the history, theology, and day-to-day thoughts around missional
church from leaders and lay persons of four different
denominational systems. Interview data was collected from
350 individuals in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America, Presbyterian Church USA's Synod of the Trinity,
Mennonite Church USA, and a fellowship of Churches of
Christ connected with Abilene Christian University.
This data was coded, analyzing common themes and areas of
disconnect. How these interviewees understood themselves,
their congregation, and their relationship to God in light
of the missional church conversation guided the process of
discovery.
In addition, a new way of understanding
the Triune God as a social reality and in
relationship with humanity is introduced through the
hermeneutic of feminist theology.
Specifically, how can the experience of women
help one better understand the kingdom of God present today
and coming at us from the future? What does it mean to become
part of God's new creation by participating in the life of
God? Implications for understanding God in light of this
hermeneutic are presented for furthering the missional church
conversation.

History of Religious Sex: The
religion of the Goddess, wherever it was practiced
throughout history, has always been sex positive. The
most famous of the ancient rituals is the Hieros Gamos,
or Sacred marriage ritual. Records of this ceremony have
been dated as far back as early Sumerian, about 5500
years ago. In this ritual the high priestess acting as
avatar of The Goddess had sex with the ruler of the
country to show the Goddess's acceptance him as ruler
and caretaker of her people. Here is part of the
ceremony as translated from an ancient Sumerian poem.
The High Priestess, acting for Inanna,
is speaking to Dumuzi the new king: the Pagan
"Christ."
Ezekiel
8 defines this worship of Inanna and
Tammuz: as well, it defines the assemblies
in Romans 14 which Paul silences.
One of the most famous prophets
and seers of ancient time,
Teiresias, was a man who was
changed into a woman
and served in the temples as a
priestess for seven years
to gain the feminine powers of
insight and divination.
During this time as a woman he gave birth to a
daughter before being turned back into a man. It was
Teiresias who gave us the "scale of one to ten."
Myth has it that Zeus and Hera
once argued who had the most pleasure in sex. Zeus
said it was the woman, while Hera asserted it was the
man. They agreed that Teiresias should judge who was
right.
He did not hesitate to tell the
God and Goddess, "Measured on the scale of pleasure,
in the act of sex man has one measure to woman's
nine." Hera became incensed by this, stating that
judges, like referees in sporting events are all
blind, and made Teiresias blind.
The god Hermes [Hermeneutic, Mercury, Kairos]
in order to become a god of magic went into
the temple of his consort Aphrodite where he
wore a woman's robes and artificial breasts.
In the temple he learned all the secrets of the
Goddess Aphrodite which were exclusively taught to
her female priestesses.
The Vineyard (aka Fuller) and Wineskins sees music as
